You mentioned Carlisle and Newcastle.
Both have good facilities but Carlisle seems more popular with enthusiasts. To be honest both are less interesting freight wise these days, particularly Newcastle. Both have quite frequent passenger services from a small selection of different operators. Both stations are within a reasonable walk of the main shopping areas.

Nothing to do with Christmas though, just decided to use this new fangled bullhead track on the branch.
