  1. Morning all from Estuary-Land. On the subject of electric cars and recharging the batteries. There is a tram system in France (I cant recall exactly where) that runs through a very old part of the city and for aethstetic reasons overhead wires were banned, also safety regulations meant that any ground collection such as conduit or studs was also a no go. The solution was battery trams recharged by induction coils beneath the road surface at stops with no physical connection. This appears to be the way to go with electric cars with induction coils beneath driveways, parking bays and maybe even at traffic lights. With no physical contact and no neccessity to plug in it would eliminate the need for special charging bays.
  2. I'm seriously thinking about an electric car, now if they offered a people carrier version of this definitely so. http://www.morris-commercial.com/morris-j-type/
  3. Ironically castrol 'R' is more enviromentally friendly than most oils as it is a vegetable oil.
  4. Morning all from Estuary-Land. A bit late on parade this morning as for some reason I couldn't get off to sleep last night. I finally got off to sleep about 4 o'clock as a result of of trying to finish the soduko that was in a pull out with last Sunday's paper. Instead of the usual 3X3 and 9 boxes this one is 4X4 and 16 boxes. Chris, if the teenagers I've seen waliking about lately is anything to go by they will gladly pay a fortune for holed and torn jeans. I read a couple of the reports, one mentioned a cloud of dust when he ejected at low altitude. In my case it would not be a cloud of dust.
  5. Its amazing what you can find on your doorstep. A few days ago a display of vintage petrol pumps dating as far back as 1910 was posted on Facebook. A nicely laid out 'museum quality' display with boards giving the history of each item. Biggest surprise to me was that it was only 10-15 minutes drive from my home. The display is in the reception of a company named Gilbarco who specialise in fuel pumps. As far as I am aware the display is not open to the general public but I intend to contact the company to find out. FYI the company is based in Basildon not far from the New Holland tractor plant.
  6. Morning all from Estuary-Land. Its amazing what interesting items are on your doorstep that few people are aware of. Some photos were put on Facebook a few days ago of a collection of vintage petrol pumps, the oldest dating from 1910. A nicely laid out display with information boards describing the exhibits. Reading through the comments revealed that this particular display is in Basildon, about 10-15 minutes drive from my house. They are on the premises of a company called Gilbarco and displayed in the reception area. I am not certain as to if they're on public display so I intend to give the company a call. I have never heard of the company before but the oldest (1910) pump has a cast plate with the company name on it.
  7. It is getting difficult now to operate such stock on the main line apart from things like certification. Upgrades of the main line such as increases of voltage and advanced signalling systems means that a lot of this stock is now unsuitable.
  8. Morning all from Estuary-Land. Amazingly quiet around here this morning, but then living as I do within a couple of hundred metres of both a junior and secondary school I would expect it to be so. Had quite a bit of rain last night rattling on the windows but not much sign of rain this morning and even the sun appeared from behind the cloud for a few minutes. It must have been quite chilly early this morning as the heating was on when I woke up at six, but at least the towels were nicely warm when I took a bath. So long for now, be back later.
  9. The K-WY Bristol was registered in 1938 and as built would have had the higher 'shield' radiator. The body is by Roe, not ECW and it was re-bodied in 1950.
  10. Condolences NHN and goodnight all.
  11. Afternoon all from Estuary-Land. Went out to do a bit of shopping today and decided to pop into the local Smiffs for this months Back Track. I got 'caught short' and had to use the facilities in the local shopping centre. The detour took me past the local Debenhams were I espied another branch of Patisserie Valerie ensconced. Somehow I found myself walking in to purchase some of the delights.
  12. That is per locomotive not for all 7. Two have been sold.
  13. Morning all from Estuary-Land. My first name is spelt with two L's, the reason is obvious when you know that my mum was a royalist and I am only a few months older than Charlie-boy. It can cause problems if people spell it with one L. My surname is quite common, in the area around Newcastle-upon-Tyne but my family comes from Gravesend where the family was the only one with that particular name. One of my great grandmothers maiden name was Mogg, a name which only appeared in the mid 1500's when someone decided to change their surname and 'invented' the name Mogg. Unfortunately the reasons for doing so are lost in the mists of time but the religous and political upheavals of the time is probably something to do with it. One advantage is though it made researching that branch of the family quite easy as everyone with the name Mogg in their ancestry is related.
  14. Thats my evening wasted, I'm going to spend the rest of this evening going through that lot. I'd like to get a bit more information about the one re-bodied as a bus in Australia that has retained the Matador axles (and four wheel drive?).
  15. How not to make friends and influence people.
  16. I too had one of those Japanese kits, I paid £4 for it as one coach and some parts of the other coaches were missing. I did sell it on but instantly regretted it.
  17. Morning all from Estuary-Land. Sun shining brightly at the moment but five minutes ago there was a heavy shower. I suppose I should start getting on with the shed, haven't done a thing to it for several weeks now and somehow its been filled with clutter. Enjoy your holiday AndyR and good luck in your new job. So long for now, be back later.
  18. Mine are fitted separately to the flexible pipes so I don't have any problems.
  19. I have the same but I also have isolator valves fitted to every tap below the flexible links so if I had a similar problem I would only have to turn off the individual tap. I've even got an isolator valve fitted to the loo cistern.
  20. Thats what I was thinking.
