GWR Structure Colours. Light Stone, Dark Stone & ?

What colour would the steel deck of the traversers at Birmingham Moor St been in GWR days?

 

They consist of rivetted chequer plates:

I would go with dark grey or black,it might even be tarred. I don't think it would be light or dark stone, as the locos will drip oil on it and probably some ash as well, it will also get scuffed by crews etc. walking on it.

 

Just my thoughts, I have no info to back it up.

Hi,

They would have been red-oxide undercoat and black top coat when new, but would rapidly have weathered to rusty brown with oily residue and puddles of oily water!
