ThePurplePrimer
I am reading an old RM article written by the Rev W Audrey where he describing the operation of one of his model railway layouts. He uses the phrase "Scarborough Fashion" and I get the feeling he is talking about something on the real railways rather than something in one of his stories. He says ... (The loco) has crept from the quarry line and backed to the passenger platform, Scarborough Fashion. Does anyone know what the phrase refers to ? RMweb Premium Flying Pig Posted November 5, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 5, 2014 The Whitby to Scarborough line joined the main route out of Scarborough at a West-facing junction and trains along it had to reverse both in and out of Scarborough Central station. leopardml2341
Wasn't it something to do with the excursion platforms, which IIRC were actually at Falsgrave, just beyond Scarborough - inland of course. In light of what Flying Pig posted (at same time) - dismiss the above as the ramblings of a lunatic.
RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted November 5, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 5, 2014 Could be referring to Whitby trains emerging from Falsgrave tunnel which would reverse into platform 1 (and later 1A).
micknich2003
He could have been ref to the way the Whitby trains worked.

That was Londesborough Road station, between Central and the shed, empty trains would be kept at the sidings on the Whitby line and would run through the tunnel and into the platform in a near continuous procession so no reversing. RMweb Premium Flying Pig Posted November 5, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 5, 2014 Looks like the 17.04 (and relief), the 17.05 and the 17.06 were on time this evening. Whatever happened to the 17.07?
Tin Turtle
The reversing of trains led to a nasty incident killing the Guard and severely injuring the Fireman of a train in 1915 (I think) when the locomotive ran into it's own train, thinking the points had been switched - full details in my book
Boris
Trains were authorised to propel between Whitby Town and Whitby West Cliff and into Scarborough station provided the train was comprised of no more than four bogie vehicles with a brake van outermost in which the Guard must ride and the train must not exceed 10 mph. (LNER Sectional appendix) It was also authorised for up to 7 vehicles at Guisborough.
jwealleans
Are you saying Guisborough was more fashionable than Scarborough?
byron
Are you saying Guisborough was more fashionable than Scarborough? What do you mean was? Is should be used. Guisboring is the place! If only we could have a rail connection back again. Mike
jwealleans
Scarborough managed to stay in Yorkshire. If we did get a rail link back, they'd only close it and build a new one in Redcar instead.
