It depends a bit on the time of day but there are a lot more trains now than 40 years ago.

Yes, I've found that on my local line. If you go at the right time - which you can check on Real Time Trains, something not available 40 years ago - there can be a good succession of trains.

I assume the 141R tender at Harwich was the one off the loco that ended up at Bressingham?

I believe so.

Good evening, David. Sorry to be late, from yesterday evening, but I went to bed early last night, but what an excellent set of photo’s at Damdykes from Tuesday the 3rd September, 2024. In particular the last photo’ of 221129, on 1V56, a Glasgow Central to Plymouth express at 10.27. The ‘mirror glazing’ shows up well reflecting the sky.

That is a superb selection of photo’s from Essex, with three at Harwich and two at Rayleigh. C1872, at Harwich, with SNCF 141R tender, in March, 1975, is a splendid shot with good detail of the tender to be seen.

The black and white print of a J20/1, 64697, on a down class C, through freight train from Temple Mills to Whitemoor, at Barnwell Junction, in February, 1949, is a true gem, and thank you for posting it.

The photo’s of the Grantham to Nottingham line at Bottesford and Radcliffe on Trent/Rectory Junction as well as the line to Cotgrave Colliery, are a splendid set of photo’s. In particular I like J1500, at Cotgrave, with a Class 31 on an up coal train from the colliery, in November, 1968, which shows a well weathered locomotive on a typical train of wagons for the era. All long gone.

Very best regards,

Rob.

1A28 had a Leeds origin - but it may be that an earlier train in the diagram was formed by a Harrogate portion or that it formed a later, down Harrogate or Halifax splitter (I don't recall the diagrams that long ago, now). That might explain the back end of the train - with the catering vehicles part of the train originating or terminating at Leeds - and the duplication of brake vehicles.

1A28 was from1535 Leeds it earlier working was from 1015 KGX and that was it for the day. Normal formation BFK,TSO, TSO, TSO, BSO, TSO,TSO, RB, RUO, FO, BFK.                                                                                                                                            On Sundays it was used on  Bradford/Harrogate service 1L07 and return 1A31.

Bottesford 20177 and ano Burton on Trent to Skegness Aug 83 C6206

20 177 was paired with 20 192 - and only worked on Thursday 4th August, according to RailGenArchive.

Its mainly due to the handheld "Brick" performing at the limits of its capabilities on, as you say, a dull and murky eventide.  f3.8 was, I think, the maximum aperture of the lens and 1/100s the minimum shutter speed for handheld use, even with nominally 400 ASA film by current standards. However its interesting to see that the express headlights were resolved, even though they were glowing paraffin lamps!

In many ways toda's black and white photo is of very poor quality - and the print was not in the best of condition either.

However to me it is very atmospheric being taken a bit before dusk on what looks to have been a dull and murky day in March 1949 at Hitchin.

Great pictures as ever Dave.

It is such an interesting thread

That Texaco tanker also brought back memories.

I also seem to remember the old Esso ones in white were about at the same time I think.

Best wishes

Steve

Good evening, David. That’s a superb set of photo’s, with four in Lincolnshire and one in Nottinghamshire. In particular I like J2151, at Honington Junction, of a Class 114 on a Grantham to Skegness service, in July, 1970, which is a delightful ‘train in the landscape’ scene.

The black and white print of B1, 61251, Oliver Bury, on a down express train from King’s Cross to Cleethorpes at Hitchin, in March, 1949, is exactly as you say, a most atmospheric photo’ and I’m glad you have posted it.

The black and white photo’s of Cromford, Derby and St Pancras are a superb selection. I particularly like JM89 at Derby, of an LMS Crab on an up freight train, in August, 1961. A lovely shot of the locomotive as it passes the signalbox.

Very best regards,

Rob.

Always good to see stuff from the Derby area, David. The Patriot is signalled towards Chadd Sdgs. As the loco was a Western Division example, it might've come over from Stoke or Runcorn.
