Is the pic of 4 locos at westerleigh oil terminal taken from a public road? it looks a great place for pic, your lucky to get 4 there, esp 2 60s, good stuff :icon_clap:

Looking at where you're stood & the lack of proper fencing i'm guessing that's not a public road?

They're going back a darn sight better than when they came down, they now mostly work! You also get the pink handrails for free...

The road is the access road for the oil terminal. The crossing where the 59 is sat waiting to access the yard allows a puclic footpath across the line and into the field to the east. There is a gravel car park next to this, and this is where the railfans (and local van drivers having lunch) tend to park. As you can see, there were a couple more photographers there yesterday - there's usually a few if something interesting is happening. As you can see, the foot crossing in the village gives a good shot too

It's been a while since I've updated this. Last week saw silver 67029 put onto the Cardiff - Paingtons, plus the last fortnight or so has seen the return of 60s onto the Robeston trains. So, in the order they were taken...

The welcome return of a tug to the Robeston - Westerleigh Murco circuit. 60096 lifts the train of empties up the gradient near the junction in Yate as 6B47 Westerleigh to Robeston 15/4/10

Today's hire-in to First Great Western from South West Trains was 158885, here heading for Westbury at Yate Common 15/4/10

The next week saw 60074 work its way back down to South Wales, taking the Theale Murco train on the Tuesday, before getting back on the Westerleigh on the Wednesday. Come Thursday this was the sight:

Seen for the second time this week, again in beautiful conditions, 60074 'Teenage Spirit' coasts along the Westerleigh branch with 6B13 from Robeston 22/4/10

Before 60074 arrived, another photographer said that 60039 had headed off light engine, and the empty tanks for Lindsey were still at Westerleigh. Just as I was about to head off, 60039 rolls along the Westerleigh branch as 0E41 Newport East Usk Yard to Westerleigh. The loco had been across the Severn for fuel before working 6E41 from Westerleigh to Lindsey. Big thanks to RedVanMan for the details ;-)

With 67029 working the FGW loco hauled, it was worth a trip out to get a picture as it wasn't likely to last. Indeed, it went back to Toton after a single week's use, to be replaced by 67018 in DBS red starting tomorrow

66044 drops into the loop at Pilning with 6B86 Avonmouth to Aberthaw coal 7/5/10

57308 Tin Tin leads 57306 Jeff Tracy on 2C79 14.00 Cardiff to Taunton at Pilning 7/5/10

With a puff of both sand and clag 66611 leaves the loop at Pilning with 6A21 Cardiff Docks to Theale, believed to be a trial working. 6A21 normally runs in the morning from Pengam 7/5/10

66084 rolls towards Pilning with 6B50 Swindon to Llanwern steel empties 7/5/10

43190 speeds through Pilning on its way to London 7/5/10

67022 leads the Cargo-D mk2 set (today including the EWS brake in place of a TSO) and 67029 on 2U20 12.47 Paignton to Cardiff 7/5/10

If Jo doesn't mind, I tried to photograph some odd workings at Temple Meads tonight, but imagine my dismay when the Portbury car train masked my view of the two locomotives I wanted to see.

 

I turned up at Platform 3 hoping to photograph the two steam engines, but I didn't anticipate the departure of the Portbury car train from Temple Meads. This huge train trundled by slowly hidding 4965 Rood Ashton Hall and Castle Class 4-6-0 no 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe.

4965 with 5043 leading the 1Z43 0701 Birmingham Snow Hill to Plymouth, passing Lower Claverham (N.Somerset) at 10:15 Saturday morning in bright sunshine. This will be the highlight of my 4000+ mile trip home!

Not at all Michael, the more the merrier! The Portbury cars does seem to be one of the more interesting and reliable workings in the area at the moment. A pity it "bowled" you for the shot you were after though!

Interesting combo there Travelintrev, might have to look around google maps for some snaps in that area

Is there just the one oil train then? if so, is it every day? 2 years of Pembrokeshire college (final exam done today) and I've seen nothing on the line, from the college windows, but dull old 175s.

As far as I'm aware there are two regulars. 6B13 to Westerleigh is off Robeston at 05.05, and the return 6B47 gets back in the middle of the night, passing Newport at 19.45. This is every weekday, slightly different on a Sat, but similar

6A11 to Theale is off Robeston at 22.46, and the the return to Robeston (6B33) is through Newport at 17.05. This is Tue, Thur Sat only, runs earlier on a Sat

The time from Robeston to Newport seems to be about 4 to 5 hours, not sure at what point in this gap Haverfordwest falls.

There are flows from Robeston to other places, but these seem a bit more sporadic

I'd highly recommend joining some Yahoo gen groups, recommend RGSW and 60gen for the Murcos

Well in the month since the last post there has been some interesting and unusual workings in the Bristol area.

On the 18th of May I was back in the Pilning area for another shot at 67018, as well as a pair of 31s on a test train. Ended up popping in to Ram Hill too, for a preserved loco move

31285 leads 31602 through Pilning with 1Z12 test train, which spent all day shuttling between Bristol and Newport. This was the last trip of the day, heading back to Temple Meads to stable for the night

47580 passes Ram Hill with 37264, 45133, 31271 and 50135 in tow, working as 0Z97 from Swanage to the SVR at Kidderminster after the Swanage Railway's diesel gala

Having been to Newport East Usk for fuel, 60054 returns to Westerleigh as 0E41, here passing Ram Hill

Ok so it's not in the Bristol area, but it was the same day, and is more EE powered traction!

A week later (3/6/10) brought the EWS/DBS management train through Bristol.

DVT 82146 leads 67029 on the EWS/DBS management train past Ram Hill with 5Z05 Toton - Exeter Riverside Yard. Tomorrow the train will be taking in some of the Cornish branches

Final shot for this update, yesterday (17/6/10) saw the failure of 57304 on the Cardiff-Taunton diagram, and my first photo of a Euoporte working.

After 57304 continued to refuse to play ball, 66721 was put on the GBRf operated set, with 57305 on the rear providing ETH on 2C79 Cardiff-Taunton. The loco has had all its First logos removed
