  1. I wouldn't do that if I were you - if they can make £20 for saying "Sorry, we can't do anything with that" they're making easy money, and have no incentive to even try and make a repair. What you are trying to do is not difficult for any reasonably competent modeller who knows how to source suitable components. Do you not know anyone who could do this for you? John Isherwood.
  2. Why not e-mail Harburn Hobbies with the photo attached and ask them if they can fix it? John Isherwood.
  3. Ours is too - we burn seasoned hardwood logs; (a tipper lorry load each autumn); and there is virtually no smoke. John Isherwood.
  4. Surely there can be nobody who doesn't relish the smell of a real log fire? John Isherwood.
  5. Something odd is going on - I've seen that message too. Also, we were charged for delivery for the first time this week - priority delivery has been free hitherto. I have a feeling that Asda's original commitment to provide free delivery slots to vulnerable customers may have expired at the end of October - despite the new lockdown / self-isolating. John Isherwood.
  6. Been there, done that years ago with a Lima model. John Isherwood.
  7. A perfectly tenable position - and one that I respect - but with that goes a limitation as to what one can own when it comes to rolling stock; (unless deep pockets are available)! For my part, I don't greatly enjoy achitectural or scenic modelling. For that reason, I have selected that part of my chosen modelling location - Evercreech Junction - that excludes most of the station / level crossing area, whilst retaining the operational interest. I'd love to own an accurate model of the most scenic part of the station, but I don't want to spend my time building the necessary infrastructure. Life is a compromise. John Isherwood.
  8. Funny how perceptions vary - I thought it remarkably attractive and forward-thinking for a loco of 1935/6 vintage. first vulcan frichs loco-1.pdf Chacun son goût !! John Isherwood.
  9. a] the Peco Simplex coupling is a patented design; b] the adaptations as I manually produce them are not commercially viable; c] I offered the adaptation design to Peco - who expressed interest; did some design and prototyping work; announced that they would be making them commercially available; and then dropped the idea!! Been there, done that, got nowhere. John Isherwood.
  10. They did indeed, and if you look at the underside of any Hornby Dublo metal coupling you will find the patent numbers stamped therein. John Isherwood.
  11. Interesting - it found its way to Trieste after the war, working for the UNRRA; did it ever return to the UK? John Isherwood.
  12. Thanks to a link in the Beyond Dover thread, I found this. A product of Vulcan Foundry, clearly - but not one that I recall having come across previously. It'd make a lovely model ..... from someone such as Michael Edge !?! John Isherwood.
  13. Thanks for that - there are some very nice BR works photos there. Also this : - A products of Vulcan Foundry, clearly - but not one that I recall having come across previously. It'd make a lovely model ..... from someone such as Michael Edge !?! John Isherwood.
  14. It did with me - I have many hundreds of them on my stock; more recently, I've adapted them to fit in NEM pockets. Version 1 Version 2 The 'stem' in version 2 is 2.5 x 1.5mm. brass; bent and soldered to the coupling head. It pivots on a short length of wire inserted into a hole drilled through the centre of the NEM pocket. The wire can be pulled out to remove the coupling, and the NEM pocket then functions as intended. John Isherwood.
  15. I would totally agree that one cannot trust scanned images of old photos to accurately reproduce the original colours. What you can do, though, is use colour sampling to compare similar colours within the same image; it will give an indication as to whether they were the same colour or not. John Isherwood.
  16. Se Miss Prism's link above : http://www.gwr.org.uk/liverieslococolour.html John Isherwood.
  17. From my own colour sampling research, I would strongly support the view that the lining colour was chrome orange lining; (rgb 255,128,64). Regards, John Isherwood.
  18. I know that is 'each to his own', but I just can't get my head around this fad for putting bright lighting in everything - especially for models of the steam / early diesel era. If you saw a train after dark from the outside, the internal lighting was either invisible or, if close enough, barely discernable. We are so used nowadays to the full glare of bright lighting that it is forgotten that it was necessary to turn on individual reading lights in a carriage in order to read - and very few travellers did that. John Isherwood.
  19. Using colour sampling in Corel Photopaint, and depending on which particular pixels you select, there is remarkably little difference in the RGB code. John Isherwood.
  20. I would probably buy 10202 with connecting doors - but I couldn't wait, so I added my own doors to 10201. John Isherwood.
  21. Having seen this, I am now convinced that the lines are GWR chrome orange - it would seem that Swindon were trying to adapt the GWR steam loco lined livery to an unfamiliar body outline. I would concur that the sloping plating above the bufferbeams is black, including the angle iron, and that there is an orange line between the black and the green. Which now begs the question of exactly what the broad, three line bodyside lining was comprised of. Does an extreme enlargement of the colour photo help here? Could they all be orange lines - narrow/ gap / broad / gap / narrow? I would agree that the low bodyside line is too narrow to reproduce commercially - which won't stop me trying to print an appropriate transfer! John Isherwood.
  22. It's difficult to be sure - it could well be. On the other hand, the SR electrics had white / red / white lining. Copyright unknown. John Isherwood.
  23. I added a small yellow panel, and replaced the whistles with twin horns on my 10203. John Isherwood.
  24. ..... but only outdoors, and only well away from sources of ignition! I find that a scalpel blade, twisted between coach side and glazing, nearly always breaks the bond, not the glazing.
  25. I see what is happening - Delivery Pass customers - ie. those that pay for a Pass, (which I assume includes you), get 'first dibs' until 05/11. Those of us plebs with 'Priority' Passes - on the basis that we are vulnerable - don't get 'first dibs', and must dive into the scramble of the great unwashed, from 06/11 onwards! Some 'Priority' - what? John Isherwood.
