  2. D8028-34 were delivered new to Kittybrewster and Inverness (28 and 29 had a brief spell at Leith Central) and worked over many lines in the north east where the tablet catcher would have been useful, D8070-8116 were delivered new to Eastfied, D8117 - 8127 to Polmadie, and would not have worked over many lines where a tablet was used. Jim
  3. The common phrase of the scrap metal from steam locomotives being turned to razor blades or baked bean cans cannot be said of the locomotives that were scrapped at the yards of Airdrie and Coatbridge. These yards fed the open hearth (and later electric arc) furnaces at the Stewarts and Lloyds (later BSC) Clydesdale works, and the entire output of those furnaces was used to make high quality seamless steel tubes the majority of which went to the oil and gas industry. Jim

  6. Just been watching a documentary about the life and work of Buster Keaton on Sky Arts, worth watching! The documentary featured scenes from Busters 1964 travelogue for the Canadian National Film Board, but someone has been playing fast a wild with the external railway shots, I spotted Swindon Works, Leeds Central, Dumbarton Rock, Edinburgh and a Blue Pullman! Great story about a wonderful man - with added trains - Buster would have approved!! Jim

  10. 70013 wouldn't have needed to reverse, it was common back then for Fylde Coast trains for the northern WCML to run through Preston to Farrington Junction, over the WCML to Lostock Hall Jn, Preston Junction and back into Preston on the East Lancs Side so it would be right way round for the line to Carlisle. Jim

  16. No Idea Phil, but I know that they would still have a few miles to go before they would be cut up. As I mentioned Campbells was a very small yard with only one siding to receive the locos and stable the empty wagons that took the scrap away to the steelworks (usually Clydesdale Works), the common practice would be for the locomotive hauling the empties back from the works at Mossend would stop at Whifflet and pick up one or two locos, they would then be behind the train loco (and brakevan) to Coatbridge Sunnyside, where the train would reverse so the scrap locos would be at the back of the train up to Clarkston where the train would reverse again before heading for the yard, which was on the down side of the line. My parents house overlooked the embankment at Coatdyke and I always watched the empties until the full train passed so that I could see what was at the back. Jim
  17. Can't think of a loop on a climb, but there was Greskine Refuge Siding on the Climb to Beattock. Jim
