  1. There were also the original EMUs for the Mersey Railway of definite US design, introduced in 1903 when the railway converted from steam to electric traction. The units were supplied by Westinghouse, with Baldwin running gear, though the bodies were actually built in the UK. (The wikipedia captioning is incorrect, the train has left Birkenhead Park and is going INTO the tunnel for Hamilton Square and thence the two Liverpool stations) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mersey_Railway Edit for spelling...
  2. I really do like your Denizens! So many dodgy looking people in dodgy looking hats.......
  3. How about one of those thugly Drummond Paddleboxes too?
  4. You couldn't do it with 14.2mm track, people would get confused with OO.....
  5. Talk of doubleheading 700s is like playing "Midland Small Engine Policy" (aka Silly Bu@@ers), its Just Not The Done Thing! If it can't be done with a 28/38xx, then you just need to go to a 47xx. However, if a 47xx isn't available then it is permitted to insert another 28xx, though with loads that large, you may have to consider the Einsteinian Tailback Phenomenon.
  6. Nothing to do with trains, or C4 or anything much, but with all the drivel on the box on Saturday evening, we, as a family, slumped in front of BBC4 and watched the WHOLE of "All Aboard! The Sleigh Ride". Two whole hours of watching a reindeers bum as it plodded through the snowy wastes of Norway above the Arctic Circle. Most relaxing!
  7. There's nothing like a few rakes of wrecked Mk1s!!!
  8. You'll have to search through the volume indexes as I can't remember WHEN it appeared, but Railway Bylines had an article on Winsfords branch line termini with photos and maps. And yes, it's RAILWAY STATIONS!
  9. But last night, it was £123.25 including delivery. Today, its £109.50 PLUS delivery, which at Rails usual £4 brings it up to £113.50. Thats a tad under £10 off yesterdays price. I was almost tempted by the greyed out image yesterday evening, and thought "must be at least down to £99.99". However, the tenner off doesn't do it for me, so I remain strong!!! Rails haven't made much of an effort this year...
  10. I'm currently agnostic about Hornbys 2018 programme. Yes it will be interesting as to what they are proposing but I've a Peckett on preorder that is currently slated for Q2 2018 and to be honest it'd take a ruddy great surprise to encourage me to consider any more locos or rolling stock at present! Anyhow, carry on frothing, chaps!
  11. As well as the coherer ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coherer ), you'll need a spark-gap transmitter ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spark-gap_transmitter ) to go with it. Think Titanic... What is the most amazing, is that Marconi got a signal from Newfoundland to Cornwall using such things!
  12. Wanna Mogul! But Q1/19 is long enough to watch the price creep upwards....
  13. For a crystal set to work, you have to have: A good long aerial wire A decent earth connection* A good coil wound on a hefty ferrite core A variable capacitor for tuning (60 microfarad AM) A germanium diode (OA91) A sensitive earpiece A dollop of luck! If you really want to push things, once you get the above working, swap the OA91 for a lump of Galena and a wire point for that real 20s Cats Whisker feeling! * We used to connect the earth to the central heating pipes, which formed a continuous soldered copper circuit, nowadays with poly microbore, it wouldn't work...
  14. Have you seen the BBC2 Christmas Ident? At one point a Triang "Nellie"* type loco goes around the bottom of the 2! * Its acually the green No 27.
  15. Oh go on, you missed the chance to admire her embonpoint too... Right, I'm for a cup of tea and a scone.
  16. Grone.... You can tell its a miserable Saturday in early December, can't you!
  17. Probably a GWR thing - Collet wasn't that impressed with "streamlining" either, although Staniers bathtub was a bit more full-on than Collets lumps and bumps!
  18. I don't have "facts" to back this assertion up, but I've a feeling that the reason that French ships sailed well was that they were largely new-built. The Royal Navy, on the other hand went to sea in ships that were sometimes decades old and had been laid up (often to rot) in dockyards during periods of peace. These ships were then thrashed all year round, enforcing the blockade of the French fleet in their ports. As an example, the most famous (and still existing!) Royal Navy ship of the line is HMS Victory, launched in 1765 and thus 40 years old at Trafalger. Its no wonder that an ambitious frigate captain would rather fancy his chances in a relatively new captured French 74!
  19. Just so long as they all escape before 16th February! (Chinese New Year...)
  20. Cellular foam is also a nuisance. Although it IS rather elderly, I've a Russian Zenith UPA-5 photo enlarger that comes packed in a handy suitcase (which forms the baseboard), the enlarger is cradled within the case in beds of cellular foam. This is now a gooey, sticky, unpleasant mess... I blame the plasticisers - inherently unstable substances..... I'm assuming this is the first design iteration of the Electric Chair? At one point in my life I worked on software for designing 16th edition IEE Wiring Regs compliant schemes. It gave me a headache....... Oh well..... I'm sure I've mentioned the mains-powered trainset illustrated in the Arthur Mees Childrens Encyclopedia before now.... They're playing with the train in the nursery, the nursery maid is ironing clothes Everything is powered from a festoon socket hanging from a light socket. There's also a bulb up there.......
  21. According to this ( https://www.toms-electrical-services.co.uk/green-goo-wiring ), green goo is mainly associated with wiring installed in the late60s/early 70s so perhaps the house was due a rewire anyway. However, having to rewire after redecorating is distressing anyhow. I'd never heard of sticky wires/green goo so its probably a wakeup call for anyone who's house was last rewired before the late 80s!
