RMweb Gold Popular Post NHY 581 Posted December 22, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted December 22, 2021 18 hours ago, NHY 581 said: Hi Bob. Thank you. I'm convinced this is a motor issue which is why I ran the motor disconnected from the bogies. It is definately tighter at low rpm in one direction. You can see it hesitating as the flywheels revolve even after light lubing. Connect the motor to either bogie and the result is the same. Install a decoder, no change. I firmly believe DCC needs a loco to run well to start with. Yes, Zimo decoders are good and the Class 15 definately runs better with one than it did with the DCC Concepts Zen. But the Class 15 ran well to start with and the loss in slow speed control was down to the zen decoder, not the loco. As I mentioned earlier, the bogies seem fine. It has to be the tightness of the motor. I'll leave it running for a bit longer and see if it improves but given the time spent doing this already, I'm not overly confident of this making any difference. If as expected there is no change then I'll explore the motor options and take it from there. Updates will follow. Rob. Morning all. The motor was left running for a further 3hrs in each direction yesterday afternoon/evening. As expected, there was no change. By chance I decided to check the Lendons website and they have both lengths of Heljan motor in stock at decent enough prices for each. A quick exchange of texts with the owner and it was confirmed they should also be able to remove and replace the flywheels. ( I don't have a puller) If time permits, I hope to pop in today or tomorrow. Rob. 12 2

RMweb Gold NHY 581 Posted December 22, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 22, 2021 To be honest, it's at least 30yrs since I had wool like that gentleman. Too late to do anything now that I can finally grow my hair longer than collar length ( not now being constrained by regs). Today's trip to the trainshop to sort out the motor didn't comd off. Too busy with other more important family stuff. May try again tomorrow but not looking good. More likely after Crimbo now. Not a drama. Winslow Boy
Never mind Rob, family comes first. Anyway good things come to those who wait. Have a good Christmas and a happy new year. Cheers Ian
RMweb Gold Popular Post The Stationmaster Posted December 27, 2021 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted December 27, 2021 I have become most concerned that a family member has been spying on the threads I look at on RMweb. As usual my daughter gave me a book for Christmas and her purchasing for the present is always carefully based on what she considers to be what interests me. This year's present is a volume entitled 'A Short History of the World According to Sheep'. I have thus far only read a couple of chapters and they are actually highly informative but none of the sub-titles of any chapters contain any reference atall to model railways although the final chapter - 'Up, Up and Away' is subtitled 'sex and sheep in space' (which still might not have anything to do with model railways?) 2 28
RMweb Gold Popular Post NHY 581 Posted December 27, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted December 27, 2021 Well, there it was, gone. With Crimbo out of the way one can start to look forward to the new year. Ordinarily, I would be back in work today but as 'work ' is no longer the case, for now at least, I can hopefully start to progress Ewe. Following an inspired choice by Father Christmas, I now have my very own NCE Powercab thing. That means that the kit so very kindly loaned by Gilbert of the parish can be packed away ahead of its triumphant return to Gilbert Towers. First off then will be a few tweaks to the wiring. Nothing ground breaking. A few additional power feeds and a couple of isolating fish plates to be inserted. Once all is confirmed to be well with it all, I will add the backscene, 'roof', home fascia, lighting and install the NCE gubbins. Most of this will then be removed to allow painting of track and ground cover, weathering of track ballasting of same and adding the base layer of static grass. That will probably do for now and anything over and above that will be a bonus. Rob. 19
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted December 27, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 27, 2021 Not having a Room of Doom, just a Garage of Cold, progress on both Trelothen and Project Castell has somewhat stalled. Small increments of work are being done at the modelling table, mainly making and/or adaptation of SMS kits. Enjoy your newly discovered time off, it won't last... 4 1

With my Shelfie’s they are all initially configured for D.C. operation, plugging in DCC, or designing for it I’d expect less wiring on a ‘simple’ layout. If you’re putting in more wiring or isolation sections for DCC, just take an artist’s step back from the work, and take a fresh look in case that general principle isn’t extant, and ask why. Evening Paul, Wise words. To be quite honest, I don't need to do this and having read your post, I'll step back from tinkering further. It has an element of fixing something that really isn't broken. It works fine on DC. No isolating sections, two track feeds. Change nothing, unplug Combi, plug in NCE and play. Leave well alone methinks. That's less to worry about ! RMweb Gold Donw Posted December 27, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 27, 2021 Putting in extra isolating sections for DCC usually means the frog connections are extended to the whole length of sidings so with DC you get automatic isolation if the turnout isn't set for the siding. However this will not stop DCC working but say you park a loco in the siding will another goes by on the main. The decoder will cease to receive DCC signals therefore any lights will go off and if you have a sound decoder the sound will stop. Not a big issue but if you have some diseals with sound they go through a whole start up routine which can be irritating. So with DCC is is preferred to put isolation after the frog and feed the track beyond this is not needed on the stock rails ust the frog rails. It is not important but if you might want to do it best done before ballasting. Although a simple cut in the rail post ballasting and drill a hole through the ballast for an additional feeder. Don the change to italics is just my computer having fun it also finds it fun to omit spaces between words. 2
