Marcus 37
WOW!! Its busy today for a freight only location but that just shows how times have changed. Now if you had a layout with the sidings filled with that many wagons you'd probably think you'd overstocked just a little. Cracking photo mate. Thanks for posting.
Popular Post Marcus 37
Evening All Apart from giving the fuelling point safety barrier a coat of primer this morning its been a day of having a play for a change. Especially as we have a new arrival at PDW courtsey of my Dad who has kindly loaned it for the foreseeable future. Anyway our new guest is Freightliner 66952 which will be quite at home on a variety of services around PDW. Below is quite a bumper selection of pictures charting ts first workings. First up 66952 approaches PDW, with empty IOA's destined for Peak Dale Quarry, slowing down for the junction signal in the process. With the train at a stand the signal clears for the route towards the quarry reception lines Before drawing onto the reception line, the driver stops and picks up Fred the shunter on the barrow crossing by the station. With Fred safely on board the train slowly crosses over onto the reception line heading towards the run round loop. With the last wagon clear of the signal in rear the train is brought to a stand in the run round loop. Fred then jumps down to detatch 66952 from the train. Having been detatched from the train, the loco then runs up into the head shunt under the bridge clear of the points in order to run round. Running back past the stabled train With the loco stopped clear of the ground signal, the driver has changed cabs ready to proceed back towards the train. 66952 Is called back onto the train by Fred the shunter With the loco recoupled the train heads back towards the quarry Once in the quarry the road has been set towards number two loading road. As the train will be loaded later in the day by the resident shunt loco Fred detatches 66952 from the train. Having drawn down to the end of the yard, Fred pulls the points to enable the loco to run back via the bypass road. 66952 passes along the bypass road dwarfed by the quarry buildings Next job for 66952 is to take a rake of empty wagons from the up storage sidings to Tunstead Quarry. The loco eases up onto a rake of HIA hoppers whilst Fred gets ready to couple up and perform a brake test. With the wagons attatched the train slow draws out of Number one storage siding. With the ground frame opened up the train pulls out onto the main line. Unfortunately progress is curtailed rather rapidly as the train is brought to a stand at the junction signal due to 37672 heading the other way with a rake of loaded POA's With 37672 and its train clear of the junction the signal clears for the route into Tunstead Quarry. ( Yes I know the junction signal is wrong and the taller post should be on the left. The signal is left over from the last layout and will be replaced eventually) Passing through the junction from the up to the down line. Taking the branch towards Tunstead. Having deposited its wagons in the quarry 66952 heads back towards PDW. Having stopped outside the station building the driver waits for the ground signal to clear to proceed back onto the depot. The loco is stopped on the depot clear of the points that lead back to the fuelling point. Proceeding back towards the fuel point. 66952 is attached to the fuelling rig whilst Fred and the driver head off for a well deserved cup of tea. Tea brake over and the boys take the loco back into the yard and attach to an empty rake of PCA cement tanks destined for Earles Sidings. With the signal cleared the train departs the yard. Finally before getting under way the driver drops Fred off at the station. And so 66752 powers away from PDW towards the tunnel with its train for Earles Sidings. Hope I haven't bored you too much but it was certainly a nice little interesting operating session even though just using the one loco. Cheers for now. big T
Hellfire mate! I really liked the run through, hope you had a decent shunter on the other end of the radio for all those start stops! The rake of PCA's look really cool! as does the new quarry building! More photos please ! Trev
Marcus 37
Cheers Trev I really need to get back to doing some modelling. Especially on the quarry side looking at the pictures. Mind you. You have to have a bit of play time. All the best Marcus
Andrew P
Cracking set of pics mate, such clarity, simply stunning, I also love the write up for each pic, it really adds another dimension to the pics and the Layout. I never realised there were so many movements for a single Loco up there. Thanks and YES, more pics and stories please.
Marcus 37
Cheers Andy. Glad you liked them. There is quite a few light engine moves during the day between the depot, Tunstead and Doveholes. Years ago there was always a trip engine based there during the day which was used for either banking, shunting or draw back moves. it was quite often a 37/0. I remember being up there in the early nineties watching 37108 pottering around all day. I'll have to scan the photo's and post them up on here. pharrc20
Nice run through Marcus. I was up at Peak the other week on a Monday and it is quite apparant how they have had to adapt the operation of bringing loaded trains out of Dove Holes and into the long siding now that the loop behind next to the sloping hillside is no longer available. The track has been truncated just beyond the point and it seems to be partly ballasted over then the track lifted. I haven't seen the Great Rocks end of the loop for quite a while so not sure what they have done with the other point. What I do know is that once loaded trains are drawn down from Dove Holes quarry and the wagons are parked in the long siding, the loco now has to be released via the point connecting back to the Down Main (towards Buxton) and then reverses and travels light engine back along the DM towards Peak Forest South box effectively wrong line. It seems to be standard practise now still signalled under PFS box then the loco runs back onto the front either by going back onto the quarry line then reverse behind the dolly or across onto the Up Main to reverse behind the dolly outside PFS box then back onto long siding. Empties still do the time honoured reversal back along the UM and back into the quarry line and then sidings as set by the ground shunter. It is fun watching and hearing a 66 struggle pushing its rake of hoppers back when a 60 does it with such ease! Cheers Paul
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted September 25, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 25, 2016 Great set of photos mate, really enjoyed the commentary. I'm very envious of your rake of PCAs, there's some money's worth there!! 66752 is far too clean though... Al.

Marcus 37
Thanks for the comments chaps. As for the 66, Unfortunately she's not mine to weather. Dad might not be too happy if it goes back looking looking decidedly dilapidated. Also my weathering Guru is rather busy erecting a shed at the moment. Cheers Paul Hi Paul I'm up in the Peak half term week so will be interesting to see what they've done up there as I intend on having a day in PF. Quite agree about the 60 over the 66. Phenomenal loco. It's a pity GB don't go up there anymore as there would have been a good chance of seeing the 59 up there. We're using it out of Bardon Hill at the moment. rob D2
Great pictures Marcus. As much as I love my planks you can't beat full length prototypical trains. If you go up to PF is there some special handshake that gets you in for a cup of PG tips ??! Or are they less frindly to fellow drivers ?
Marcus 37
Hi Rob The drivers are a friendly bunch at Peak Forest from the ones I've met on my travels. Mind you most Derbyshire folk are very friendly. I know our guys who went up there route learning when we had the Tunstead work were made to feel welcome enough. Made me several cups of tea in the past. Either at Moira when I've been on the 20's or whilst waiting for a taxi at Bardon. He's getting well into his N Gauge as he showed me the pictures of his layout the last time I was up Bardon box.

pharrc20
Yep it is worth a day up in the Peak even better if in a car as you can nip over to Earles Sdgs if quiet time at PF. A shame no more GB through PF now. Cheers Paul

Tried to find them last time and ended up a single track road and nearly took out by a Travis Perkins lorry. Found an over bridge but the sidings were still some distance away. You never know me may get back to Tunstead one day. We're doing all the stuff out of Arcrow and Rylstone at the moment. Tarmac seems to like keep all the FOCs in work which is quite commendable really in this day and age. Cheers Marcus
Iron Horse
Hi Marcus, this is the best I've ever found for Earle's, from the village of Hope and up those steps.
Andrew P
There's also one near the Signal Box like that, just by the Rail Over Bridge, unless that's the same one, although the one I'm thinking of had the steps / Car Parking for Staff to the left of the road and at the Sheffield end of the Sidings.
