Good evening, David. That’s a fantastic selection of photo’s of Switzerland, standard gauge and metre gauge, at Interlaken Ost and West, in 1988, and 1991. In particular I love the photo’ at Interlaken West, of the DB Glaserner Zug 491001 and SBB Re4/4ii 11189, on the 13th August, 1988, C10919.

The black and white photo’s of Radford Junction on the Midland, are an excellent and nostalgic set. I particularly like the first photo’ of Jubilee, 45694, Bellerophon, on an up express passenger train from Leeds to St Pancras, in c1951. A onetime everyday scene on the Midland.

Very best regards,

Rob.

The lamp hanging from the corner of Radford Jct signal box - what is that for, I've not seen one like that before (that I can remember)? It seems to have blinders on the side to shine across the tracks only, but not in line with the crossing. To illuminate the coal (?) bin opposite?

I'm sure I used to know this, a long time ago.  Was it to cast light on loco numbers or something to enable train registers to be accurate?

And a greenhouse on the allotment - on railway land? Just noticed the bean row too.

Allotments for railway workers were once common on railway land, this is probably one.

A nice set of photos of a steam railway at work.

Radford Junction  Jubilee 45694 Bellerophon up XP Leeds to St Pancras c1951 JVol1187 shows how short an express service can be.

I thought that at first but then realised the train was coming off the left hand fork and so any additional coaches were hidden.

The Chester business was a runaway oil train that ended up at the buffers in one of the east facing bays at Chester General. The train had come from Ellesmere Port and reversed at Helsby before proceeding onwards towards Chester.  Thanks to some poor work checking the braking, it couldn't stop and was directed into a bay containing a 2 car DMU which was crushed.  The fire was due to fuel from the loco and crushed DMU igniting, the DMU and the loco were burned out. The heat of the blaze overheated the leading tanks containing kerosene and petrol, some of which escaped and fuelled the fire.  Adjacent DMUs were damaged to some extent by the fire.

I was originally more or less wrong about the direction the oil train came from and the disposition of the DMUs, but I've edited out MY misconceptions!

Here's the accident report with what actually happened.

Four photos at Chester and two from South Bank, near Middlesbrough this morning.  Although the accident at Chester did a lot of damage no one was seriously injured, or I would not post the photos.

Good evening, David. That’s a superb set of four photo’s at Chester with two from South Bank, near Middlesbrough. In particular, I like C932, at Chester, with the damaged oil tankers and breakdown crane, in May, 1972. It is an excellent view of those bracket signals, just perfect for modelling purposes.

The photo’s along and beyond the High Dyke branch in BR days and a bit later are an excellent selection. I particularly like C0989, at Skillington Road Junction, with Class 31, 5571, on a train of empties in June, 1972. An excellent composition of the 31 and the signal.

Very best regards,

Rob.

Good evening, David. Firstly, I’m sorry to be late this evening, but I’m just recovering from migraine.

That’s a fantastic set of photo’s from Austria at Schwarzach St Veit in 1989 and Wald am Arlberg in 1991. I particularly like C16174, at Wald am Arlberg, with Class 1042, 1042 611 2, on a service to Bregenz, on the 6th August, 1991. Such a superb composition of the train and the mountains forming the backdrop.

The photo’s of the ECML in Northumberland around Ulgham Lane crossing are an excellent selection. In particular the last photo’ of an HST on a down express, going away, on the 28th December, 1985, is a magnificent shot, in the snow, with the snow eddies captured perfectly.

Very best regards,

Rob.

I think this is 5671 - the tablet catcher and recess is just about visible in the driver’s door - and what a fabulous photo as well. Another worthy unusual example and livery for Accurascale 😀 @McC??

Good evening, David. That’s a fantastic set of photo’s from 2017 and 2018, on the ECML in Northumberland. In particular I like BSC_5111, at Morpeth, with a XC HST, and power car 43301 leads, on an up express, on the 20th April, 2018. A well composed shot of the iconic train.

The photo’s of places in the west are a delightful selection. J3188, of Sharpness Docks, in April, 1973, is an excellent photo’ which, in addition to the cranes and ships, your Mum can be seen in the foreground.

Very best regards,

Rob.

Some somewhat more recent photos from 2017 and 2018 on the ECML in Northumberland for a change this morning.

These photos show how much the railway can change, even in a short time; The only train which can still be seen at that location is the XC Voyager!

Your pictures are an invaluable record of railway history which, after all, begins yesterday. Many thanks again David.

York 47316 Kings X to Edinburgh May 74 J3684

It’s not 47316, David, as it’s got an ETH connector on the buffer beam and 47316 was a non-ETH loco.
It’s almost certainly 47516 as there are photos of it online at Gateshead in May 1974 with silver buffers.
