  1. That IS good news! Please post here an announcement of publication for this long-awaited tome. Thanks in anticipation, John Isherwood.
  2. A quick Google found this : - Glen's erudite comments are an example of the vast store of knowledge that he clearly possessed. John Isherwood.
  3. Indeed - that name does ring a bell. Glen must have amassed a huge volume of research material, judging from the information that he gave on the internet, etc. - do you know if any of it survived? John Isherwood.
  4. For quite a number of years, there was regular mention in the model railway press of a forthcoming, definitive book concerning milk tank wagons and their traffic. The author regularly responded to queries about the subject, and assured readers that the book, when published, would answer all such questions. The book, to the best of my knowledge, never appeared; and I'm afraid that I cannot now recall the name of its author. Does anyone else recall this prospective book; know the name of the author; or have any information as to the fate of what would have been an invaluable modelling source? John Isherwood.
  5. The original post had no capitalisation - you have grossly changed the context, and the aggressive tone has been created by you. I read nothing of that character in the OP. CJI.
  6. You didn't - they didn't exist!! Like so many of Wrenn and Dapol's products, they are a figment of the manufacturer's imagination. CJI.
  7. Klear IS acrylic varnish. I now apply my transfers INTO wet Klear - that way the transfer film is immersed and sealed within the Klear, and NO carrier film is visible. When dry, I spray Testors Dullcote for a completely matt finish. You need to be confident with waterslide transfers to apply them into wet Klear - it dries quickly! John Isherwood, Cambridge Custom Transfers.
  8. Klear before applying transfers; Klear over transfers to seal them; Testors Dullcote (or whatever you prefer to give the finish you desire). Why DO people believe that they have to apply their preferred finish directly to transfers? It is a recipe for almost certain disaster! John Isherwood, Cambridge Custom Transfers.
  9. I am confused! A vintage American A class motorhome would be left hand drive, surely? If right hand drive vehicles cannot be imported, a Routemaster is not viable. Some clarity would be 'cool'! CJI.
  10. Don't worry - we've all been on the receiving end at one time or another.😧 CJI.
  11. ..... or perhaps non-metallic grey cars are not allowed to cross the Cornish border? 😄 CJI.
  12. Surely a drawing would indicate if the boiler / firebox is correct and, if not, how much it needs to be increased in diameter? CJI.
  13. How can one improve on prototypical slow and smooth running? All of my locos - RTR and kit-built - run as slowly and start / stop as smoothly as the prototype. I have well-laid, Code 75 commercial track which requires virtually no cleaning; with every rail length having an individual feed / return. The stud comprises a huge variety of RTR locos, some dating back to the 1960s / 70s and some just released; plus a similar (large) number of kit-built locos. I maintain / build all locos with plenty of operational pick-ups. My controllers are based on (very cheap) Chinese voltage regulators, which provide excellent control - perhaps this is one reason why I get excellent running? As I have indicated above, DC can provide running qualities that cannot be bettered - though I have no doubt that DCC with stay-alives can compensate for a multitude of sins; (which should not have been committed in the first place)! CJI.
  14. I think that you overlooked the irony / sarcasm contained in the post to which you responded. CJI.
  15. Really?? All I seem to see are multifarious tones of metallic grey - including my own in 'Corris Grey', believe it or not! CJI.
  16. I'd be surprised if you'll find one; non-metallic grey is not a popular colour for cars! However, Precision do that colour; spray some on a sample card and take / send it to a car factor; they will fill a spray can with matching paint. CJI.
  17. Were you aware that the Dublo Deltic was released BEFORE the prototype, and that the early models were plain BR green? CJI.
  18. I use only Precision and Humbrol enamel paints. For diesel loco rooves, I use Humbrol 66 or Precision 130 - both have a greenish tinge, but are darker than the Dublo colour. To my eye, this gives the effect of a work-stained roof. CJI.
  19. Second only in parsimony to a Lancastrian like me! CJI.
  20. I have to agree. I astonishes me to read the volume of posts here relating to problems setting up CVs etc.; modifying turnouts to eliminate shorts; fitting capacitors/ stay-alives to ensure smooth running; isolating motors; etc., etc. when using DCC. Then there is the huge additional cost of fitting chips - I really don't see how this is going to be sustainable in our financially-challenged future. From the manufacturers' perspective, it was bound to be win-win; sell 'em the trains, and then a constantly evolving (becoming superceded) range of essential / expensive electronics with which to operate them. With my recently built garage layout, I have proved that it is perfectly possible to build a flexible, reliable, smooth running and easy to operate railway, using basic / cheap DC electronics. Yes - care is needed to construct the baseboards, lay the track, and install the wiring - but this is also true for DCC. Any amount of state-of-the-art gizmos will never eliminate the problems produced by poor workmanship. I will continue to buy RTR locos when required, and to be thankful that the basic DC versions are significantly cheaper than the DCC ones. CJI.
  21. Not sure that I would agree - my recollection of BR diesel loco roof grey is of a greenish shade. The Dublo EE Type 1 was contemporary with the prototype, and there was no suggestion at the time of a discrepency. In fact, Hornby Dublo had a reputation for accurately reproducing livery colours. CJI.
  22. I think that he is referring to the new version of pre-payment. CJI.
  23. The first dozen or so vans (at least) have had the same trader's label recently attached. CJI.
