London Transport Museum announces new London Underground S Stock train models London Transport Museum has announced a new motorised 1:76 (OO) scale S Stock model London Underground train made exclusively for the Museum by Bachmann Europe plc. The motorised set, comprising four cars, including two driving cars, will be available in September 2015 and can be pre-ordered from Saturday 30 May 2015. The first 250 customers to pre-order will receive a special S Stock certificate. This is the first time a highly detailed ‘ready to run’ London Underground model train has been produced and additional un-motorised individual cars can be purchased to authentically complete either S7 or S8 train formations. The models are based on the S Stock serving the Metropolitan line on the Underground network and shows Aldgate as the destination. The livery is based on the London Underground approved livery specification as of September 2014. This event is exclusive to online pre-order customers only and along with being part of this private trip, customers will also collect their orders prior to travelling on the train. Online pre-order customers that are unable to, or decline to attend the Moorgate event will have their orders dispatched from Tuesday 29th September. The S Stock model • Each driving car is motorised with an advance low-line system to make them invisible internally. The two motorised cars will be sufficient to haul a full S8 train on a model railway layout. • Proceeds from the sales of the S Stock model go towards supporting London Transport Museum’s work as a charity to help preserve, display and promote heritage vehicles and its world class collection of 20th century graphic art. The S Stock on London Underground • London Underground is replacing all sub surface trains on the Metropolitan, Circle, Hammersmith & City and District lines with the new S Stock trains. Designed and built by Bombardier at their factory in Derby, the trains feature the latest technology with air conditioning and ‘walk through’ carriages, and are designed for maximum passenger capacity and comfort. • The new trains have already replaced the 1960/62 A Stock on the Metropolitan line, the 1969/77 C Stock on the Circle line, Hammersmith & City line, and the Edgware Road to Wimbledon branch of the District line, and are now replacing the 1980 D Stock trains on the rest of the District line. • There are two types of S Stock train. The S8 car version is used exclusively on the Metropolitan line and features more seats for the line’s longer distance services; the S7 car version is used for all other sub surface lines – which has fewer seats arranged longitudinally. • S Stock trains first appeared in London in 2009 when the first pre-production S8 Stock train was delivered to Neasden Depot and began testing on the Metropolitan line in December. S8 Stock trains entered passenger service on the Metropolitan line in July 2010. By mid-2012 all trains in service on the Metropolitan line were S8 Stock. • The first S7 Stock train arrived in London in June 2012 and began passenger service on the Hammersmith & City line between Hammersmith and Moorgate a month later. S7 trains now operate on all Hammersmith & City and Circle line services. S7 trains are now entering service on the District line and all are expected to be in service by 2016. The S Stock has been delivered from Bombardier's Litchurch Lane works in Derby, the S Stock has been delivered by rail frequently topped and tailed by pairs of Class 20s and barrier wagons and will make for an exciting addition to contemporary mainline layouts in addition to any modern underground layout. Fenman
... What is of especial interest is the discreet drive unit. Completely agree with this: one of the things that puts me off MUs is the sight of a big toy motor in part of the passenger compartment (even the better models where the motor is wholly contained in the brake compartment are a bit of a visual disappointment). This could be a game-changer. The S stock has been crying out for a model, and it's good to see this. My initial impression is that it's sweet, but it doesn't seem to have the sheer mass of the originals (those big lumpy doors standing very proud of the sides, for example), but I'd guess this is not the final version and, anyway, it's difficult to judge from a few snatches of "arty" video. I look forward to seeing it. Though, of course, this is yet another model that won't be available through model shops and, thus, will hasten what I imagine is the death of more of them... Roy L S
If being Underground stock done "before" is an issue, let's not also forget the Ever Ready battery powered train sets from the 1950s! The S Stock looks fantastic. I was half expecting the doors to open! Roy

RMweb Gold PhilH Posted May 30, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 30, 2015 I'm just wondering how they can supposedly knock this out in four months announcement to delivery instead of the usual four years.....
davidw
For such a niche market. I have to ask why? Edited May 30, 2015 by davidw
Roy L S
Hi Fenman, if these are going to be available in October 2015 I would very much expect that this is the "final" version given October is only four months away! Regards Roy

Andy Y
For such a niech market. I have to ask why? It's an LT Museum product so it's their call and they must feel sufficiently confident to invest in it based on the performance of previous models. It's not just for Underground modellers anyway. 43179
What a great idea , and the real units are great looking and great to travel on. I can see barrier wagons becoming very popular... Jon Edited May 30, 2015 by 43179
RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted May 30, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 30, 2015 Well who'd thought it, let's hope it's a big commercial success for the LT Museum! While it's not my cup of tea it does look rather spiffing and the 'lo-line' drive seems like an idea which could go far - very clever stuff going on there and no doubt in line for further future applications. And interesting too that Bachmann are still doing commissions (not that I thought they had ceased that business anyway). I'm just wondering how they can supposedly knock this out in four months announcement to delivery instead of the usual four years..... But what we don't know is when they started on it. On past performance it looks like their commissions are taking a bit over 2 years to come to fruition although a good deal longer in some cases but I wonder if the log jam is starting to clear a bit? Mark Dickerson
I'm just wondering how they can supposedly knock this out in four months announcement to delivery instead of the usual four years..... I got the impression with LU150 that Something Else from Bachmann was going to be announced in addition to the special edition reliveries, so perhaps it was this. Excellent news and with the Heljan Bo-Bo (presumably Sarah Siddons) something the LT Museum could sell for quite a while.

Bluebell Model Railway
Nice! I did hear about it a while ago but was told to keep quiet, looks nice certainly been in development for must be at least 2 years maybe more. Looks nice not for me was hoping it was the other London underground rumour. still brave by Bachmann / LTM shall be interesting to see how they sell. SRman
As I said in another thread, there have been some very vague rumours for some time that Bachmann were going to produce something LT. Now we know! The models look very interesting, if a little on the dear side. I will be trying to find the funds to perhaps do a five or six car set (the length being dictated by my platform and loop lengths, not the accuracy of the train formation).
woodenhead
Well it opens the door to all sorts of underground units and for modellers of lines radiating out of London that has to a very positive move in many eras. Some nice London Overground stock next perhaps from Bachmann.
BR(S)
As someone with a minor interest in LU and who uses a motorised EFE set on my layout, this is welcome news. Hopefully some more models will follow; this is too modern for me but looks superb.
Frappington Jct
Now all I need is for Bachmann to produce an F5, GER push pull stock and motorise an EFE unit and I can build a multi era model of Epping station!
