  1. Its all down to the spread of the holes to get the harmonics. The Cornett is short enough to have almost recorder sized fingering, while the tenor of the family is more sinuous, resulting in its name, the Lysard, to get the holes within reach. The Serpent takes things to its illogical conclusion. I've never tried to play one myself, but I think its easier to handle sitting down.

Perhaps the descriptive titles are now AI generated too...
  3. But the tune was ok, despite being the renaissance equivalent of Pachelbels Canon...
  4. The first 10 seconds of that was enough too!

Why 1950? I understand that they would have been in use by BR(W), but if they're stamped GWR then they're pre-nationalisation... Anyhow, I don't need a GWR telegraph insulator, I already have a GPO telephone insulator. At normal viewing distance, they look identical!
  6. Very odd! A consort of viols (the one being held awkwardly at the shoulder looks like a treble)** A Cornett and a Serpent (both of the same family!)* And bringing up the rear, a bass recorder. Why everyone has to play standing is anyones guess... * Wooden "trumpets" with fingerholes... ** Two listed as Vihuela de arco, which are the prototype of the Viol family and can also be played seated, on the knee.
  7. Not a groan, just a sigh... Sounds like an abandoned Christmas Cracker joke!
  8. What does she prefer. A microwave or a pressure cooker?
  9. I've found that if I watch a match, the team I am most sympathetic towards always loses. It could be that I have an innate ability to detect the rubbish teams...
  10. Do neoprene knee supports come with an owners manual too?
  11. Other retailers may well stock the same sort of stuff that Hattons did, but their websites are nowhere near as logically laid out and easy to navigate as the Hattons website. It made it so easy to find and buy what you wanted.

At least we know where to go and complain. If we could be bothered! And were near Tavistock... rumbles on and on and on and...
  13. The photo at the head of the article looks more like a Noch "Beach Scene" catalogue illustration!

Even frequent visitors can't keep up, I should know... The vendor should also mention that it's three-rail. And are black filler caps supposed to be L@@K RARE!!! ? @Michael Hodgson Not unless Binns Road has been migrated into Liverpool Chinatown...

There's a switch inside the loco body of the smoke generator fitted variants to enable/disable the generator. I've a DCC/smoke gen loco that I got when one of the retailers had them on special offer a couple of months ago. I'll be switching the smoke off when I put it into service!
  16. Aromatics outgassing from the real coal affecting the track? (just a guess!) Provided its not affecting running tracks, you may as well leave it alone and call it "natural weathering". As its in one place all the time, the coal will have more effect than real coal in loco bunkers.
  17. Crumbs! The character in black is the stereotypical exhibition attendee... I'll appreciate any model layout, especially if the person who created it is telling me a story. "Foreign" layouts are interesting because they tell a slightly different story to the familiar British one, even the cliches are different enough to be amusing.
  18. As an alternative to the extra large beach balls?
  19. A fact you have to accept/ignore if you're an Apple user.
  20. Happy New Dragon! I'd better put some tinsel on my bronze Chinese Dragon! (its about 3ft long and stands in front of the fireplace in my lounge) So as well as supply chain disruption in the Red Sea, all of China is now on holiday/changing factories/etc too....
  21. I feel sorry for the goods shed.
  22. The initial hearing concluded without resolution, but the affair doesn't appear to have been settled. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/formula1/68257388 I expect a large quantity of fudge is being prepared.
  23. Spray him a bronze colour, and mount him on a plinth in front of the clubhouse...
  24. Skoda uses VAG keyfobs. Mine has a flip out key and is powered by a CR2032 flat battery, which should be replaced now and then. The real problem is mechanical degradation of the "buttons" and VAG charge a pretty penny for replacement key units...
