cromptonnut
I am planning on using some of the Woodlands Scenics "Realistic Water" (http://www.ehattons.com/19107/Woodland_Scenics_C1211_Realistic_Water/StockDetail.aspx) for a tidal river estuary on one of my forthcoming modules. The sort of effect I am seeking to achieve is similar to this http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ysigOvDtPUM/VDxG5CVejfI/AAAAAAAAKo8/th_hr4XY_uY/s1600/2014%2B0923%2B088%2B(LDLUX4)%2BBetween%2BColyford%2Band%2BSeaton,%2Bsouthbound%3B%2BSeaton%2BTramway.JPG http://www.macadder.net/walking/south_west_coast_path/image09-12.jpg The water is usually a pale sort of muddy grey/brown tint, rather than the typical "clear millpond" effect that is often seen when using these sort of products. Has anyone done this, and if so what do you use to do so?
cromptonnut
I suppose it is an option, I just thought that the PVA would take a lot longer to dry (and not necessarily very well in this weather) than the scenic water, presumably any water-based paint/acrylic would work for tinting (if you can manage to get it evenly distributed throughout)? cromptonnut
Just wasn't sure if that would dry "mostly clear" and not give that murky effect which I was looking for?
cromptonnut
Thanks for that Mickey - was that PVA "as is" rather than coloured, as that looks the right level of 'murk' that I was looking for. Incidently, what varnish were you using?
allan downes
Will this help ? Two stippled layers of PVA over a greenish bed. If you use the best PVA - Evostik Wood Adhesive - it will dry out in half the time of cheaper PVA's. Cheers. Allan
allan downes
Or for heavier water movement four good thick stippled layers such as this. Applying four separate layers and waiting for each to dry will take time but you should get the effect you're looking for. Cheers. Allan
cromptonnut
My mum thought that first one was a picture of a real location, so that's certainly something to aim towards. It'll be a while as I haven't done anything except build the baseboard frames yet - next is the bridge, then the mudflats/estuary, then the "water" so I'll keep you posted - but this weather isn't really conducive to things drying quickly, is it? RMweb Premium Stevie Posted January 7, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 7, 2015 Did this as a trial piece many moons ago ( 5 years ish ) after it went milky made me think twice about pva saying that it has traveled. p.s. 3 thin coats of pva on acrylic paint steve
allan downes
I just can't see how that happened Steve as PVA by its nature alone dries out transparent and I've used the method countless times. Can you remember which brand it was as this might have had something to do with it ? Cheers. Allan.
RMweb Gold russ p Posted February 3, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 3, 2015 I see people have had got very good results with PVA but prior to reading this I've bought some woodland scenics realistic water. I'm planning to paint the river bed, but to get the murky water typical of Norfolk coastal rivers I was wondering what I could use to slightly tint this product? What I'm concerned about is that I add something that will cause a reaction

I've had a bit of a disaster with some woodland scenics products (see my layout thread) so I'm going to do the PVA method. Cheers
Peterkern23
With a cheap art brush from a pound shop? Just a guess.
