  1. I don't know if they are still in business but there was an undertaker's with the name De'ath. IIRC there was also a Dr. De'ath.
  2. Most remarkable thing is he's sold 5 already.
  3. Morning all from Estuary-Land. A bit warmer this morning but a thickish fog earlier that has now cleared leaving everything decidedly damp. They've made a few changes to Basildon over the last few years. The Eastgate is still there, many of the shops have changed but not to many are empty. The smaller Westgate and the other end of the town centre also seems to be doing well. However the half a mile between the developements is a wasteland of empty shops made worse by a council decision to move the market to between the Westgate developement and the Towngate Theatre. The old market provided a link between the Eastgate and Westgate that is now broken.
  4. Evening all from Estuary-Land. Apparently the local Debenhams is going to remain open for a while at least. Though they have closed one floor and a fair portion of the floor space is given over to such as Starbucks. The stollen cake has now gone, in two days! just hope no one wants to test my BG in the next couple of days. Now to catch up on a few other threads.
  5. Afternoon all from Estuary-Land. Plenty of sunshine today, certainly more than the Costa Del Sol where it is snowing! Time to prepare dinner, be back later.
  6. Thats what they used to use, only the metal was mercury in a glass U shaped tube that was meant to break when struck and breaking the current supply.
  7. And I thought the pilchard wagon was for transporting pilchards.
  8. I spent most of my working life doing payroll. We had an employee by the name of Richard Head.
  9. If they did bring them back they'd be in an entirely different form. Probably laser detectors as sometimes used on low bridges to detect overheight vehicles. A system is already in use on London Transport to detect and prevent surface stock entering tube tunnels.
  10. Is there a link to the new Oxford Rail releases?
  11. Morning all from Estuary-Land. A heavy frost earlier this morning but no sign of fog. The sun is up and shining brightly and warming things up. I'm not sure if we still have a Debenhams, I've heard nothing suggesting imminent closure. We have lost BHS and M&S and other parts of the town are a building site. I don't go into town very often now as now the legs aren't really up to it and it costs an arm and a leg to park, if you can find a parking place. Has no one realised yet that those shopping centres that are not dying are those where parking is cheaper? I checked on one show that I like to go to, Southern Expo, a none-railway modelling show (plastic kit bashers, military and aircraft mostly). Only to find that this years show will be the last at the current venue and if they can't find another venue the last one of all. Their current venue is due to be demolished/remodelled and afterwards will not be big enough. http://www.ipmsuk.org/calendar/southern-expo-2020/ -1C in Southend?
  12. Evening all from Estuary-Land. Just before Christmas I purchased a Stollen cake. I put it in the top of the cupboard out of site in case I was tempted. That worked a little bit too well as I only rediscovered it this evening. A few slices went down well with the mugs of tea this evening and theres still some for the next couple of days.
  13. Afternoon all from Estuary-Land. Ventured out for newspapers today but car was like an icebox. Muggatee time, be back later.
  14. Your wife is interested in a PENlS extention?
  15. Didn't the Ambassador have the 2 litre O series engine and 5 speed box as an option?
  16. I allways try to keep to the right on slip roads but I don't dither, this makes it easier for drivers on the road I'm entering to see me and for me to see them, I try to match my speed to the traffic I'm pulling into. I also keep out of the nearside lane if possible when passing a slip road. Thats one thing that does realy annoy me. Having overtaken me cutting in in front of me forcing me to slow down when there is plenty of room for them to pass clear of me. When I'm overtaking on a motorway or dual carriageway I indicate* that I'm going to pull back in again but I do not pull in until I can see both sides of the car I've just overtaken in my mirror. (*This is for the benefit of the clown sitting on my back bumper at 70mph. Even then some of them attempt to undertake me.)
  17. Morning all from Estuary-Land. I will have to clear out my in-box more often, sometimes in a hurry things get forgotten, some of them from 2016! If there was any frost this morning it had disappeared quite quickly as there was no sign of it two hours ago. Yes these spill chuckers can be a pain.
  18. Evening all from Estuary-Land. When I took early retirement I had saved up six weeks leave. HR faffed and farted about so much that they only confirmed my retirement six weeks and a day before my leave date. I then informed them that the following day would be my last working day. They immediatley went into PANIC! mode. In the end I agreed to work for two more weeks being paid for both my holiday and work, double pay.
  19. Wasn't there an incident in Australia where an out of gauge train hit a bridge?
