Quite an extraordinary flavour. I don't think it was off, but I found it undrinkable. Possibly one of these "acquired taste" beers as someone else in the pub was saying how good it was. I hasten to add that Beerheadz is renowned for the quality of its beer - not for nothing was it Notts CAMRA's Pub of the Season last winter. They specialise in bringing in beers from micro-breweries all over the UK and I have no doubt that the fact i didn't like my pint was nothing to do with the pub or the way the beer was kept, but just that I didn't like the rather unique flavour of that particular brew. andyram Posted May 17, 2015 Share Posted May 17, 2015 I have to say that Wychwood is the best brewery for me. Hobgoblin is untouchable, although Theakstons Old Peculiar runs it close. Worst beer I have ever had was at an early Great Central Railway festival - Nutbrook "Banter" ale. It sounded lovely in the programme. I ordered a generous half pint as I left Loughborough. Most of it was tipped onto the track when the train returned an hour and a half later. It has gone down in legend with my mate as the poorest beer we've ever endured. I tried a couple of pints years ago and thought it was pigswill. Even when visiting firms in Leicester as part of my job I was warned off it! However it regularly gets decent reviews at festivals so I tried a pint in the local 'Spoons a couple of weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised. Hobgoblin fans will love it although very parochial - I buy bottles straight from the brewery in Bridport. My local in Kidderminster has recently had a few Nottingham Brewery beers in, Dreadnought was fantastic, still waiting for the Extra Pale Ale though. Tried Ludlow Blonde for the first time, had to have another 4 just be sure it was as good as the first pint and it is tremendous. Neil Indeed, Palmers are one of the better, older, independent brewers, if you can, go on one of their brewery tours. Prefer Tally Ho to Hobby, it's less heavy, and drier, but tends ( in my mind) to lean more to a porter than a ruby. ozzyo Posted May 21, 2015 Share Posted May 21, 2015 went to York to see some drawings at the N.R.M. on the 20/5/15, first call was the York Tap, 18 heads on, what to go for? as it was only about 10AM I went for this one. Nice and light with a sharp after taste. The second pint was this, as I do like the dark beers, OK at about 10;30am it was a bit much. But a very nice pint. Back to the tap at about 3pm and had one of these, a good drinking pint. Then after I'd finished at the N.R.M. I went to a J.D.Spoon's and had one of these (look at the price a pound less than the Tap). Then it was back to the Tap for my last pint in York of the day, All of the beers that I had were all good and the bar staff knew the job and how to serve the beer. What is wrong with your taste buds??? :-p The Hobgoblin that we get in Manchester tends to be of the "Fast Cask" variety. Pre-conditioned, filtered, vent, tap and serve immediatley. It is a beer to be avoided, not drunk! That is a shame. Pubs around here keep it very well. It is weaker than the bottled stuff, but still a lovely pint. Prefer it from a bottle though.
