Hi Dave - excellent photos again, but I think you've mixed up the captions.

Or has the software done it for him free of charge?

Don't worry Dave, it is easy to tie up the captions with the images.

And a good chance to say Happy New Year.

Jonathan

They might be right now.  It is to do with the software issue as the photos ended up in the wrong places when I tried to add them which took several attempts.

Interesting to see cl.156 as a 3-car.

There were three units in Scotland reformed into two 3-cars on the West Highland Line (to enable an even split at Fort William) but I didn't realise it happened elsewhere.

This was built into the 156 design as inner couplings were mechanical BSI couplers with a separate control jumper - there was also a jumper socket on the cab end which all meant a driving car could be placed in the middle of an existing 2-car unit.

The Up Thames-Clyde was usually 1M86. A 1Cxx headcode would suggest a St. Pancras(?) service running wholly within the LMR.

ISTR at some point, although technically a through service, the Thames-Clyde being run as two separate trains i.e. Glasgow-somewhere and then somewhere-St. Pancras?

Would the Thames Clyde have run via Manton in 67

Good evening, David. That’s a great set of photo’s of the ECML at Stannington and Ulgham Grange level crossings. C5118, at Ulgham Grange crossing, with a Class 37 on a down ballast train, in August, 1980, is an excellent and well composed shot of the 37 and train.

The mixed bag of photo’s is a superb selection. It’s a great shame about the forum software causing you to have such problems. I noticed something strange yesterday. Well, JBW4K5, at Torside, with an EM2 bound for Manchester, in 1960, is a particularly excellent photo’ of a locomotive and line now all long gone.

Thank you for trying to post the next photo’ of Edmondthorpe and Wymondham, with the view west, in July, 1974. A superb photo’.

The Pilmoor photo’s are a splendid set. C5971, of Class 37, 37014, on a down train of oil tanks, in February, 1983, is a well composed shot of a once common sight.

Thank you for succeeding and posting the final two of the extra photo’s. At Carlisle, with 156455, on a Leeds to Carlisle service , on the 24th October, 1990, in  C15433, is a reminder of the 156 three car hybrids.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

There should have been 5 photos in the post above but the software must have had too much to drink at lunchtime.

It would only allow me to put two photos in the post, when I tried to upload the rest they wouldn't, when I made one into a much larger file it did upload but then the sysytem wouldn't allow me to edit the post.

I have  managed to upload the photo below then it won't upload any more.  Andy Y does know about the problem, I suspect that at this time of year it may take a little while for it to be sorted out, so this may be the last post for now.

About 4 years ago I had a ride on a vintage tram car in Pague which was very similar if not the same as the one pictured in J1438. It was a great experience as although it was a preserved vehicle it was running in the city where it came from. It was arranged by my employer as part of a business convention and a large group of us filled 3 cars on an evening run before a dinner in a very strange restaurant which occupied an old church.

The trams were kept in very good condition.

Also Inverness-Aberdeen and Settle-Carlisle. The latter for one season pending platform extensions to permit 4-car units to call at all the intermediate stops.

The West Highland sets split at Crianlarich though, not Fort William. The service pattern being three workings to Crianlarich, splitting into an Oban and a Mallaig portion; plus one Fort William to Mallaig and return working.

http://members.madasafish.com/~dysgraphyk/156/class156_misformed.htm

Can't happen now, as all 156s now have fixed bar intermediate couplers and hardwired multi working cables to improve reliability.

Good evening, and Happy New Year, David. That’s a superb set of photo’s of the trams at Crich. J1446, of EE Franklin and John Bull, in September, 1968, is an excellent photo’ of a steam tram engine (of The New South Wales Government, number 47).

The mixed bag of photo’s are a delightful selection. The first photo’ at Denton Gunby, with an enthusiasts special, heading towards the exchange sidings, in September, 1970, is superb, and is of something which would not be allowed today - all those passengers in open wagons.

The photo’s of AC electrics around Hillmorton are a fantastic set. The third photo’ of a Class 86, on an up express, in June, 1975, is superb, and it can be seen that first class has a Mkl, a Mkll, non air con, and a Mkll air con. It shows that there could be variations in the formations even in the mid Seventies.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

I pity the poor person who was going to get told exactly what she thought of the situation.

Thanks for that, I couldn't remember the exact details! I'd read that a normal split of 6 cars meant that the 2-car was overloaded.

Just realised too that the extra DMS didn't need to go inside the 2-car, it could just be plonked on the end - no sense in splitting all three units when you only need to split one!

Can't remember offhand the ScR units used but there's a Glasgow Queen St. video on Soi Buakhao's YouTube channel that features them.

The Kegworth one is interesting to me as I had a wander round that area last year one evening whilst saying at a Hotel in Kegworth prior to a flight from East Midlands Airport.

Unfortunately the bridge parapet has been raised considerably since your photo was taken, so you can't see over it, but all of the railway related buildings on the left hand side do appear to survive to the present day in one form or another.
