RMweb Gold roundhouse Posted May 20, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 20, 2015 Now for some class 33 action at Barnstaple, again in 1985. The 33 has detatched from the rake of Mk1's. Its seen where James May started his Flying Scotsman run on oo track!! The 33 running past the old island platform. This platform was last used (IIRC) for the GWR 150 exhibition train the same year. And finally ready to depart next to the now long gone goods shed. How I miss these scenes. \my first ever trip up the line was at dusk in a mk1 with a 33 on the front, passing a freight at Eggesford.
bgman
For those who may be interested, following on from yesterday I took a trip into Crediton earlier and found work progressing well. As I thought there is to be a temporary overbridge erected for passengers. The main walkway is planned to be put into place this Saturday night once all the rail traffic has finished for the evening. Following which the original bridge walkway is to be lifted by a specialist contractor the on the following Saturday night and removed to the sidings for refurbishment. The Friends of Crediton Station have plans for it to be painted in the L.S.W.R colours to reflect those of the station today. Progress so far......... Excuse the shots they were taken on my iPhone! Whilst talking to an extremely interesting operative he also related details about the Dawlish sea wall which he had worked on and was proud to have been a part of it. An extremely pleasant way to pass the time of day whilst waiting for the train
BG John
Where did all those houses come from? They weren't there last time I was there! Is the dog friendly cafe still open in the station building?
alaneggleston
One also has to ask the question: When was the last time The North Devon Line saw a weed killing train?
RMweb Gold roundhouse Posted May 20, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 20, 2015 I am surprised that they needed to put up a temporary footbridge considering thereis generally only one train an hour each way and there is a level crossing.
bgman
Where did all those houses come from? They weren't there last time I was there! Is the dog friendly cafe still open in the station building? Hi John Are you the same person I met many years ago when I made the Avonside layout? Anyway, those houses were the last development I looked after as a LA Building Inspector before retiring about 17 months ago. Sadly the old brick goods shed was demolished as part of this. The land was sold by Tescos to a housing authority. As for the cafe, yes it's still open but very much on an as and when basis but a 7mm group meet there once a month I believe and the model of the station is still on display. The last time I saw them I chatted with Martin Welch. I've seen dog walkers there too so possibly ok to take yours in. Regards Grahame

There's one in the sidings at St.Davids currently so you never know ? If not I'm thinking of giving David Bellamy a ring !

RMweb Gold roundhouse Posted May 20, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 20, 2015 (edited) I wonder how often it will get used. Maybe it's to keep locals fit especially as it's going to be a higher walk than the existing footbridge?? Edited May 20, 2015 by roundhouse
Rivercider
One also has to ask the question: When was the last time The North Devon Line saw a weed killing train? Thanks for the interesting information about the current developments at Crediton. And since we are on the subject of weeds here was the view at Copplestone last year, (my grandad was a relief signalman and worked here in the 1920s) Copplestone looking north 14/6/2014 cheers

If you really fancy a belly laugh just come down on Saturdays and watch the Real Ale "buffs" trying to negotiate the bridge after a skin full. Even funnier when they're on the wrong platform and realise they have to cross back over the bridge ! Think I'm joking? Come and watch the antics, it's far better than the tele.....now that gives me an idea to make a quick £250 !! Video camera ready

If you've been involved with the BGS we've probably bumped into each other, as I was on the committee for some years, and stirred up trouble by setting up the first web site and starting the eGroup! I was parked outside the cafe once, and the woman running it saw my dog in the car and demanded that I bring him in! She told me how she'd asked the hygiene inspector about dogs, and his reply was that he didn't have the slightest concern about them. It was baby's nappies being changed on the tables that got him wound up! It used to be a handy place to stop off when I was passing through on business, but it's a bit far from Wales since I moved here!

Hi John,Thought it was you, I was/still am in the BGS and took the part completed Avondide to Newbury many years ago ( annoyingly the hard drive on which my photos of it were placed died on me and I stupidly didn't back them up ! Hey ho !). There were some photos posted on the old style BGS site which you were probably involved with or may have even taken and put them on there yourself I suspect but they don't appear to be available any longer. Still, good to see you're alive and kicking and modelling too. Kind regards Grahame Edited May 20, 2015 by bgman

If you think that is bad then try the trip across the Pennines of a weekend - all the really good pubs from Stalybridge to Dewsbury and the trains are often over run by people who have had way too many!! RMweb Gold roundhouse Posted May 20, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 20, 2015 And now for the GWR 150 exhibition train in the old platform in 1985. We helped staff the train whilst it was there and a small group of us had a layout in the old parcels shed.

RMweb Gold roundhouse Posted May 21, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 21, 2015 (edited) A few freight photos taken in the Summer of 1985. Two different class 31's. I may have posted one or two of these on the North Devon Freight thread but thought that they would fit in here aswell.
