  1. Was not Ian Fleming involved with the 1930's sound detection system that preceded radar? Correct, as worn by the witch Nannie (with nothing else) as she pursued Tam O'shanter across the Bridge of Doon. From the Robert Burns poem Tam O'shanter. Nannie is represented by the figurehead of the Cutty Sark.
  2. With oil burning one man operation is possible, then a cab forward design could be used with a tender at the smoke box end. A 9F with the fuel oil carried in a belly tank beneath the boiler and a large bogie mounted tender with or without a cab at the outer end.
  3. That dragline appeared in the Abandoned Engineering series on the Yesterday Channel only a few weeks ago.
  4. The odd one out (motorcycles) is Norton, all the others have been or are manufactured in Italy. Norton still produces motorbikes in the UK.
  5. They have all been made in Italy, except Triumph.
  6. Very close on number 1, spot on with number 2.
  7. I forgot my questions. 1) We all know of the Cutty Sark, the clipper ship preserved at Greenwich. The question is what is a cutty sark? 2) What is the most common metal found in the Earths crust?
  8. Morning all from Estuary-Land. I have a couple of pub quiz questions but I think I may have posted them here before. I got the first two. The motorbikes, is it something to do with where they are made? The chromosomes the answer I think is XXXX. CHOP, FOLFOX and FOLFIRI are drugs used in chemotherapy. Mortadella is the odd one out, its a cheese the others are pasta.
  9. Evening all from Estuary-Land. A bit damp here this evening and a bit cooler. The last slice of bread pudding is waiting for some mugs of tea to wash it down. The bread pudding has done well to last three days. I won't last much longer as the kettle is on, be back later.
  10. On some push-pull systems the fireman could make minor adjustments to the controls.
  11. Afternoon all from Estuary-Land. Mention of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle interested me as I'm a great Sherlock Holmes fan. There is of course some glaring errors in some of the stories the best known one is in 'The Hound of the Baskervilles', If the dog had been coated in the particular chemical to make it glow in the dark the poor pooch would have died in agony. Also Dr. Watson got through three wives in very few years, very suspicious. A doctor getting through three wives over a short period ought to be investigated by Sherlock Holmes.
  12. The screen is split, I could see it when I enlarged the photograph.
  13. Its an Oxford, its too wide to be a Minor. (Compare the width with the Hillman). The mini was registered in May 1962.
  14. They were both doctors but I doubt that is the answer as its too easy. Gold and platinum are used in cancer treatments so the answer is silver, compounds of which are used in wound dressings for its anti-bacterial properties.
  15. The carter looks very smart with his tie. I admin a local history group on Facebook and I can't help noticing how smart even the likes of apprentices looked compared to today, polished boots in particular.
  16. Morning all from Estuary-Land. Happy birthday Tony, I'll give you a wave when you go to the hospital if it wasn't for a few houses in the way so here's one. At least here and in Southend the Covid cases are amongst the lowest in the country. Tea is waiting to be drunk, be back later.
  17. Evening all from Estuary-Land. Done sod all today, I was going to zap the weeds that make up some of the so called lawn but after a couple of squirts the weed killer expired so I did a bit of eyelid inspection instead. Glad to hear that Dave's back with his nearest and dearest. My brother suffered a minor stroke a couple of months ago but he wasn't even aware that he'd had a stroke. But he went down from 16 stone to 12 stone in a couple of months so the hospital ran a scan and that picked it up. It must have been pretty serious though as the DLVA has revoked his driving licence. Started on the second bread pudding this evening, who knows it might just make it through tomorrow.
  18. Afternoon all from Estuary-Land. Sounds as if the Dave rescue mission can stand down a level or two. But not completely until it is confirmed that Dave is firmly ensconced at home. Hope to hear soon.
  19. Back in the day people paid more attention to announcements. Until reliable automatic doors came along in the 1920's there was no alternative to manually operated gates, and at that time labour was plentiful and cheap.
  20. It would be the flour that was flammable, many mills have been destroyed when flour ignites.
