  1. Probably because of consideration for her child, far more than she showed. What surprised me was only a three year ban, a life ban would be more suitable IMHO.
  2. The less frequent oil changes were possible because the large engines were not overstressed.
  3. Motorising a 00 scale model would not be a problem. The bogie wheelbase is 7 feet, 28 mm in 00 scale which is a 'standard' size for many motor bogies. Also in a smaller scale I can see difficulties in installing a motor in the body and concealing it without compromising the interior details.
  4. I read that as 'Mrs saw one cycling'.
  5. Morning all from Estuary-Land. A bit cooler than yesterday and a bit breezy but still comfortable. I did make a couple of purchases at Canvey yesterday, first was a small model trailer very close to 00 scale with a strange body, shaped like a miniature shipping container complete with ribbed sides and ends. It has a door at the back with three small windows each side and one at the front, the side windows are stepped and the front window is offset. It was such a strange looking vehicle that I had to buy it, for £1. Talking to someone later I was informed that it is the modern equivalent of the portable bothy used by roadworkers and that such things are common on the continent. The other purchase was an old map 25" to the mile of part of Dagenham near the Ford works, only that the map dates from about the same time as the works was built and it only shows the sidings that must have been built to bring materials to the site. The main reason for my purchasing the map is that it shows the bottom end of the abortive Romford canal, most of which no longer exists.
  6. If it was the L. B. of Havering would demolish it.
  7. But how did they handle on a slippery road when fully laden?
  8. If they got rid of that big green patch on the backscene it would look more realistic.
  9. Why stick with a fourth loco? Imagine if BTH put them into production for the open market. They would have to increase the power rating though as IIRC the Allen engine was only rated at about 150 hp. This could be achieved by offering a variety of engine/traction motor options.
  10. Yes there is, at Gallows corner, a temporary structure when it was erected over 40 years ago. There's been several photos on the Essex history groups on Facebook that I manage. The road junction I'm talking about is where the A13 meets the A130 about 15 miles from there.
  11. Evening all from Estuary-Land. Had a pleasant day at Canvey today, nipped back to collect my parcel late morning and then found that the cockwombles were out in force. The traffic was backed up from Sadlers Farm almost to the Pitsea flyover. I came over the flyover and had to enter this stream of slow traffic which I did so by moving fairly slowly forwards indicating my intention to merge, no fuss and no frayed tempers. As I approached where the lanes diverge an elderly BMW with a driver not much older than the car who then proceeded to force his way in across the solid hatched lines. This was about four cars in front of me he then weaved between the lanes up to the traffic lights were he found himself on the Canvey side but trying to force his way onto the other stream of traffic for Southend. Fortunately by the time to come home the traffic had cleared and it was a clear run.
  12. Later photographs show two headlights virtually identical to to the original single headlight.
  13. Morning all from Estuary-Land. Up at sparrow-fart this morning as I have to deliver one of our elderly members (89 years old) and his train simulator to the exhibition at the Canvey transport museum. Then I will have to go and collect a very important parcel, my supply of tea for the next couple of months. Apart from the parcel collection I should be at the exhibition for most of the day. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. LE on your anniversary and any other C & C's were required, be back later.
  14. I did have a lot of info on these locomotives but unfortunately it was lost. This included a photograph of #3 at the manufacturers awaiting delivery. There were a few notable differences. The cast numberplates were mounted where the Ford logo was later placed, they had standard round buffers of normal size and a single headlamp on the roof above the cab door. It would be interesting to know how they were transported to Dagenham when new, as part of a goods train or under their own power.
  15. I've read the BRM article on this (model) locomotive and spotted an error. What are described as fuel tanks, the three cylinders between the bogies are in fact air cylinders. The fuel tank is behind the #1 cab opposite the radiator, the purpose of the fold away ladder is to gain access to the fuel filler on the roof. The reason for the air cylinders other than braking was that their principle duty was moving coke hoppers from the coking plant to the iron smelters, the hoppers had air operated bottom doors. The hook coupling, and an exhauster to operate vacume brakes were only fitted after it went to the K&ESR, it was only fitted with a buckeye coupling and air brakes in service at Fords.
  16. Same with Tesco's 'Everyday' range as in 'Use Tesco's Everyday toilet paper and get in touch with yourselves.' I can think of only two political parties that have a four letter names. One is an acronym and the other though not the actual name of the party is common usage. The first behaves like a bunch of clowns, the second has the best clowns though. So as not to show political bias another party with a six letter name is like a circus but with no clowns where the lions like to savage the ringmaster.
  17. Morning all from Estuary-Land. I woke at 6 this morning to a thick fog, fortunately its now lifted to hazy sunshine. Very sad news, nothing I can add to what has been said already RIP Ed. Out shortly to spend some more modelling tokens at the Brentwood toy fair. Thats it for now, be back later.
  18. To get the proper fish dock smell the kipper will have to be at least a month old.
  19. I am well aware of that junction, not as bad as the double roundabout in Brentwood town centre which I try to avoid most times.
  20. Morning all from Estuary-Land. A bit late on parade this morning but I've no idea where the time has gone. I tried one of those Lindt chocolate bars, this one had a sort of Japanese horseradish in it, not to my taste though. The mango lassi sounds good and while on the subject of food I have found that there is a delicasy local to Essex and Suffolk called Kitchel, the recipe makes my mouth water. Its basically a strudell made with almond paste instead of apple about the size of a sausage roll. I have the recipe and I'll post it here when I can find it again. EDIT. Thats the name I was trying to remember, wasabi.
