  1. Clearly the tender springs were getting tired - that enormous coal load has produced a distinct dip at the cab end. John Isherwood.
  2. Sorry - £269.99 is a stupid price to pay for any mass-produced model locomotive; let alone a further price increase! I appreciate that there are a lot of potential purchasers with too much money, who will pay whatever Hornby choose to charge. However, there are also a great many potential purchasers, such as myself who, some time ago, said "Enough is enough"! I don't buy RTR any more. What will be critical in the future is the volume of the former category who remain committed, in the face of inevitably ballooning prices brought on by diminishing demand. There will come a day of reckoning! John Isherwood.
  3. Seriously though - with all the multiplicity of electronic gubbins being built into today's models - WHY are interior lights so ludicrously bright? Could it be that the manufacturers know that potential purchasers haven't the faintest idea how dim the lighting was back then? Who would pay for lighting that can barely be detected - even if it was authentic? John Isherwood.
  4. At 14mm. dia., I'd guess 4mm. scale - probably 16.5mm. gauge. John Isherwood.
  5. I have to say that, to my eyes, I can see nothing whatsoever out-of-kilter with the loco. John Isherwood.
  6. If there's an own brand, I buy it - the savings to be made are substantial! John Isherwood.
  7. I am not an advocate of 'dumbing-down' - far from it. What I do support is knowing when a 'defect' is worthy of adverse commemt - or not! John Isherwood.
  8. ....... only if you are one of the tiny minority of potential purchasers who KNOW - OR CARE - that the boiler band should line up with the rivets! John Isherwood.
  9. Alternatively, leave the chassis mouldings as they are supplied, and cut an equivalent thickness from the Parkside mounting blocks, using a razor saw. John Isherwood.
  10. That's rod - what is sought is 1mm. square section. John Isherwood.
  11. What gearing are you thinking of adding? I just turned up two winding drums from brass rod to take the rigging cord. John Isherwood.
  12. They MAY be prepared to supply a more suitable length, pro-rata. John Isherwood.
  13. Correction - you mean the Hornby 'Caledonianish' coaches. They do not represent any GWR prototype, they are actually the Hornby 'Caledonian' coaches in brown and cream livery. They are merely fictitious 'Caledonianish' sides inserted into BR Mk.1 models. John Isherwood.
  14. Not sure what R26/7 are - do you mean the clerestories? If you refer to the corridor clerestories, I believe that they do not accurately represent any prototype - not least because they lack panelling! John Isherwood.
  15. Better still - look out for legacy Airfix kits on Ebay - MUCH sharper detail and MUCH better plastic. John Isherwood.
  16. The Incorporation Act of the Oakington & Cottenham Light Railway, and the deposited plans - which show the centreline and the limits of permitted deviation - are held by the Cambridgeshire Records Office. John Isherwood
  17. My recollection is that the Act specified narrow gauge. As most of the route was to be on road verges; Cottenham High Street not being particularly wide; and bearing in mind the sharp corners at the brickworks branch junction, and adjacent to the church, standard gauge might not have been practicable. John Isherwood.
  18. The Parkside 16'6'' / 10'0'' chassis. would be spot-on for a 1/007 20T PIG IRON, though! John Isherwood.
  19. The Heljan does look as if it's eaten all the pies! John Isherwood.
  20. I gather that 'Home Bargains' launched their Christmas range today! John Isherwood.
  21. Perhaps for that precise reason? Maybe the frame was out of commission for some reason? John Isherwood.
  22. I did - my local Bodmin & Wenford Steam Railway; not interested! As above, the lot - all 650kg. of them - went for recycling! CJI.
  23. No doubt someone will pick holes but, to me, THAT is an English Electric Type 3! John Isherwood.
