  1. I did mine with Wickes Paintbrush Cleaner, the blue stuff, and flushed with soapy water. This was AFTER stripping it all down, obviously. And none was used anywhere NEAR the motor.

Every part was then either greased on moving surfaces, or sprayed and rubbed over with WD40 on exposed surfaces.

  2. Thanks for that, Bertie, I'll look into Chronos for a parting tool then.

The collet chuck that came with the mill was different to the one for the lathe, which fits to the spindle with three bolts, like the chucks do. The mill one fit on a taper. Probably a Morse?

Sorry, double post. Can't find which one of those you mean, they go from £14 to £8..........

  3. Bertie: my lathe is an Emco Compact 5. The only tools I have for it, apart from metric drills, are a set of 1/4" tool-steel ground tools, l/h, r/h and end, made for me by a friend I used to work with, (ie: ground to shape).

They work, but need to be shimmed up to centre height.

I'll try and take measurements off the lathe, like what size tool will fit, and the clearances you mentioned on the drawing, tonight, once the loft has cooled down a bit.

I'll also try and further identify the milling machine, but I do know it has a co-ordinate table with it. I have a collet chuck and full set of 25mm collets, but no LATHE collet chuck although there is one on e-bay at £56 at the moment. I could also do with a fine feed attachment for the milling machine, it has just a lever at the moment, like a pillar drill, which it greatly resembles. It also has a decent 0-10mm keyed chuck for drilling etc.

    Thanks.

  4. Right, here's a question.

At the moment, I don't even have a parting-off tool. (I use a hacksaw blade held on the rotating piece with enough pressure to cut it, then face it off if necessary..........and yes, I know it's dangerous <_< )

I've oredered one off e-bay wityh an inserted blade, only to have the seller cancel as he's stopping selling them after having too much trouble with faulty items.:(

I've found others and e-mailed the seller to see if it will fit my lathe, but don't understand his reply.

    Here's the item: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350343469663&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

and this is what he said to my question: Please measure from where the tool sits in your toolpost to the centre of the chuck so i can check your capacity.

I asked if he meant from bottom of tool rest to centre height, and he replied: Sorry no, on your toolpost when you put your turning tools in this i need to know from where the tool sits to the centre of the lathe.

I STILL don't understand what he means:blink: Since my tool post MOVES on a cross slide, won't this value be meaningless?

    I've also seen these: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250651033502&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

    Can someone advise? Thanks.

  5. Just had a look here: http://www.lathes.co.uk and it's very disappointing. I wanted to look at what they had to say about the Compact 5, but it's all about the Compact 8, the 5 gets a 2-line mention :(

Also, the milling machine I have doesn't even get mentioned :( :( :(

The only thing I've ever used the milling machine for is accurate drilling, I don't even own an end mill and wouldn't know where to start, or what type to buy.

  6. A day late- but a day of dental trauma yesterday intervened.

Rather simplistic day to York and back which included the first time to recently opened NRM. We also managed to get a guided tour around York depot which included an engine room walk through and trip back down the yard in 40 070. Now THAT was impressive and very memorable, a cab ride in a whistler. We also saw ten Deltics in traffic in one afternoon, so really the golden age of diesel traction back in 1975. I must have lost some numbers as there are some mysterious omissions (for example where were the electrics at Birmingham?). Occasionally these tours would bypass BNS, perhaps that was one such day, but just can't remember.

Just seen this: We went on a few Merrymakers from Scunthorpe in Humberside, as was, in the early 70's, a few of which went through Birmingham. They ALWAYS took the avoiding line at Saltley, usually waiting at signals there for a crew change. If you were lucky you saw the occasional electric pass overhead, and once a Western coming off New street in the dark, heading to Saltley. It was a warm night and we had stood for ages, but we had powerful torches so the Western was captured for posterity.

What sticks in my mind is staring out of the carriage windows in the vestibule, window down, hoping something would come before we moved off. We heard the Western coming well before we saw it. Been to Cardiff, IIRC.

The neon sign, "Landore Street Carpets" also sticks in my mind for some reason. Wonder if they still exist?

Funny, the trips always came from Cleethorpes, and featured an Immingham crew to start with, but were almost always a 45, none of which were allocated to Immingham.
