Another thing to consider with regard to rolling stock was that during the holiday seasons in the 50's a lot of older coaches that had stood idle for the rest of the year were pressed into service. Some of them would even be pre-grouping.
  2. As a matter of fact it is. Not so much the tanks but inflatable lorries had the windows painted on.
  3. Afternoon all from Estuary-Land. Not done much today, thats about it.

The service that I was on started at Liverpool Street and was corridor stock.
  5. Also forgot to mention that the rails were metal.

I should have pointed out that the stock on the Walton/Clacton service was gangwayed stock.
  7. Forgot to mention my friend paid very little for the 'wooden' track.
  8. I think the LNER pipped them to the post when it came to geriatric rolling stock.

I recall as a child going to Clacton/Walton by train c. 1959. From were the train was split the portion I was travelling in was hauled by an N7. The stock was mostly if not all Gresley in both blood and custard and maroon.
  10. Morning all from Estuary-Land. Yesterday at the Chelmsford show my friend made an unusual purchase. A box of track including two points, what was so unusual was it has a wooden base. Its 16.5mm gauge and marked Tenshodu. The box it came in which looks as if its the original has an illustration of US locomotives and stock and appears to date from the 1950's. Had a long lie in and soak in this morning and I've got things to do so I'll be back later.
  11. Further to that, would anyone want the chassis as a separate item for scratchbuilding?
  12. Evening all from Estuary-Land. Disposed of a quantity of modelling tokens at the Chelmsford show today, most of it went on a locomotive from John Dutfields plus a few bits and pieces from other traders. One thing I hate washing is bedsheets, how do you fold the things solo without an extra pair of arms?
  13. Morning all from Estuary-Land. Being on 'The dry side' and according to the forecast its going to stay that way for the weekend. Only problem is with a northerly wind this time of year its bl@@dy cold! Ironing? whats that? I was going to say something about memory loss but I've forgotten what it was. Off to the Chelmsford show shortly, be back later.
  14. The pre-group companies also had bogie coaches. I wonder if Hattons if these are successful would consider producing longer bogie coaches to match?
  15. The idea was to stop water from entering the gun barrel. I have seen pictures of tanks about the time of D-Day with what appears to be a canvas bag tied over the end of the barrel.
  16. Evening all from Estuary-Land. Will be going to the Chelmsford show tomorrow. I was a bit worried when it was announced that roads were going to be closed in Chelmsford for a marathon but as it turns out thats on the Sunday. Mention of toasties reminded me that cooked cheese seems to encourage Arthur Itis, by cutting it out I seem to suffer less as well as the benefits to the waistline.
  17. Afternoon all from Estuary-Land. Talking of noisy birds on the roof, I have what is known as 'Flintlock' guttering on my house. These consist of a line of concrete slabs with a gully moulded in. They were originally steel lined but this had rusted away. Some had tried painting them with bitumen but the only solution was a zinc lining which I had fitted several years ago. The birds often make a racket scratching around for insects but I don't mind as in doing so the keep the gutters clear of moss and dead leaves. Surprisingly the noisiest are the tits and sparrows, the noise they make makes you think theres a turkey up there.
  18. Thats the problem with real water. Its 12" to the foot scale and stays that way.
  19. There is also a system (Dutch IIRC) that uses what looks like a plastic bicycle chain that pulls the object being moved by magnets. This has been used with real water to move model boats.
