And behind the door today:  WIN your very own Santa's Express Christmas Train Set in time for Christmas!  Worth £54.99!

I quote some of the curious body text...  "Inject a bit of Hornby magic into Christmas with the special Santa's Express Train Set, worth £54.99 - perfect for both beginners and seasoned modellers, or as a spectacular Christmas decoration around the base of your Christmas tree!"

I suspect the only "seasoned modellers" enthused with a Santa's Express will be well seasoned with Xmas Cheer!!!

Disclaimer:  I got one for last Christmas considerably cheaper and that had an oval of usable 3rd radius track. I had considerable fun setting up a control system using an Arduino, a L298N motor controller, reed switches and a magnet under the Reindeer van...

Yes I know we "well seasoned" conoisseurs may turn our collective nose up at this but Hornby does have to cater for all tastes and ages. Jingle tills ! :jester:

Yes well....

My Santa Express loco might be doing its circuits hauling a train of insulated vans this year.  Fresh venison! Mmmmmmmmmmmm!!!

And if the Advent Calendar shifts a lot of leftover stuff from concessions that the regular dealers wouldn't really want to touch with a barge pole surely that can only be a good thing.

Last year we bought two decent tombola prizes for the club show, guaranteeing the club made a decent profit on the tombola.  Raffle prizes this year?  Who knows?

Was looking at the Hornby Christmas set in Hawkins bazaar for £39.95, couldn't think of a good reason to get one, maybe they will be reduced after Christmas!! Was thinking of a circular 'under Christmas tree' test track type thing..

Day 3, a bit of filler.

The Hornby Christmas Survival Guide.  For those who don't read the information that came packed with the train set.

Was slightly surprised to see them recommending meths  for cleaning track etc with. Also whilst they usefully state WD40  nor 3 in 1 is to be used they fail to say what oil to use.

Sounds a reasonable price if you hanker for one.

I doubt it will go much lower, a certain large retailer has been selling a similarly minimal trainset (R1151, Caledonian Belle) for £35 since the Big Hornby Sell Off began and they still have "more than 10 in stock".

Hmmmm.....

I use IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol, not India Pale Ale, you doofus!) for track cleaning though if we're sticking stuff available in the "normal" household, a cheap vodka also does the trick.  As for lubrication, at least they're warning people off the ineffective/plastic-eating substances usually found in the domestic environment.

Day 4:

R3285TTS Gadwall (LNER Blue) for £66.

You know you want one!

Seeing as the retail price of a TTS decoder set is £40, that's a Railroad A4 for only £26......

£1.01 cheaper at kernow models, but you do have to pay £4 uk post, unless you can call in!!

Just a query before I gad off and buy one .... I am a mere mortal who knows nothing of the dark side. I am analogue born and bred.

Does TTS work on analogue and how does it differ to proper digital?

I believe not.It is a budget form. Strangely enough, the full fat Hornby sound will work on analogue, though with degraded results.

TTS is standard DCC control with a simplified sound system.  In all respects it is "proper digital" as far as digital control is concerned.  The difference is that while the loco will run like any other DCC loco on an analogue/DC system, it will not produce sound, unlike some more expensive DCC sound systems which will produce at least the basic locomotive sound on analogue/DC.

Of course, the more expensive sound systems are at least two or three times as expensive as TTS is!

£66 is a reasonable price for a DCC ready Railroad Pacific but in this case you're actually getting a DCC fitted loco with added sound.

Thus if you really want sound on DC be prepared to pay a lot more than £66.There is a garter blue full fat version on ebay now for £179.95 b.i.n.

Of course, you could always buy the loco, take the chip and speed out and sell them on if you don't want to go digital. That makes the loco even cheaper! Bear in mind though, the TTS chips have been announced as a seperate item to come from Hornby, retailing at £40 so don't expect to get more than that. Still not bad though!

Cheers
