SUCCESS FOR THE QUARRY HUNSLET CRUSADERS!

Ever since the first Bachmann Narrow Gauge OO9 scale Quarry Hunslets arrived at the end of 2022, a loyal army of enthusiasts have been asking when more of these delightful locomotives will appear. Today Bachmann Narrow Gauge answered those questions by revealing the latest addition to the OO9 scale range – Holy War! Announced alongside the launch partner for this model, the Bala Lake Railway, the model will be available to purchase at their ‘Welcome Back Alice and Holy War’ event next weekend (Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th April 2023).

One of eleven Alice Class Quarry Hunslet locomotives built for the Dinorwic Quarry in North Wales, ‘Holy War’ was delivered in 1902 and identified simply as No. 3 – the name ‘Holy War’ was not given until 1908. The locomotive spent much of its working life on the higher levels of Dinorwic Quarry – for a time being housed in the highest engine shed in
Britain at 1,860ft above sea level on the quarry’s Lernion Level. Withdrawn in November 1967, ‘Holy War’ was the last working steam locomotive in a Welsh slate quarry and so ended 120 years of quarry steam.

Purchased from the quarry in 1968, ‘Holy War’ moved to Quainton Road in 1970 before being sold again in 1975 – the new owner selecting the Bala Lake Railway in North Wales as the loco’s new home. A full restoration followed, during which an enclosed cab was fabricated and fitted in place of the original open-cab design. The Bala Lake Railway secured ‘Holy War’s’ long term future when it purchased the locomotive in 1989, decorating her in the mid-1990s in the vibrant lined blue livery as seen today. In 2018 it was time for the locomotive to be overhauled and 2023 sees the return to steam of ‘Holy War’ alongside sister locomotive
‘Alice’ – a locomotive that has already been modelled by Bachmann Narrow Gauge.

The Bachmann Narrow Gauge model of ‘Holy War’ depicts the locomotive in its preserved state, with enclosed cab and in the stunning lined blue livery. Featuring a diecast boiler and running plate, accompanied by a wealth of separately fitted details including handrails, valves, springs, brake shoes and cab controls, every aspect of the prototype is captured in miniature. The 0-4-0ST wheel formation is faithfully modelled, with authentically-profiled wheels running in metal bearings ensuring smooth running, powered by a coreless motor with flywheel, and with a 6 Pin DCC decoder socket for those wishing to use the models with a DCC system.
NEM coupling pockets feature at both ends, into which standard OO9 scale couplings are fitted.

‘Holy War’ is in stock now and will be available to purchase from our launch partner the Bala Lake Railway during their ‘Welcome Back Alice and Holy War’ event on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th April 2023. For those not attending the event, the model can be ordered online now from https://shop.bala-lake-railway.co.uk/  As an additional incentive, the Bala Lake Railway will include a voucher for a free return ticket (valid from 2nd May to 4th November 2023) with all models ordered before midnight on Monday 1st May (including models purchased in person during the event). Please note that online orders will not be dispatched until after the event. The model is priced at £149.95 and proceeds from each sale will help the Bala Lake Railway.

Lovely colour and sits well on Holy War.

Wasnt sure if this will only be available from the railway or will be at other stockists.

Either way ive placed my order there to support the railway.

And a free trip if you order soon.

Whats not to like :-)

An attractive colour scheme on this loco, and one I've actually travelled behind, duly ordered!

Hopefully this will be a nice little earner for the BLR, and will be a positive after their recent planning application disappointment.
Now to see if I can fit in a trip to the BLR during my visit to Wales later this year.

I wonder if Bachmann will be doing additional Quality Control checks on these after the reported running problems with some of the original batch. (I'm guessing it probably came out of the factory in the same run, so unlikely there will have been any changes to the chassis design).

FYI @AY Mod the shop link in the original post didn't work for me, I think it has an extra '.' at the end.

Well, my forecast that the actual announcement would start 2 ½ minutes after 10am and be preceded by a countdown sequence turned out exactly correct — to the second.

Given that pretty much every announcement has started like that, it was a bit like predicting that it will get dark tonight...

I would have rather you predict the lottery numbers...😃

  • 2 weeks later...

Just had the dispatch notification for mine from the BLR shop. At the time of writing, only 16 shown left in stock (though don't know if that includes any unsold from the weekend or if they're keeping any back for in-store sales).

Did anyone pick up one of these at the weekend? If so, how's the running at slow speeds.
Any obvious changes to the previous models?

Sadly my original 3 have all gone back to Rails for repair/replacement as I could never get them to run satisfactorily at slow speed, and DCC fitting made them even worse!

Has anyone else received a dispatch notice from the BLR shop? I haven't heard head or hair about my order since I put it in.

Mine was dispatched on Tuesday and arrived here this morning. Having to wait until after work to get it out and test it!

Having now given mine an initial test run, I can now answer my own question.

It's a lovely looking loco but, sadly, out of the box it still has a noticeable 'tight spot' whilst running slowly.
However, it doesn't seem as bad as my other three, so I'm keeping fingers crossed that it might improve with lubrication and running in, rather than this one having to go back as well.

I am a bit disappointed overall with these. For what is a fairly simple 0-4-0 chassis without complex valve gear, you'd expect a manufacturer like Bachmann to have them running like a Swiss watch every single time!

Like you I had to return 2 'Dorothea's for 'tight spot' issues. I've lost confidence in the chassis and have given up on the Quarry Hunslet which is such a pity as the loco looks fabulous.

Lovely model, small but extremely well done. I love Bachmann's narrow gauge line, it's a little surprising it took so long for British outline RTR narrow gauge really.

On holiday this week between Bala and Dolgellau. For some reason the car veered towards the railway on the way back from Conwy and a Holy War was procured! The good Lady Wife said it could be my father's day present.

Did see Maid Marion in the platform and Holy War by the water tower.

Here's a picture of a Bachmann Holy War at Port Dinorwic. This is the layout built by Kathy Millatt, featured on the Hornby TV series and now owned by the Bala Lake Railway Society. It's due to make its exhibition debut at the Bala Model Show on September 16th - 17th. Of course, this is a model of HW in preserved condition and we could really do with a Dinorwic Port Class... but she still looks pretty fine.

All best,

Mat P. (Bala Lake Railway Society Secretary and Bala Model Show Organiser)
