I think that I will have to send a strongly worded telegram to the Standard Triumph Motor Co. Actually, it's interesting to think how many newer and superior cars that it has outlasted. Also the expense and complications involved in replacing a damaged fuel line on a car made in the last twenty years. 6

Ashley Bridge
I think we’re all going to have to keep a watchful eye on the fuel systems of any classic vehicle . Most of the elements won’t be damaged by the ethanol we’re being saddled with, but there is always a possibility of something reacting badly to it. RMweb Gold Popular Post NHY 581 Posted November 22, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted November 22, 2021 (edited) Morning all, Well, that was a lovely day out in Thornbury yesterday. An early start meant a nice drive over the bridge followed by a pleasant meander through the lanes to the Chantry. All done in crisp, fresh sunshine. I was made to feel most welcome by Chris H, Eric and Bill and after a bit of instruction on DCC and kadees, I was able to operate Penmaenbach, albeit with some questionable competency. (Red button was my good friend, once or twice !) It was ( read very much) an eye opening experience. In contrast to my usual 'manual, pokey finger everything' operation, here was a proper hands off layout. Everything worked beautifully and as it should. The NCE DCC gubbins were easy to use though the capabilities of the system far exceeded those of my own. Given my basic level of understanding the combination of control systen, loco chips and the overall construction provided excellent control and low speed running. Really satisfying and thoroughly absorbing at times. The sound produced by the locos was spot on and a benchmark on how to use it, rather than putting the volume so high it annoyed everyone. Loved it ! Peco bullhead track and points were beautifully laid and presented. Very nice indeed and were flawless in operation. I've never operated a layout using kadee couplings before, Again, eyes were opened and they were very easy to use. If anyone needed to see how a layout should operate at an exhibition, this was it. A true benchmark Add this to the hospitality/ constant, high quality banter provided by Chris and his minions, Eric and Bill, capped by a chance encounter with a Hornby 08........AND the extremly generous loan made by Chris of a spare NCE system to try for myself I had a really, really good day out. Top stuff. Rob. Edited April 4, 2022 by NHY 581 24 1 1 2

RMweb Gold Gilbert Posted November 22, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 22, 2021 (edited) But seriously Sir Sheep of Bloke is very kind...please rest assured there were wrinkles and failures.....and as you can imagine the hired help were very quick to point them out in the most annoying manner they could muster.... On balance I'm pleased with the outing and was very glad of the contribution made by our sponsor. Layout has been safely unloaded - I just need to address the pile of cr*p that's now on our dining room table and decide what I can now drop from the loading list next time we play out.. RMweb Premium New Haven Neil Posted November 22, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 22, 2021 I did mention a while ago how good the SLW 24's are, their running is top class, as good as any of my US locos, and the sound is way out the best I have heard. They are indeed a bechmark. 2

RMweb Gold NHY 581 Posted November 22, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 22, 2021 One thing that also stood out was how light the layout was. Incredibly so, given the size. Oh, and the timber 'under baseboard' supports. To be cribbed. Rob..

RMweb Premium PMP Posted November 22, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 22, 2021 The NCE system is a very good introduction to DCC. It’s reasonably intuitive and suited for those not interested in the ‘background’ DCC stuff so is pretty much ‘plug and play’. If you get into DCC it’s also very good for larger more complex layouts. The Hornby 08 you ‘needed’, really benefits from running in well, either on rollers or round a simple loop. 1 5 2
RMweb Gold Popular Post NHY 581 Posted November 22, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted November 22, 2021 (edited) Thanks Paul, I'm yet to set up and give it a whirl. I have located a couple of chips to pop into two locos to see how it goes and will of course report back in due course. This evening, I have been tinkering with the 'Thornbury ' 08. All was not quite as it seemed as It was missing the air tanks. However, I had a spare set in stock from Bachmann's version. I've therefore set to and mounted them in the void and it looks okay. I'm also trialling a modified T/L. Thinned and hook removed. I'm really pleased with this loco though I need to sort out the bonnet ladders and give it a good work out Rob Edited April 4, 2022 by NHY 581 26
