  1. Evening all from Estuary-Land. In the news this evening, the government is considering making all over 70's self isolate not for 14 days but for several months. What cockwomble thought that one up? I live on my own, the relative who lives closest to me is my brother who given his health problems is already at high risk, he is also older. Most of my friends are of similar age to me or older. It would be difficult to self isolate for a week let alone for months. Upside down so that the paper goes upwards?
  2. Afternoon all from Estuary-Land. Went down to Tescoes lunchtime, not as crowded as a normal Saturday but a lot of empty shelves, no toilet rolls, no paracetamol and very little tinned goods. Another thing in short supply is pot noodles, the shelves were nearly empty as well. I don't eat pot noodles or tinned food so I'm not that bothered, I have enough food in for about a week and plenty of loo rolls. Time to put the kettle on, be back later.

  4. Morning all from Estuary-Land. ChrisF, you can't be the most untidiest man on the planet because that is me. Dave, our organisation SEERS has also put its AGM back to September from next week but not being a registered charity is only against its constitution. As for preserved lines Mangapps has already announced that it will remain shut until the crisis is over. Although that is not a preserved railway in the normal sense. Thats it for now, be back later.
  5. This thread is for actual places. Perhaps fictional places should have their own thread?
  6. There was a young man called Cyrus who contracted coronavirus a sneeze and a cough and his balls fell off for replacements he's somewhat desirous.
  7. Evening all from Estuary-Land. Managed to dispose of the mortal remains of the jar of pickled onions. Packed the whole lot into a plastic box that once held washing tabs. The smell of pickled onions has now dispersed fortunately. Thats it for now, be back later.
  8. I would like to meet the Loose Womens Institute.
  9. POETS = P!ss of early Tomorrows Saturday.
  10. Slightly off topic, isn't that how the kangaroo got its name?
  11. Afternoon all from Estuary-Land. A jar of pickled onions commited suicide this afternoon. It leapt from the shelf and shattered itself on the kitchen floor. Honest guv I didn't touch it, I was nowhere near it. Problem is I had to clear up the mess and now the kitchen and myself reek of pickled onions. Mind you vinegar makes a good floor cleaner. Latest news is that the London Marathon has been cancelled due to the coronavirus. Theres no events that I was planning to attend this weekend so cancellations won't affect me at the moment but keeping an eye on developements..
  12. The council tax bill dropped through the door just now. Increase overall of 3.5% so not as bad as I feared.
  13. My driveway is slightly steeper than the one in the pic. I allways leave my car in gear on the driveway. Another thing I do is reverse on, which we all should do as it is far safer.
  14. No, there will be a marked increase in traffic here and on other modelling forums as the 'keyboard modellers' get down to business.
  15. There are two groups of villages in Essex sharing part of their names, the Matchings and the Rodings. The Matchings part of the name precedes but the Roding name follows. We have plain Matching but also Matching Green and Matching Tye, names that always amused my niece and nephew when they were little. There is a Leaden Roding and a Beauchamp Roding and one or two others. Other exotic names in Essex are Layer Marney and Layer Breton.
  16. Morning all from Estuary-Land. Happy birthday to Neil and I hope you have a good outcome Joe. As I have mentioned my brother has and has had serious health issues. He will now spend the rest of his life having dyalisis and taking anti rejection drugs. Dyalisis normally takes place at Queens Hospital, Romford. I found out late last night that someone there has died of the coronavirus, very worrying. I will be giving him a call this evening. The SEERS meeting last night will be the last for some time as it has been decided to suspend meetings until further notice. IMHO a prudent move as three quarters of the membership at least are in the most vunerable group, male over 65 including yours truly. I was considering not going as I had a sniffle and a sore throat earlier in the day but that cleared up with the first shower of rain, hay fever! Now to get on with the day, be back later.
  17. Evening all from Estuary-Land. The meeting tonight was quite well attended in the circumstances. Peter Kaye gave a very informed talk on the LT&SR architecture illustrated with some interesting photographs some dating back to the 1850's. Now time to catch up on a few things, be back later.
  18. Hello again from Estuary-Land. I'm just getting used to this computer thingy (after 20 years) and I've just managed to download an image from Google Street View. I've now posted it on the 'Ghosts in the machine' thread.
  19. Thanks, I've found the save button. Here is the image. The tunnel left of centre used to give access to the Romford Brewery from the Romford goods yard. The red brick construction to the left of that is a cut out in the retaining wall for the wagon lift that at first was the only rail access to the brewery via a wagon turntable in front of the tunnel mouth. The wagon lift and turntable are shown on a large scale 1853 map, before the goods yard was opened.
