Good evening all, just a couple of slides I've just won to keep this thread ticking over.

Both will need a bit of work with photoshop to colour correct and scan at better resolution but this made them fairly cheap.

The first just wow, D801 and D802 which looks shortly after withdrawal - is it Laira or Old Oak?

Next D816 Eclipse at Newton Abbott

post-6925-0-07324600-1427140331_thumb.jpg

These must have been taken around 1969, D816 had single Central BR arrow by then. 801 and 802 were being stripped at Laira

Interesting report here https://www.flickr.com/photos/wilster200/8717583097/in/photolist-ehkTJR-9GjewM-qxNRf3-eiygD seems to confirm that they split up - but theres a shot of them back together looking very sad at Swindon, can find that now though

I also remember my dad taking me into the South Devon shed at Exeter St Davids where there were some withdrawn or stored 22s and Warships though I dont know which ones.

In my spotting book I have no record of seeing either 801 or 802.

cheers

One of the distinguishing features of D800-802 was they lacked the roof fan walkways. I can't get the BBcode to work on my iPad but here's a link to the only shot I can find of 801s roof from the Robert Carroll collection.

Me neither.

I was told by the locals at Exeter in 1969 that both locos were visible from trains passing Laira, and all I had to do was get a return to Plymouth, but I was a bit strapped for cash.

They suggested I just travelled sans-ticket, but I had just recovered from having my name and address taken the previous evening by the ticket inspector for the 'crime' of standing at the vestibule window of the first carriage (which on this day happened to be 1st class) of the Golden Hind between Exeter and Newton Abbot, so the thought of my parents being invoiced for excess fares, etc., was more than I could cope with, so I am entirely responsible for missing my chance.

Thanks to everyone who posts pictures.Nostalgia is very therapeutic! With regard to 801/802 they were indeed separated with 801 languishing at Newton Abbot for some time. It is widely believed that they moved to Swindon on 21st July 1970. D839 Relentless collected Vanguard from Newton Abbot with a brake van and proceeded on to Exeter where Formidable and D830 Majestic were added to the convoy. This train left at 13.36 as 8Z36 bound for Swindon. Hence the picture of them coupled together in Swindon yard. There is a picture of this convoy posted somewhere. It would be interesting to build a full picture of these type of movements for disposal while we are all still here!

Here is a photo to re-ignite (or maybe not) the chromatic blue debate.

Given that the 4-COR nearest to D831 is in BR Blue, it is difficult to make a case that the two blues are the same shade.

Bear in mind that the bulbous nose is reflecting the light in all directions.

Compare the LH cab side, with the double arrow, with the EMU; not that much difference, if any.

Regards,

John isherwood.

Interesting that the shot of D831 is on the same day as the one on the first page in this thread at Waterloo.

Actually both 4CORS look different blues too, I think it quite variable in shade amongst the fleet.

Yes, I did begin to think that as well, but I was feeling in a somewhat mischievous mood. ;)

One is blue painted onto primed metal and one is blue painted onto primed wood, so the same shade of blue would look different I think?

Mike.

A layer of prestolinth between the primer and metal too Mike!

D1030 (of Landore) on the Par Park Royal Freightliner. This train was only worked by Westerns on a handful of occasions because not many were air braked and those that were stayed in South Wales at the time. I don't know of any other photo in existence of a hydraulic on this train-prove me wrong!
