  1. I wonder if it could possibly be 65869 ,which was a Blyth engine. Seen here at South Blyth shed.
  2. Looks like the mystery of the J27's number continues... I can see the buffer beam is different. Thanks.
  3. I've had a look at the original photo with a magnifying glass and the last number is a 9, so I'm also thinking it's 65859. The loco was actually transferred from York to North Blyth in April 1966 and withdrawn in September 1966. Thanks to all for the help in identifying the loco,
  4. It's not 65857. The loco was withdrawn in 1963. Thanks for looking.
  5. Thanks. I think you may be right. BR database shows the loco withdrawn from North Blyth on 31/7/66. The photo was probably taken a few weeks before withdrawl. I remember a sunny summer day. (rare for North Blyth)
  6. Enjoying this thread very much and learning more about the J27s which were an everyday sight back in the 1960s for me. I wonder if someone could identify the number of the J27 in this photo I took at North Blyth in 1966.
  7. Humbrol do 'Dark Earth' #29 in rattle cans which gives good results.
  8. A couple of OBAs weathered and now in timber service and a view from the road bridge.
  9. Yes. I guess I've loved trains from an early age. I also remember, again around the age of 5 or 6, being taken on the footplate of a steam loco, (probably a J27), by my uncle who was an engine driver at North Blyth. I remember the roaring fire in the firebox and the noise and mixed feelings of fear and excitement. I currently model BR Blue, early 1980s.
  10. I travelled there by train from Northumberland in the 1950s. Direct train from Newcastle Central to Butlins Filey station. Although, I was only 5 or 6 years old my memory recalls a large loco with smoke deflectors. I like to think it would have been an A1 pacific. After a couple of days, my parents discovered that I developed chicken pox. I was immediately dispatched home in an ambulance with my very disgruntled dad!
  11. Polak used to have a UK distributor and retail shop located adjacent to the NYMR at Pickering. I picked up some static grass when I visited a couple of years. Not sure if they are still in operation but they still have a website. https://polakscenics.uk/shop/
  12. Yes, You're correct, I just looked at my copy of the book. Not sure about the wagons. The next 2 are OBAs.
  13. I used to buy both Mininatur static grass and grass tufts from them online and all items were delivered promptly. However, in the last couple of years all the items I wanted have been 'out of stock'. I'm sure there would be no problem in them supplying items that they do have in stock.
  14. A few random pics of the, now completed, layout.
  15. Funny that you should mention ideas for a layout. At lunchtime today, I returned to having a look at 'Modelling British Railways - Wagonload Formations'. I hadn't read the section on 'China Clay' and that got me thinking about the next project. Perhaps a paper mill, early 2000s , I have an EWS 37,66 and 67 and there are some great wagons available. Oh dear, there's far too much inspiration in this publication......
  16. Back in 1984 I made a trip along the scenic West Highland Line extension from Fort William to Mallaig behind steam heat 37191. First pic shows 37191 waiting to depart Mallaig. The second shows the loco in 1985 having been displaced by ETH fitted 37/4s on WHL passengenger duties. With it's boiler isolated, now reduced to performing mundane shunting at Craiglang.
  17. Interesting observation. The photo was taken at Ashington Colliery in 1954 and ,presumably, the wooden bodied hoppers are NCB types. Here is another photo taken much later in August 1967 at Newsham, Northumberland which shows a mix of wagon types with 2 wooden bodied wagons at the front and, on the left , a 16 year old Alcanman! Sadly, by this time Blyth's last few remaining J27s had been transferred to Sunderland
  18. Agree. I been waiting over 50 years for a RTR model J27. I can wait a little longer.
  19. A couple of pics to show the entire layout.
  20. My Platform 5 pocketbook of 2017 lists 66733, 66736/7, 66740 , 66743 and 66746. Here is 66740 running around the Alcan tanks at Newsham, Northumberland before heading north.
  21. Jack and Victor stop for a chat on their way to 'The Clansman'
  22. Made a few more timber loads this week.
  23. 40 years ago it was fun upgrading Hornby diesels, but things have moved on and my next class 25/3 will be from SLW!
  24. My favourite 26s were those based at Inverness fitted with Twin headlamps, headcode discs and mini snow ploughs. The model is based on my photo of 26032 at Inverness. A 7mm version would be superb especially with sound. If I had the space and the money, I would love one.
