  10. I passed through the station hauled by a class 60 on Saturday 25 April 1992. That was a great event, Longsight Open Day plus all that haulage, bagged the 60, 2 x 20s and a class 31 and I wasn't really trying!

  13. The thing is it is not a tax - it is a minimum price that retailers can charge, so all the additional profit will go straight to the retailer!
  14. Here is some useless information for you. Wee Nicola and her wonderful Scottish Government are cock a hoop that they have beaten the courts and the Scotch Whisky Industry to introduce their flagship minimum unit cost for alcahol, now set at 50p and due to be introduced in May. There is however a major flaw in their policy... 1) If you ask the police and social workers what brand of alcoholic beverage is most associated with anti social behavior they will almost certainly tell you that it is the famous Buckfast Tonic Wine, sold in vast quantities to wee Neds throughout Scotland, so prevalent that it has become a national joke (as highlighted by Ian). 2) Buckfast Tonic Wine is 15% alcohol in the 750 ml green-bottled UK version, and 14.8% in the brown-bottled Republic of Ireland version, which equates to roughly 11.25 UK units of alcohol. 3) Buckfast Tonic Wine currently sells for between £7 and £8 4) For a beverage at 11.25 units of alcohol the minimum price will be £5.63 - see the flaw here, the worst offender in the lets get hammered and cause as much grief as we can category will not be affected in the least. Someone has not thought this through! Jim

  18. Having a lot of time on my hands a while back, I carried out an exercise to extract the data for Scottish Station Closures from "Register of Closed Passenger Stations & Goods Depots," by C.R. Clinker and create an Excel Spreadsheet. This provided my with a statistical spreadsheet with closure dates of ever station in Scotland and resulted in some extremely interesting data which to a certain extent removes some of the stigma from Beeching. True the years 1964 and 1965 following the report saw the largest number of Scottish station closures ever (104 and 139) and the total number closed by the end of that decade was 390. However in the 16 years from Nationalization to 1964 BR closed 381 Scottish stations with a peak of 104 in 1951, indeed the LMS and LNER closed 137 Scottish Stations between 1932 and 1948 so in percentage terms Beeching was responsible for only 42% of all closures. 19. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway were strongly against the southern extension of the line from Pickering, When this was last mooted in 2012 Philip Benham, general manager of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, stated that the heritage railway would be put at “serious risk” if a link was to be reinstated, as the line would need to be upgraded and major changes would need be needed to the way the railway is currently operated to such an extent that the lines viability as a major tourist attraction could be put at serious risk. 21. Which is one point that really worries me about current and potential future railway regeneration, and that is the projects are conceived as individual tailored schemes that do not contribute as links in a national network. For example crossrail and other London schemes will never be able to carry freight, even at quieter times overnight, the Borders rail link has been built with single track sections that were tailored to the planned operating pattern, and cannot be expanded to cope with an increased or extended service without considerable expense, the Paisley Canal line was electrified with such tight clearances that only certain units can be used and the power has to be switched off if a CCE train is to go down the line, HS2 will probable be totally restricted to those trains designed for that line, as is HS1. If you are planning a new line it should be designed with the potential to carry any and all traffic with the capability of being expanded at the least possible additional cost in the future. We need a national network, not a patchwork of disparate routes and branches Jim Jim
