  1. And the very few Hurricanes which outnumbered Spitfires by more than two to one.
  2. Morning all from Estuary-Land. Talking of speaking different languages, many years ago a young lady colleague had a neice who was born deaf. As a result she undertook to learn sign language. Her friend who she went to school with also took lessons and both girls became very adept at signing. They found it very useful especially when going to disco's etc. When they used it many people assumed they were deaf despite both having excellent hearing. One evening one young bloke made a lewd or suggestive remark thinking the girls were deaf and got his face slapped, much to the amusement of his mates.
  3. Afternoon all from Estuary-Land. Went to the toy fair purchased a few bits but nothing caught my eye. All this talk of smelling boots reminded me of a scandal in the distant past. A politician had a thing about guardsmens boots (or was it socks), he liked to sniff them after the said guardsmen had marched a few miles. Does any one remember?
  4. I can think of several people who would happily pay a lot of money for such an experience.
  5. Morning all from Estuary-Land. A quick hello and goodbye as I'm off to the toy fair shortly, be back later.
  6. It was pretty obvious that London Country wanted to drop the East London Greenline services. The RP's which replaced the RCL's weren't too bad if a bit short of legroom. The Leyland Nationals that replaced the RP's drove passengers away, as was intended with their plastic covered bus seats and noisy engines.
  7. They most certainly are not roosting in the clubhouse and AFAIK there are no buildings in the vicinity that are suitable, the nearest buildings have only gone up in the last 20 years or so.
  8. The RCL's were identical when they were first delivered to Romford London Road (RE) but I wouldn't know how long that lasted.
  9. Morning all from Estuary-Land. Woke up at four this morning to find the slugs, two of them slithering across the carpet. Both were collected in a piece of kitchen paper, given a good dose of salt and the resulting gooey mess binned. Not much else to report so its be back later.
  10. Very sorry to hear that Mike. Hopefully it has been caught in time.
  11. Evening all from Estuary-Land. I've finally gone and done it, I've suggested on the Diesels on Pendon thread that they run Thomas the Tank Engine next. Now that I've lit the blue touch paper I shall retire to a safe distance to watch the fireworks.
  12. I once drove a Transit minibus (breadvan type) with the beam front axle. The problem was the front shock absorbers were shot and every time you hit a bump the front wheels would lift off of the ground at more than 30 mph.
  13. Any thoughts on running Thomas the tank engine on Pendon?
  14. Didn't you point out to her that it was the American spelling?
  15. When I last visited Malta they were still operating the original Maltese buses alongside some more modern types. I took a bus trip, the outward journey on a modern type with thin seat cushions and my knees jammed up against the seat in front. On the return journey was on one of the classic Maltese buses, comfortable well padded seats and plenty of legroom.
  16. Last Wednesday was the usual model railway club night, the clubhouse is situated on the perimeter of a local park. The clubhouse was a bit warm so some of us went outside just as dusk was falling. To our surprise we saw several bats flitting around just as darkness fell. I assume that they roost somewhere in the trees surrounding the clubhouse as there are no other suitable roosts in the neighbourhood. Not certain of the species but they were slightly bigger than a sparrow.
  17. Morning all from Estuary-Land. Just paid the milkman this morning, less the one pint that was missing on Monday. I telephoned their call number and had it taken off the bill, I had enough on hand. It is obvious that the call centre is some way east of Estuary-Land but I didn't realise how far east, the Phillipines no less according to the milkman. In my younger days I tried a dating agency and got a mixed bag, the other girl was OK though. Other relationships though were all my own work but all finished without any unpleasantness. Muggatee awaits so its be back later.
  18. Evening all from Estuary-Land. Just been looking at the diesels on Pendon thread, the froth is really foaming. I am tempted to suggest that they run Thomas the tank engine instead of diesels, well he is steam after all. ;)
  19. The van between the ammunition wagon and the locomotive looks continental, possibly one of the French ferry vehicles trapped on this side of the channel and taken over by the military.
  20. A very useful building for kit bashers, along with the Airfield control tower. (Which was based on an actual prototype, the standard WW2 RAF type.) As for filling stations for inspiration there's a very good group on Facebook, 'The golden years of the great British petrol station', its a closed group so you have to join up to view but its well worth it.
