  1. I've now found when this affliction started thanks to this! What a great nostalgia source.

Feb 88 was the first issue I ever bought as a greasy spotty eighty's teen. Houghton an O gauge LNER BLT was the railway of the month, and I was much taken with the junior modeller 6x4 roundy roundy I seem to remember.

The plethora of West Highland articles (including Kyle of Tongue) round the turn of the 80s/90s explains a lot an all:D..

  2. We partake of a hobby that you can splash out half a grand on a RTR loco if you so desire. An average is probably £150 for a OO loco. And yet the vitriol and miserly b#£@hing for a few quid a month towards the running of a resource (and it is) we all enjoy is almost comedic( probably not for some).

The last 24hrs has demonstrated very well what it takes to keep the old girl in steam, I'm happy to bung a few quid towards that, if I wasn't I'd be patient and let the ads settle down happy to get in for nowt.

  3. What is point control circuit like? Where is the power supply from, is there a CDU? Is it a switch for each or is it probe and stud? What is each solenoid doing when it makes a noise, is it a case of not enough power to throw the solenoid? Given every point is affected I'd start by looking at point of supply and any common return.

Sorry, hard to give useful advice without it in front of you. let us know how you get along, good luck.

@slow8dirty As another former matelot this might interest you.  Totally off-topic, but something I built about 15 years ago.  She's 1:72 scale.

Very nice, I've been tempted by the Revell Flower kits but not bit yet. Back on track!

  5. Tracklaying complete! Family holidays and an hour here an hour there sessions in the garage meant it took a couple weeks to do the final two sidings, but after tidying things up I'm quite happy with how everything "sits".

Point motors and bus to fit, then control panel to do. After that I can return to the top of the boards and start on the fun stuff.

Well, after the ballasting. I'm well happy to be at this stage after so many years of prevarication but I am just starting to realise how much there is to do. Lots of kit building and scenic treatment, with some testing thrown in:senile:

Smoke me a kipper for breakfast, I'll see you all if/when I come out from underneath the boards.

Glad you had a great time. I have been a volunteer on the WSR for many many years and have seen it through all sorts of issues. They are to be convgratulated on making a virtue out of a problem with the heritage busses. Whilst we would all prefer to stay on the train, the busses have gone down very well indeed. The open top ride has been very popular.

Yes 9351 used to be 5193. All work done at Minehead. A true GWR "might have been". A very useful engine indeed. I can't remember now where the tender came from.

We have just returned from a day out on our local line after far too long away and can only echo bucoops' experience of the line. Was dubious at first about the bus issue, but the way the day is operated and ticketed it actually makes a fun addition to the day (And I hate busses:D)

And for those not of a Western persuasion the TSO we returned on apparently is an ex west highland vehicle, so I count that as layout research. Well done to all on the line.

  7. Coal in a small space? Mmm, have a look at the model railroader Virginian project layout. Ok it's not going to fit in your planned space but it has to appeal due to it's quart in a pint pot factor. 4'x8', 2 coal mines, several industry spots, a small yard, and managed not look like a trainset. A very American approach to presenting a model though if you understand my meaning.
