  1. Was this loco bought new or secondhand? Whatever - it is clear that the wrong coupling-rod has been fitted. This could have happened at the factory - but unlikely - or under subsequent ownership. John Isherwood.
  2. The hole looks huge when compared to the crankpin head. I can see the pin head easily passing through the hole. John Isherwood.
  3. ...... but exactly what Halfords want you to do! John Isherwood.
  4. My (grown-up) son - an avid fan of Ivor - has pointed out that it would be best to supply a copy of the RRRRegulations with each set! Can't have amateurs operating a railway willy-nilly! John Isherwood.
  5. Be aware that it has been conceded that many of the designs from that source may never have been trial-printed. John Isherwood.
  6. ....as Paul said; "for those wanting to change to using proper couplings". John Isherwood.
  7. If only I had a quid for every bit of wiggling undertaken during 65 years of modelling! With a subject such as the LOWMAC, some intricate disposition of detail was inevitable. There is always the option of the Hornby Dublo / Wrenn version for those who prefer not to wiggle. John Isherwood.
  8. See I still think that the solution for removing the existing coupling is to remove the mounting screws. John Isherwood.
  9. Jeweller's screwdriver - at a slight angle. John Isherwood.
  10. So, what - if anything- is released by the removal of the two screw behind the headstocks? CJI.
  11. Usually a dead-end siding butting up to a raised surface - sometimes a bay platform - with a simple timber beam bufferstop. John Isherwood.
  12. The OP is looking for the origins of the grey / repainted black tank body in the first post - not the yellow model. John Isherwood.
  13. It must be remembered that the world of information was a VERY different place at the time of publication of the IA ABCs. What was published was, in the main, what was supplied by the Big Four / BR - and there would be different perspectives as to what should / needed to be published between the different companies / regions. Unless you had personal contact with the more obscure locos, how would you know that they existed? I was around in the 1950s / 60s but, even now, I am surprised to find a subject that had hitherto escaped my knowledge. Nowadays, everyone and his granny are posting (mis)information on the internet - the volume is often overwhelming! So, I would caution against cynical criticism of what was, and what was not published pre-internet - you need a whole different mindset to understand that. John Isherwood.
  14. Just wondering about the thread title - surely 18000, 18100, GT3, ?????? would be the fourth. ...... or are you suggesting that ?????? came before GT3? My understanding is that GT3 was conceived way back into the 1950s. John Isherwood.
  15. You may wish to read comment upthread concerning the colour of the Accurascale model. John Isherwood.
  16. Lakeland Quick Shine has been stated to be the same thing. John Isherwood.
  17. Around the same time, there was a series of article published about how to cut-and-shut Tri-ang clerestories into (almost) correct LSWR coaches; the results were VERY convincing. I wouldn't be surprised if that series sent Clive Mortimore down his 'hacking' path! John Isherwood

I've come across cut-outs in fall-plates to clear brake standards, but this one appears over-cautious. John Isherwood.
  19. A quick search for 'Bachrus' on Ebay would be productive. John Isherwood.
  20. Tony, I couldn't agree more - I bought the one with four sets of rollers some years ago. As you say - fully adjustable, extremely well built, and very stable. If they are no longer available, then it's a great loss to the hobby. John Isherwood.
  21. As someone in the same position as the proprietor of D&S Models I decided, 25 years ago when starting up, NOT to publish a phone number. I have never had cause to regret that decision. John Isherwood.
  22. Surely it should look like this? The chimney is MUCH shorter. John Isherwood.
  23. I'd like to see an Airfix-produced EE 350hp shunter- but I'm certain that they never existed! You're thinking of the Airfix Drewry shunter - which DIDN'T originate with Kitmaster. John Isherwood.
  24. Tony, The problem that you encountered with the loose layshaft was almost certainly due to over-enthusiastic opening-out of the etched holes in the gearbox sideframes. Your solution is an easy fix. Personally, I find that H-L gearbox assembly is a small price to pay for keeping the space below the boiler free of unprototypical machinery. I know, however, that you can overlook the latter in favour of fitting an off-the-shelf, assembled gearbox; albeit one that is less than suitable (visually) for the prototype. John Isherwood.
