  1. Morning all from Estuary-Land. The bin wagon dawn chorus was a day late due to the bank holiday but still included the lesser spotted glass and bottle wagon. I'll be having a word with my friend later about going out on Sunday to the RH&DR were they will also be having a bus rally which will please his young lad, thanks Keith for the heads up on the old buses thread. C&C's to all that require them, muggatee awaits so its be back later.
  2. Morning all from Estuary-Land. Happy birthday Mal and welcome to the pensioners club. Andy, glad to see that the black dog is back in his kennel, ChrisF, I hope you get your trip sorted to your satisfaction and C&C's to any other ER's I may have omitted. Quite bright and sunny this morning and its predicted to last over the weekend. Nothing planned for this weekend either but the next couple of weeks will be busy visiting shows etc. Thats it for now, muggatee awaits, be back later.
  3. Evening all from Estuary-Land. Had to drive very carefully down my street coming home from the club this evening. A lot of foxes around including one curled up in the middle of the road but he soon moved when the car approached. They're probably this years cubs who the vixen has pushed out of the den.
  4. Thats called 'heave', it usually occurs when a large tree has been removed. Trees soak up an enormous amount of water, several hundred litres of water in a DAY. Once the tree is removed the surrounding soil swells and can damage nearby buildings.
  5. Afternoon from Estuary-Land. Met up with my friend lunchtime, he had spent the bank holiday visiting his brother leaving just his eldest daughter (18 years old) at home. When he got back yesterday, a bit earlier than expected he caught his daughter in bed with her boyfriend. He read her the riot act but there's not much else he can do. At least the liquid sunshine has ceased and been replaced by the real stuff but still feeling a bit nippy.
  6. Morning all from Estuary-Land. A bit damp first thing this morning but it looks as if its drying up now. What with one thing and another I haven't made any progress on the shed so I went down to the big orange shed for some bits and pieces, at the same time I was able to pick up some offcuts of MDF for free. Now I have to clear the shed of all the stuff that has been dumped there over the last six or seven months before I can make any progress. Muggatee awaits so its be back later.
  7. They changed locomotives en-route, I can't remember where now. A GWR loco did venture further up the GCR in error, until its cylinders came in contact with a platform edge.
  8. The cobbles for the horse drawn tramway were a legal requirement imposed on the tramway companies as it was considered that the tram horses would wear a groove in the road. The act was never repealed and tram operators were still required to maintain the roads around their tracks even when trams were mechanically powered. Note that the cobbles around the tram tracks form a better road than the rest of the road.
  9. Evening all from Estuary-Land. Like Jamie's colleague I saved up my holiday entitlement in readiness for retirement. Problem was the HR department faffed and farted about so much that I should have been taking my leave by the time they got it sorted. I was due to retire 31st of March and they didn't get things sorted until the end of February, and I had almost 7 weeks of leave to come. The end result was that for the last two weeks I was actually working I was paid double, and my last day at work was 28th February though I was paid until my official leaving date.
  10. They're the same type of wheel but reversed. Lorry wheel centres are offset so that dual tyres can be used on carrying axles. Some of the trailers are 'four-in-line', basically two axles side by side instead of one behind the other. These are fitted with single tyres as there's insufficient width for dual tyres. These are probably the wheels that appear to be convex from the side.
  11. And the curved roof, (to fit within the UK loading gauge?).
  12. That must be the wheelbase of the rail/road unit under the rear of the body.
  13. Morning yet again from Estuary-Land. Just returned from the milk depot and arranged for the milk to be left where it can't be seen. The parking area outside the depot is festooned with signs warning that if you don't 'pay and display' your car will be clamped. As my business only took about five minutes max I ignored the signs. When I returned to my car I saw the parking company van parked a few vehicles away so I got out of there quickly, just as well as in my mirror I saw a chap carrying a wheel clamp towards where I had been parked. I told them in the depot about the theft of the milk and they suggested calling the police, not very helpful as I only have a suspicion as to who is stealing it. Not a lot else to report, C & C's to all that require them, be back later.
  14. Morning all from Estuary-Land. A trip down to the local milk depot is in order this morning. No milk on the doorstep again yesterday for the third Monday in a row. However there was a pamphlet left by the milkman that was marked by the bottle left on it so it looks as if we have a milk thief. I will either have to make arrangements for the bottle to be placed out of sight or re-arrange delivery to another day. The alternative is to wait up all night or rise early to catch the bu@@er in the act, not easy as the layout of the house means that the living accomodation is at the back.
  15. Evening all from Estuary-Land. John, thanks for the news of Debs and I hope now she is on the way to recovery.
  16. ???? are you sure your posting on the right thread?
  17. I wonder if their grandkids will be allowed to play in a disused quarry today.
  18. I have the same problem, they usually sneak out after dark but I did see a large one crossing the living room carpet when the room was lit. It was duly collected in a piece of kitchen paper, well salted and binned. When I visited Barbados about 40 years ago the hotel was a series of lodges set in a garden, the slugs got into the lodges but there they were a foot or more long and about an inch in diameter.
  19. In 'Lawrence of Arabia' I spotted several vehicles dating from WW2 or later. And in a scene set near the Suez canal a vessel on the canal was a modern diesel ship.
