Lidl oil and grease sprays
davefrk replied to sjp23480's topic in Modelling Questions, Help and Tips
Me too, keep these things for the garage, you just don't know what they do to our sort of plastic, 3in1 and WD oils have solvent in and can rot plastic over time. -
Sliding cab windows on 'Austerity' 2-8-0 locos?
davefrk replied to Trev52A's topic in UK Prototype Questions
The WDs weren't built with sliding glass windows, they were fitted when they entered normal service after the war so the drawings won't show anything. The 200 locos the LNER bought first went through the workshops and received various upgrades like sliding windows, fibreglass matting insulation on the boiler where it had been just an airspace and possibly cab doors, though I can't be sure of that. As the other railways got hold of the WDs they were also upgraded though slowly. How can one be sure a loco has the sliding windows? Just look for the line of five bigger bolts below the window opening, they hold the bottom runner for the sliding window. On a 2-8-0 (still to have the glazing fitted. And on the 2-10-0 I have built quite a number of WDs and did some research on the loco number the customer requested and I haven't found a loco later than the early fifties which didn't have sliding windows apart from ones still in army service. Yes the windows could be stuck open but if the bolts were there they had the glass windows. Dave. -

Gordon Bennett! Just because we live within smell shot of the Tunnocks factory doesn't mean we live on Caramel Wafers, although thinking about it I did have one at lunchtime. Anyway, much more importantly - Lanarkshire Models are temporarily suspending operations from now due to unexpectedly having to renegotiate a hugely inflated Business insurance renewal quote. The broker left it till the last minute to see if we might submit and payup, we'll see next week. Dave. 🤬- 816 replies

Millholme kits, good in their day but In my experience the later castings were very poor and lumpy due to the moulds being worn. I got one of the first Ivatt 4MTs kits and it was okay but I built a few later releases and as I say the castings needed a lot of work. Here is one built in P4 for a customer, scratch chassis, Mashima motor, Ultrascale wheels and a lot of work done on the castings. This loco was later presumed stolen when house renovations were going on so if you see it let me know and I'll tell the owner. Dave.

I use Humbrol No 1 grey primer for small areas like this, it works well in this situation, thinned down a touch as well. Dave. -
That is correct, all personal details are through PayPal which is secure whether as a guest or account holder. Lanarkshire website is a simple website and does not ask for any details to be entered. Only a couple of people have had bother in the past. Cheers, Dave@LMS

OO vs EM vs P4 comparison photo
davefrk replied to Qweqwe's topic in Modelling Questions, Help and Tips
Well thanks very much John, track is one of my interests so I had to make an effort or people might talk. 🤣 I was looking at your video on Scalefour forum earlier, nice to see stuff running and running well. Cheers Dave. -
OO vs EM vs P4 comparison photo

Any code 75 track can look good once painted and ballasted, my Layout is EM and having dabbled with P4 and decided on the layout I wanted EM was the best option for me. Yes some will notice the checkrails, some will notice the wider gauge but for me it's the running qualities. Boards split for ballasting. Dave.- 201 replies

Regularity of track sleepers and their spacing circa 1950-1960
davefrk replied to n9's topic in UK Prototype Questions
Yes modelled on Wharfeside in EM and based on the wartime track that is still on the Wharfedale line though the bullhead rail is welded complete with the fishplate holes still visible. C& L dowmac sleepers with the name scrapped off, C&L 2 bolt chairs and EMGS bullhead rail. Dave. -

Can't compete with the Riechstag but here's a wee goods shed. Still to do the platform and fit the inner walls when the wondows are done. Dave. -
The squeezy oilers do split if you squeeze too hard, you need to gently squeeze them lightly and the oil will come out slowly then release the squeeze and move to the next bearing... simples! Dave F.

Signal box in position on the layout though the groundwork is still to be done before final fixing. Really must touch in the white where the blue has gone over. I'm planning on a couple of painters with ladders just to get the message across that the NE region was repainting everything in their house style at this time. Dave.

Dating, women and the 'hobby'...
davefrk replied to OnTheBranchline's topic in Modelling musings & miscellany
My beloved didn't bat an eyelid when she found out about the trains as she loved to play with her wee brothers H/D trainset when she was wee plus she was proud of her granddad who worked his way up to a driver starting with the North British Railway in 1918 and finished driving the Glasgow Blue trains. And, just yesterday we were at the club working on my layout, me cutting polystyrene for scenery and her planting a dry stane wall, piece by piece I might add. I'm so lucky... Dave.- 819 replies
