  1. Sorry we already have a thread going about ‘non bargains’....... http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/22361-olivias-trains/?fromsearch=1
  2. Logs last night, too dark and cold for pics, may take the proper camera later though as I’m in the same job 57 in crewe Running round in Kingmoor And away to my taxi
  3. I was just about to type pretty much the same sentiment, 4 pages of sensible discussion, a bit of thread drift here and there but a balanced argument from all sides Now if there was an award for best ready to plant bullhead points..........
  4. Into the next coach, this one I drilled a little hole up the centre of the bogie So I could thread the fine wire up the centre of the pin Then onto the chassis, drilled a couple of holes in the sides Squared off and one of the flush mount LEDs pushed into the hole And powered from the track Then did the same thing with the PCB board as the last coach Decoder added And interior added Then found out the LEDs I bought from maplin we’re not white and the paint on the roof was a bit thin!! So primed the inside of the roof and once dry i gave it a coat of black too before fitting the correct colour led’s And the roof back in place with lights lit All coming together now Regards the capacitor, I fitted it to 993 coach and gave it a run round, I thought it didn’t make much of a difference so I took it off then realised it did make a difference, it didn’t stop the lights going out on dirty sections but it stopped them flickering. out of interest I had a look at the stay alive capacitor attached to a factory fit Hornby light bar and that one is 1000uf 16V so I’m going to get similar from maplin tomorrow and give that spec a try in my coaches 2 down 3 to go, the last 3 are easier to wire as there are no external lights on them thankfully
  5. the south end powercar is pretty much up against the signal as its not actually on the platform end, i took the photo beyond the signal, the wood you can see on the platform (bottom left) is where the gantry comes up and over and you can just about see the bottom of the signal at the top in all fairness going by 'professional driving policy' rules its too close to the signal but its obviously got to be to fit in the platform
  6. just 4 from last night, ballast at tipton, loco from crewe first then run round at oxley and onto site crewe waiting at stafford after collecting the train it was a run round in oxley waiting at wolverhampton then it was too dark/wet for pics, took it back to bescot and home
  7. Dagworth, that plaque looks to have taken inspiration from your ears (not saying your ears look like a trophy more the amount of metalwork!) Ok i’ll Stop digging now
  8. The captions are for the photo below it, the unknown loco is the Dutch livery one
  9. copyright 'an audience with ken dodd' 1991 tbh that the reply i normally give if someone asks me how id like to die
  10. I won a public vote for ‘best in show’ with my old warmington layout back in about 2009 at the romiley show, didn’t even know there was a competition on at the time until the chairman came up to me and presented me with a trophy! The layout didn’t have any lighting rigs, pelmets, facias boards etc, just mounted on a pair of cheap b+q wooden treadles with a cloth covering them but had lots going on, twinkly lights, signals, a few sound locos etc which must have captured the public imagination on the day as from a ‘technical’ point of view it was a very basic set up that was never really intended to leave Home Winning spurred me on to futher develop the layout and I had proposed adding facias etc and making it more robust to move to shows but unfortunaly redundancy put pay to that idea and the layout lived at home from then on until I sold it on
  11. It’s a new Hornby one, mick has told me how to do it, once the shafts are removed it will free wheel nicely and I can still add a decoder so the rear lights work
  12. Well I went to maplin and tried to get a 4700 mf 35v capacitor but it was huge, you certainly wouldn’t want to use one as a suppository that’s for sure Ended up getting a 470 mf 25v one to try, will report back with results when I try it
  13. Yep, LUL rules, I had the same happen at Moor Park when I worked for chiltern, it was then ‘at caution’ all the way to Northwood! Also as the signal I needed to pass at danger was on the end of the platform there the platform staff is the person who gives you authority to pass the signal at danger not the signaller!
  14. Thanks for that, the decoder has the wires already so if I ask for a capacitor to match the one in the link then it may do the job Would this do or is the 35V part of the spec too much https://www.maplin.co.uk/p/4700f-35v-105c-radial-electrolytic-capacitor-n97kf
  15. Johnster, You say your scenario driver is driving at low speed, 40mph heading to assist another train, sorry but that’s not slow speed in my book knowing there is a possible obstruction ahead
  16. Had a break from doing rolling stock and had an hour on the layout instead Cut down a Hornby footbridge To use on the platform Then had a look at the scale model scenery hard standing kit I got last week To use in the depot area I actually ordered 2 kits as I wasn’t sure what size I’d need but so far I’ve only used one, there was enough in the first kit to also build up the base as i’d not corked the area Walking route to the station Then added another strip to the outside of the rail which looks a lot better, when I get round to the scenics I’ll probably fill the ‘step’ with a bit of plaster
  17. Courtesy of mick Newbryford another 67 for my test train Going to remove the drive shafts so it can run on the rear of the train So to the workbench, first up got some peg board from the alsager show which I cut into a small strip To fit into the chassis of the coach Then wired the pick ups up And soldered to the board Also soldered the track LEDs to the board And then a decoder and wires to the internal lights And powered up Tidied up the wires Cut a hole in the interior inside the computer bank And in the bottom of the bodyshell To thread the lighting wire through And on with the roof All lit up And track lights lit So first coach done, only 4 to go One quick question, the decoder has 2 wires for a stay alive capacitor, what sort of thing should I be looking for in maplin?
  18. And some from today, conducting the RHTT from Hereford to shrewsbury Hst arrived in from Paddington Amazing how much it overhangs the back of the platform, only just inside the insulated block! It did however then shunt out and over to the up side to hear back to london RHTT set arrived and off we went to shrewsbury Where I got off and someone else took it back to Hereford (forum member 21Alizard was with me too) And off it went And Home I went on a full and standing 2 car 175
  19. It could possibly be that the ‘elderly unit’ is unbraked and the rulebook requires/required that the first and last 3 vehicles of the formation be braked to provide enough brake force, still happens today with the likes of the Lul s-stock moves to and from derby
  20. The johnster, Have you ever though you over think things?
  21. I went from Derby to Clapham jn via the MML, north london line and lots of other london suburban lines with a loco with no lights on at all after an MCB tripped and I never noticed while changing ends in derby, including stopping to pick up a route conductor at Leicester and no one noticed/reported it until Clapham town station!
  22. Today’s job was london to derby Started in crewe, RHTT pasisng through Filthy 56 on the rear Finally got a pic of the pend-albino Over to St Pancras, never fails to impress In connection with the New version of murder on the orient express, Choccy steam loco and coach! Down to the thameslink platforms for a train to West Hampstead Hst passing through We then discovered the driver bringing our train in had changed ends at cricklewood but didn’t tell us and was heading north to mill hill so we had to jump on a train to there and meet the train there! And into derby And that was that
  23. And the ‘unknown patriot’ stand has lots of various Lima And Bachmann locos cheap Bachmann NRM evening star for £90 Hornby Royal 67 (maroon ltd one) for £70
