  1. I have been poring over various diesel photo books and was surprised how rare that the class 21/29s were at Edinburgh, so far I have only seen one photo of a class 29 at St.Margarets on a football extra, the photographer must have thought that it was his lucky day as the next train was a Freightliner hauled by a class 50! - Both photos are on the RailScot site https://www.railscot.co.uk/img/27/804/ and https://www.railscot.co.uk/img/37/779/ Jim

  3. OK it is stretching it a bit - but if we allow 1990 into scope - I posted a series of five videos taken on one day at Mossend in 1990 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJ47SReq68g https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bi-JOlzPyfI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NHMdk992RQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSb7uihfSDQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KcoEMkEJLY4 Jim
  4. Story I was told was that his son was using it and he had been up at Trumps other Scottish golf course at Menie Estate near Aberdeen and had flown down from Dyce the day before
  5. Especially the Brazilian Armed Forces.
  6. I found these while looking for something completely different - (as you do) These were taken with an old 2mb digital camera at Summerlee many years ago. They are of the 311 but I don't thing there were many differences to the underframe and bogies Hope these are of interest Jim
  7. I have been pressing on with the bridge abutment and managed to get the majority of the work finished tonight, some painting and fine detailing still to do but it is structurally complete. Couple of views of the structure after applying the brick paper... The black painted wood will be hidden by the backscene so no covering is required A view of the underside, showing the brick lining of the top of the arch. The abutment put in place. Unfortunately the "lean" has not gone away and it looks as though it cannot be fixed, so in the absence of the solution I will do what most modellers do and CREATE A BACK STORY" = It is supposed to lean!! the abutment was noticed to be failing some years ago and all passenger services over the bridge were stopped (historical provenance here - the line into the real Allenshaw was severed due to the deterioration of the Clyde Viaduct). So the bridge has been left in place as the headshunt for the foundry with small tank engines only allowed on the bridge at slow speed. I am going to add some reinforcing rails and plates (as per Batty Moss viaduct) to help with the story The other abutment will be MUCH easier to make, as it is a simple support with no big structural complexity. Cheers Jim
  8. Possibly the furthest north 3rd Rail EMU photographs?? Ex Manchester Bury class 504 units stabled in Mossend Yard en-route to MC metals at Springburn for scrapping. Jim

  10. I don't see the connection between the tablet catcher recess and the doors, as can clearly be seen in the photo of the 27 linked to above the tablet catcher recess was below the cab windows, hence those locomotives that had tablet recesses had cab windows that slid horizontally, rather than dropped down. The doors would have been the same irrespective if tablet catcher recesses were cut or not. Jim
  11. Don't know if this shot is of any interest, I had been for an interview at GEC Traction and was at Trafford Park Station waiting for a train back to Manchester City Centre (to head on a trip to Barry Scrapyard). The picture was taken looking north from the station, the date was 18th March 1981 If you look carefully you will see what I later found out were two class 84 locomotives in the GEC Traction works yard, never found out why they were there though. 13. I really enjoy watching these Police Camera programmes, but it makes my blood boil after watching all the effort that goes into catching these offenders to see the ridiculously lenient punishment these morons receive. The word deterrent might as well be deleted from the English Dictionary. Jim
  14. The standard 4 on another 1 coach train - GWR style this time! Jim
  15. With the on-going unusually dry and hot weather looking like it will continue into August, wouldn't it be ironic if Network Rail marks the 50th anniversary of the end of steam with another nationwide steam ban! Jim
  16. At the tender age of 5, I was bought a Hornby Dublo R1 0-6-0T 31337 and two tinplate suburban coaches for my birthday, this ran on HD set track laid on a green painted sheet of chipboard , Xmas added a plain green Hornby Dublo Deltic and several wagons which was the complete layout for a few years until a house move caused the board to be dismantled. When I was 12 I started again, that lot was brought out of storage and joined by a Tri-ang Hornby M7 tank, a Jinty and a Dock Authority diesel shunter plus two Trix coaches and five Triang Hornby Coaches. Track eventually became a mix of the HD from the original board, plus some Series 3, Super 4 Triang and Peco Streamline. It was a mix of incompatible track and couplings plus a lack of space in my parents house that shaded my enthusiasm, and a teenage desire to have an electric guitar and amplifier resulted in the whole lot being packed up and sold off! Then when I married and had a home of my own the guitar was sold off, and Gateside and Northbridge Mk1 was born with a Lima DMU, Class 09, Hornby Class 25 and three coaches, apart from the 09 all are still running today. 17. Martyn - I attempted a history of the class 303s a while back - the website was lost to a hacking attack but there is a version on the wayback machine https://web.archive.org/web/20091125193627/http://www.jhowie.force9.co.uk:80/303tributepage1.htm Also the original book published by BR for the introduction is available here http://www.railwaysarchive.co.uk/documents/BRS_Glasgow1960.pdf This document - if you scroll down to the bottom, has a rudimentary drawing with some info on dimensions http://www.railwaysarchive.co.uk/documents/MoT_EMUFailures1962.pdf Jim
  18. Which reminds me of the old joke.. Little Jimmy is not the brightest mind in the class, and every Friday afternoon the teacher holds a quiz, if the pupil answer the question correctly they are allowed to go home early - Jimmy always end up staying to the end. As a desperate act, he hatches a cunning plan! He finds two ping-pong balls, paints them black and sticks them in his pocket. Once the teacher starts the quiz he quietly takes them out and rolls them down the aisle between he desks. The teacher spots this and demands "Right - who is the comedian with the black balls???" - Jimmy shoots his arm up - "Miss - it's Sammy Davis Junior - can I go home now? Jim

  20. If you are throwing out an old bed - check what it is made from, I salvaged a big sheet of about 5mm thick pasteboard that was stapled to the underside of the frame, excellent for scratchbuilding structures, there is also the usual strips of timber etc. (Just watch those heavy duty staples - they are sharp!)
