Crikey Jeff, that's a big un.

Well, scrubbed up, beard brought under control. Suited and booted and waiting for sister taxi to Bridlington.

Here's hoping for good weather and an uneventful, peaceful day.

All the best Dave, I hope things go O.K.

That's some TOOL you have there Mr Grainger, did you need planning permission to erect such a TOOL in you rear GARDEN?

Yes, very proud of my 8", but it's become a bit limited - so I need an increase in size. Larger size tends to pull in more heavenly bodies, you see!!

Clive, you really made me chuckle! Very military - and not a sausage in sight!

Echoing Andy's comment, all the best for today.

And thanks for the compliment.....  :O  :O

Morning Jeff,

Now I'm really envious - enough said!

Kind regards,

Jock.

Cheers Jock.

I bought this telescope in autumn 1982 and for about 5-6 years it was in regular use. Then I found that I was going in to work and the kids were asking me why I looked tired! And of course they didn't believe it was because I'd been up half the night looking at the stars. Though they did accept that I'd been up half the night playing with my telescope!!!!!

So, intermittent use (!!) over the last few years. I must admit I was surprised - but delighted - to find the optics still fully collimated and the star tests showed very good diffraction discs. Saturn looked great, despite being on the Libra-Scorpius border at an altitude of a mere 15 degrees.

What worries me Andy is that it's just about to get even bigger! God knows what the council will say! I suspect Jeff might have been opening some of those strange 'enlargement' spam emails we get! :nono: :nono: :nono:

Regards

Bill

Best wishes Dave. I hope everything goes smoothly for you!

Just arrived back, only rained for about 5 minutes on the way to the fish & chip emporium for a spot of lunch, but it's not Bridlington without rain.

The service was nice and Mum caught up with her last remaining cousin for a chat, their first in seven years.

Found out my Aunt was railway mad and spent a lot of time at the NRM. Go figure, I wish I'd known before..

Thanks for your thoughts chaps, they are appreciated.

Bill, it just occurred to me that observing near the church - as you plan to do - should guarantee a supply of heavenly bodies!

So have you decided on your purchase then? If and when it arrives, let's see some photos....

Eeeer! I never thought of that Jeff! Especially as the view north looks right over the War Memorial graveyard and I’m not really into the tortured soul thing despite my artistic leanings! Still. Stiff upper lip and all that chaps! As long as one of them isn’t the Second Coming as I think I might have a few debit points in that direction!

I’ve got my heart set on the Celestron NexStar SLT Series 130 so I’m just building up the necessary funds before I make my purchase in a few weeks. The main decision is where from. There’s over a £130 price difference between online or in person (which I prefer) which would mean a trip to Jessop’s in Manchester (If it’s still there!  I haven’t checked yet!). It’s just my luck that there is a shop nearby in Lancaster (Lambert’s) which specialises in telescopes, astronomical and terrestrial, and must be the only place in the UK which doesn’t sell Celestron!

Another thought! If I stand on the ‘bulge’ behind the breakwater at the end of the road, I have a clear view right across the main bathing beaches to the south! YIPPEE! Heavenly body photo’s coming up!

I bought the NexStar 5SE from Amazon. I note they sell the model you want for £342.

For more expensive scopes I'd always deal with a specialist: Telescope House and First Light Optics have been very good over the years (your scope is £379/£349 respectively with them).

I'm sure you know what you're doing!

No activity in any of the S&C threads so far today....

Bill, I've just ordered the new telescope and camera gear/adapters. Telescope will be here on the 23rd June (I could have had it earlier, but I'm away next week) and the camera this Friday. So I may be able to get a pic or two on here before I go to Cumbria.

New Horizons is now only 40 million km from Pluto - just under 34 days to closest approach (it's already been travelling for 3428 days!!)

Hi Jeff!

Looking forwards to that! Which EOS version have you decided on? I think I've been lucky with the adaptor's. When I bought the spotting scope it took three tries before they supplied the correct one, the other two are intended for 2 inch mounts which should be OK!

NewHorizon's is now required reading when I'm online though I'm still playing catch-up. After the fly-past of Pluto I know they intend to continue into the Kuiper Belt but are there any plans after that? For example, following the Voyagers out through the Oort Cloud and beyond?

I had two surprise visitors this morning in the form of Sara and her mum! Apparently the school they both attend (as teacher and pupil), Saint Thomas' is closed for building work (brilliant timing on the part of the Council with the holidays looming!) so they took the opportunity to descend on Grandad! One result of which is I had a bet with Sara and lost, and the forfeit was I had to shave my beard off! Yep! Be warned people! I am now completely naked betwixt nose and neck! The last time she saw my face she was around two-years-old which possibly explains why she now bursts out laughing every time she looks at me! Revenge is imminent however because we're taking her down to the Stone Jetty in the early hours to watch the ISS transit, which, being an adventurous type like her mum (who once dragged me out to watch a lunar eclipse at 3am one morning!) she's quite looking forward to. God help any Klingon's who may be lurking about!

Regards

Bill

Edit: I flew past the wrong planet! OOPS!

Hi Andy!

It crossed my mind after my last post that I'd forgotten to ask the most important question of all! Have you found the Plough yet? Conditions permitting I'll try to grab a photo of it while we're down at the Jetty tonight after midnight. Meanwhile here's a clue: Face east and find Cassiopeia (the big W) then look to your left! The Lunester world awaits with bated breath! Have fun!

Man has walked on the Moon.

We've sent craft that have landed safely on Mars.

We can accelerate particles to a great speed and collide them in the LHC.

But is it possible to open a paper wrapper containing two Shredded Wheat without spilling any crumbs?

Hello Sir

I don’t like having to teach a teacher but sometimes these things have to be done.

Have you tried the following?

You will need some scissors but not her ladyship's bestest dress making ones and a cereal bowl.

Hold the packet so the narrow ends are top and bottom.

Take the scissors and cut along the edge of the top.

Put the scissors down.

Holding the open end upwards manoeuvre the packet over the bowl.

Then invert the packet allowing the contents to fall into the bowl.

Hopefully all the little bits will follow the 2 Shredded Wheat biscuits into the bowl.

Therefore preventing you getting another verbal ear bashing from her ladyship and the kids having a giggle at how clumsy dad is.

A trick I learnt from my father -in-law, a self-taught man in avoiding domestic trouble.

You should try it with Weetabix . . .
