  1. That water and seaweed looks bloody horrible - just as it should!!! Terrific modelling. Jim
  2. During the 1960s in Scotland, BR created the Glasgow Parcels Depot in Salkeld Street, according to the carriage working books of the day, any train heading towards Glasgow Buchanan Street or Queen Street that had any parcels vans in the consist had them removed at Stirling or Perth, these were then combined to form a parcels train that would run via Coatbridge and Rutherglen to Shields Junction for reversal into the depot, The 1964 Carriage working book is fascinating and there are BGs being transferred from one service to another at almost every major station. The last real marshalling of any mail working was the West Coast Postal at Carstairs, where four vans were added from Aberdeen and a single BG added from Edinburgh, often hauled by a class 87, how is this for an over powered parcels service!! Jim
  3. Ten Commandments plaster kit of a medium LNER pattern hut at Northbridge, Next: an observation car! Jim
  4. Used to get that bus to my work, service 42, Airdrie to Ayr!! (I only went as far as Mossend). Remarkably, for a service that was fairly long distance it kept very good time. Here is one I took a picture of in Edinburgh a couple of weeks ago Jim
  5. Crewe in the good old days, every platform end thronging with spotters, it was an open day at the works that day! Next: A double header with two different classes of diesels Jim

  8. Ohh please Airdrie win the playoff spot, the thought of going to Gayfield on a winter Saturday with the wind whipping in from the North Sea again is too much to bear, mind you I haven't been in Tutties Neuk for a long time!! Jim
  9. This is Campbells Yard in Airdrie, around 206 steam locomotives and a few diesels met their end here. A train of 31 x 12T loaded mineral wagons loaded with scrap left the yard almost daily taking the metal to Clydesdale Steelworks. I never witnessed the operation at work but in such a cramped yard it seems impossible that this was achieved, one locomotive, 42264 is on record as having arrived at the yard at 10:00am on the 16th August 1966 and was completely cut by 4:15pm!! https://flic.kr/p/e1mNMg Jim
  10. TBH the "old" Skodas were not common in Scotland, there were however loads of Ladas at one time, dirt cheap and awful, then they all disappeared in the 1990s as enterprising Russian trawlermen bought them to be stripped for spare parts or to be sold to Russian buyers. They appreciated the export cars built to better specification than the local versions! JIm

  14. I was up in Edinburgh for a couple of days break and we booked a deal with Jury's Inn. What a perfect view from the room window. Tip for booking, ask for rooms 223, 224 or any of the equivalents on the upper floors. Thought we could use this as the start of a thread sharing similar hotels with particular rooms with a railway view. I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of locomotives and units that still work into Waverley, the wife wasn't too pleased with the number of photographs I took! Jim
