trisonic
Seen outside the “works” at New Hope. This apparently ex CN locomotive: It was very difficult to get a decent view of it - only close up! More photos to follow. Best, Pete.
trisonic
Some more photos from today: It looks like “The Works” have been updating and fitting new stuff to it: More anon. Best, Pete.
trisonic
Found this photo of # 5315. It is, of course, a SD 40-2 (W). If anyone could advise why it was designated GF- 30S by CN please pipe up..... http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2749151 According to this it is owned by the New Hope and Ivyland RR but was only used as part of their freight operation. doctor quinn
Hi Pete, It is indeed an Ex-CN SD40-2W, it seems to have been around a bit; RR Picture Archives has pics of it with NHRR and PNRR reporting marks. Would I be right in thinking all those railroads are in common ownership? The new bits look like a speedometer drive, though I could be wrong. All the best Nick
doctor quinn
Hi Pete, As to why CN called it a GF30S; G - General Motors Diesel Division, F - Freight, 30 - 3000hp, S- individual batch of that class of loco. Nick
trisonic
I figured that the Canadians/Canadiens must have used their own nomenclature to classify them. Yes, it is a speedo drive, they also replaced some kind of bogie/truck damping system too (amongst visible changes)- I’ll put some more photos up later....... Cheers, Nick. Best, Pete. Adrian Wintle
Hi Pete, As to why CN called it a GF30S; G - General Motors Diesel Division, F - Freight, 30 - 3000hp, S- individual batch of that class of loco. Nick A lot of railroads use/used their own designation system for locos - they are more concerned about it's capabilities rather than it's model. The PRR used a similar designation system to CN, although G meant GE for them. Adrian
trisonic
Ok - some more detail shots, plus a link from 2011. Brake actuator (and top of bogie/truck) detail: Looks like a dampener fitted: The “box” on top right of centre is where the speedo cables went to. GE Emission data: Canadian foundry on bogie/truck frames: Is that stanchion bolted down? Some of the bogie/ truck detail is finer than I mentioned.... Best, Pete. EDIT: You should be able to click on my photos to enlarge them,
trisonic
Not from 2011 but some clips of former CN #5315 in 2012: Enjoy, Pete.
Adrian Wintle
The GE emissions notice is interesting. Did GE do work on the engine, possibly to improve its emissions rating? Adrian
trisonic
Don’t know - the piece of paper or label looks very recent - particularly so in terms of the state of the paintwork.....It’s there in 2012 because you can see it in the above video. Stop the video at 3:54 and you can see it (it’s the white patch) on the nose side in front of the Cab on top of the "foot plate”... Best, Pete.
