  1. I would like to see a 4 wheel luggage van without a guards compartment. I have a few suggestions as to variations such as providing window openings in the doors that can be glazed, fitted with a blank panel or even louvres for a milk/perishables van. Two pairs of doors each side with either both doors glazed, one door glazed and both doors panelled or louvred.
  2. I picked up the TV program to check the times of the GMRC and the preceding program looks interesting, 'Secrets of Underground Britain'.
  3. Afternoon all from Estuary-Land. Ian, very sad news about Alison and I hope she recovers as much as she can in the circumstances soon. John, I've had your blog delivered to my e-mail ever since RMweb was down for the upgrade. Usually I delete it once I've read it but this time I did not delete it. I keep thinking of Kerry who must be missing her mistress terribly.
  4. Forgot to mention earlier. I watched bits of Eliud Kipchoge's marathon record attempt this morning where he broke the two hour barrier. This meant that he had to keep an average of 13+ mph for two hours. even when I was young and fit that sort of speed would be a sprint. I caught a glimpse of a coach pacing the group of runners on a bicycle and he was pedalling away like mad just to keep up with the runners.
  5. I have to disagree with Nick on one point. Rolling stock was built to the same exact standards as the locomotives. A compartment carriage can have between 8 and 16 doors. No doubt when new they would be identical, not only on the individual coach but often on the entire coaching stock. The reason for this is simple, carriage doors are the one component likely to be damaged more often. It is essential therefore that if damaged they can be replaced quite easily and to this end they must me constructed accurately. The same applies to the openings in which they fit. The usual practice in carriage works was to use templates so that things such as tumblehome and roofs were the same.
  6. Indeed, 600mm is a lot of rain in a few hours, thats 2 feet in old money!
  7. Morning all from Estuary-Land. A bit grey and overcast this morning but still dry atm. ChrisF, I have no difficulty getting into BBC I-player, in fact I intend to watch the HIGNFY that you mentioned. It might help that I will be viewing it on a laptop rather than some other device such as a tablet, just google BBC I-player. Not much else I can add to that except best wishes to Debs also.
  8. Evening all from Estuary-Land. Spent a fair bit of time this afternoon catching up on a bit of housework. One of the problems with living in a hard water area is limescale. I have just cleaned the kettle of limescale and not before time. Its now quicker to boil but as it has to be boiled a few times for the limescale remover to do its stuff the power saving is negligable. Now for a mug of tea, be back later.
  9. The Oxford and Aylesbury was separated from the highway by a fence or hedge. Another that wasn't separated was the Mumbles Railway.

    Oxford N7

They usually sell off their 'returns' at knock down prices from their display stand at events that they attend. Usually the smaller cars and vans at £1 each. I've obtained a couple of perfect models this way with just damaged packaging. Perhaps if they extend this to Oxford Rail it may be possible to obtain spares this way. I do understand they will have a stand at Warley.
  11. And they could be seen hauled by diesel locomotives. As for Edwardians comments above, you have to look no further than Hornby's 3 compartment abomination.
  12. If that happened would it be run at a later date?
  13. More akin to the Wisbeach and Upwell or the Wantage Tramway here in the UK.
  14. Morning all from Estuary-Land. Sad news about the hump back whale the entered the Thames. The post mortem revealed that she was probably already dying when she entered the river. Not only was she suffering from intestinal parasites she had been struck by a ship and injured. John, I hope Sandy's treatment was successful and best wishes to you both. Windy with squally showers at the moment so nothing much will be done today, be back later.
  15. One big advantage of a generic model is that the manufacturer can add features without worrying about nit-picking and rivet counting. My suggestion for the 4 wheel chassis with a GUV body in the same style as the rest of the range.
  16. My housemates reckon this place is haunted but I've lived here for 274 years and I've noticed nothing unusual.
  17. Evening all from Estuary-Land. Had a pleasant evening at SEERS tonight. It is the usual practice for members to donate old magazines, just left on a table by the door for members to help themselves. Tonights bounty was a few NG journals and some copies of Modern Railways from more than 40 years ago.
  18. If you made it 120 mm long the thickness of the etches used on the end would account for the extra scale inch. (you need them to be 7 thou thick.)
  19. Afternoon all from Estuary-Land. Blowing a hooley outside but at least its dry at the moment. I would have told them not to worry as I got a copy from Tesco's*. In fact I buy most of my magazines from Tesco's and sometimes the same thing happens but instead of refusing to sell the magazine they take another magazine with the same or lower price off the shelf and scan that. If someone wanted to work out my hobbies from my purchases in Tesco's they would think I'm into knitting and snowboarding as well as model railways.*Or whoever is their main rival locally.
  20. A few years after the flood had subsided God paid a visit to Noah and asked him to build a new ark. Noah said he would do so. God then told him he wanted it to have 20 decks to which Noah agreed. God then asked him to fill it with Koi. Noah by this time was getting a bit worried about Gods sanity so he asked him why he wanted it so. God answered "I just fancied a multi-storied Carp Ark." Hat and coat on and gone..............
  21. Morning all from Estuary-Land. The bin wagons dawn chorus is in full voice as I type, it started off first thing with the lesser spotted glass and bottle wagon, no one slept in this morning. Track night tonight at SEERS, I'll have to get there earlier to book the outside 00 track as I want to test run my Oxford rail gun and it might not like the tighter radii of the inner tracks. (There are five ovals of 00, two of 0 gauge and one of 1 gauge for members to test run their stock). Now back to the thread on the proposed Hattons four and six wheel coaches, gets a bit frothy at times but not as badly as some.
