  1. The problem was that the Brighton system was largely of German design (and manufacture?) and during the 20's anti German feelings were high and the idea of developement of the system was not popular.
  2. But what if he hits it to the boundary?
  3. Armstrong-Whitworth drew up plans for a 4-4-0 diesel locomotive in the 1930's for the GWR. Drawings show it to have a box like body with a sloping bonnet over the pony truck.
  4. Morning all from Estuary-Land. Quite bright, even sunny this morning but not predicted to last. Must have slept well as I didn't hear the normal Thursday dawn chorus of the bin lorries, though the bags have disappeared so we must have had a visitation. Not much else to report, be back later.
  5. Glad your back Smiffy and goodnight all.
  6. Just been perusing some of the modelling groups on Farcebook, someone is asking where can you get a brass magnet.
  7. Morning all from Estuary-Land. Not a lot to report this morning, weather forecast is dry with some cloud. Thats it for now, be back later.
  8. Morning all from Estuary-Land. A bit gloomy this morning but otherwise dry. They were talking about various creatures that could arrive in your house via the toilet bowl on BBC Breakfast this morning, most seem to have sharp teeth.
  9. Evening all from Estuary-Land. It seems that being chucked off a Facebook moderating team is not such a bad thing after all. I now spend only half the time on Facebook than I used to. As to cars, my car which I purchased brand new is now over nine years old (08 reg.) but as I have only completed 22,000 miles in that time and it has been serviced regularly, only needing a replacement clutch and tyres I see no need to replace it yet.
  10. Morning all from Estuary-Land. Dank and miserable here this morning as well but quite cosy indoors. As Rick said the internet and Facebook in particular seem to be playing up with Facebook 'freezing' for a few seconds. The answer seems to be come out and switch the computer off for a few seconds and then restart. Thats it for now, be back later.
  11. Evening all from Estuary-Land. GDB, what name do you go by on Facebook? A lot of ER's are on Facebook as you are probably aware and many I'm sure will want to become your friend on Facebook. Rick, post # 157936? I noticed this evening that I hadn't rated it which is unusual as I had rated the posts either side. I don't recall seeing it this morning so perhaps it had just gone AWOL for a short while.
  12. Thats also why you don't see many Volvo 760's around. The hot rodders discovered that the back axle/diff could take the power of a large V8 without disintegrating.
  13. Morning all from Estuary-Land. I have mentioned here before that I am an admin on some local history groups on Facebook, well not any more it seems. A couple of weeks ago I found that I had been removed from the closed group where admins discussed matters that were not for public consumption. I contacted the groups owner who agreed that it was probably Facebook having one of its funny turns. However I was not reinstated to the admin group and whenever I tried to contact the group owner I got the message 'not available'. However the group owner has apparently tried to contact me but I have been unable to reply. I have since been removed as an admin from those groups and from one group altogether. As far as I'm aware I haven't done anything to offend anyone and there has been no explanation for this. I am a bit suspicious because I am still a member of other groups in the same 'set' and another similar group was hijacked by a particular person who then blocked the existing owner/admins. Its also possible that the groups owners account has been hacked but I think that this is unlikely as he is an IT professional.
  14. I wonder if there's a market for dummy dash cams? I know someone who's dashcam failed but he left it on the dashboard as it seemed to discourage aggressive driving.
  15. Someone actually built a mid engined Allegro as you described. The only difference was that it was on an estate bodyshell. Externally it looked like a standard model and the owner delighted in giving boy racers a shock at the traffic lights.
  16. Eastern National had ten Bedford-Beadles in all, Very early in their lives the Bedford 6 cylinder petrol engines were replaced by Gardener 4LW diesel engines. Nine of these buses when EN withdrew them in 1960 were sold on to an operator in Macau where they gave up to another ten years service.
  17. Morning all from Estuary-Land. Happy birthday Tony. Just after signing off last night I noticed that water was coming in via the join between the flat roof of the porch and the wall of the house. A quick inspection this morning revealed that something had lifted a bit of the flashing, probably birds looking for insects. This was facing directly into the wind and rain last night so the water had been blown in there. So its out with the sealant and a hammer (to knock the flashing back into place) this afternoon. The roof itself is fibreglass and has proved to be very durable over the last 30 years or so. Thats it for now, be back later.
  18. Wind, wet, hailstones and thunder and lightening outside at the moment, but its goodnight all though I won't be going to bed yet.
  19. Going by the condition of the bike it looks as if the bike frame came in contact with the live rail. Possibly the bikes chain was the contact point.
  20. Morning all from Estuary-Land. Awoke this morning to the usual dawn chorus of the bin lorries, albeit a day late due to the bank holiday. Now its all quiet again except for the tree pruners/lawnmowers buzzing away. When painting and detailing model stonework I use any odd bits of paint of any colour to pick out individual stones then using acryllics apply several thin coats of the top coat colour. This leaves a subtle difference in the shade and colour of the stones so treated just like many natural stones.
