Good evening, David. That’s a fantastic set of photo’s in Germany of the Harzquerbahn, at Wernigerode, on the 27th July, 1991. C16024, of DR 99 7232 4, is an excellent photo’ of the locomotive from the rear which shows a very full bunker.

The mixed bag of photo’s is a great selection. C17086, in Switzerland, of the Oberalppass Furka Oberalpbahn, with HGe4/4ii, on a westbound service, on the 28th July, 1992, is a truly stunning sight. The train is totally overwhelmed by the mountains.

Finally, the photo’s of places beginning with an M are a most interesting set. The last two photo’s of the Middleton incline, on the Cromford and High Peak line, in September, 1964, photo’s J175, and J176, are outstanding, and show something that is most historical.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

Love the measham Pic, in particular the ciggy ad, ‘for people who demand only the best’…..  ‘the best in smoking’

the area is pretty much unrecognisable today, the house the other side of the bridge is the best reference, the old station is still standing and looks to be a museum, you can see it on the left of this street view from roughly the same location as the original pic IMG_4069.jpeg.cddf7d604601d77fd79ec53a368e579c.jpeg

Great pictures David

Is Sarah Siddons hauling a unit or did the coaching stock have shoe beams for heating and lighting?

I think it is a rake of Dreadnought stock, they were loco hauled.  I am not sure about the shoe beams - I think I used to know a long time ago when I saw them from time to time on school trips to London.

The locos are quite short, weren’t the shoe beams added to the stock to avoid gapping?

Did they have traction current jumpers between stock and loco?

I was thinking loco has no boiler or ETH capability so heating must have been electric

As far as I know, according to J Graeme Bruce's "Steam to Silver", the Dreadnought stock had shoegear fitted to the brake coaches with a power bus line to minimise gapping. Later, electric heaters were added, so the trains were electrically-heated south of Rickmansworth and steam-heated between Rickmansworth and Aylesbury.

C21058: I like the wheel clamp on the car. Not often modelled but might make an interesting cameo with a motorist and traffic warden having an argument!

It's a Renault 5 GT Turbo, I believe - quite a sought-after & very 'stealable' car back in the day, so the 'boot' might well be an anti-theft precaution by the owner rather than parking enforcement 👍

Good spot. Described as a 'pocket rocket' by a contemporary motor magazine. Boy-racer's dream!

Good evening, David. That’s a great selection of photo’s of the Blyth and Tyne. The last photo’ at Morpeth, with

37516, The Blyth Spirit, on the 8th May, 2010, leaving the Blyth and Tyne to head south on the ECML, is a superb view of the 37.

The assorted photo’s are a superb set. The first photo’ at Peascliffe tunnel, 254008, Leeds to Kings Cross, in June, 1980, is a splendid photo’ by your Dad.

The photo’s of Edmondthorpe and Wymondham after closure, on the Midland Railway line from Saxby Junction to Bourne, along with two of a freight train at East Langton between Kibworth and Market Harborough on the Midland, are an excellent selection covering much of interest, along with the sadya closed line inevitably brings.

J1689, at East Langton, of Class 20’s D8141 and D8013, on a down freight train, in May, 1969, is a superb photo’ by your Dad, and the 20’s have a good dusty, weathered look to them.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

This evening's photos start with 4 taken at Edmondthorpe and Wymondham after closure.  It was on the Midland Railway line from Saxby Junction to Bourne where there was an end on junction to the Midland and Great Northern Railway to Norfolk.  When the attempt to preserve the BSC lines around the High Dyke line was active there was a plan to relay the track from Saxby Junction to Buckminster sidings to give access from Market Overton and Sewstern to BR without needing the junction at High Dyke which would have been very expensive to keep open.

The last 2 photos show a freight train at East Langton between Kibworth and Market Harborough on the Midland.

Doing my usual virtual line spotting, I can see that the station building survives

as does the goods shed and loading dock, possibly even the cattle pens

The bridge still stands

not much to see on the last pic but I’ve pin pointed it to Melton road, the windmill in the distance being the give away On the original pic, I cycled there late 2022 from Leicester via Melton Mowbray, continued on to Oakham from there

weirdly the other month I had to drive to Peterborough and ended up going via Melton then pretty much following the old line from saxby past buckminster sidings and joining the A1 at south witham and I noticed the old track bed on my sat nav so had a look at on railmap on line and now you’ve put pics up here too!

It closed to passengers in 1959 and goods in 1960 - it remained open for goods to Bourne until then.

A couple of decades later it could have been me on that cricket pitch!  The trains weren't quite as interesting by then, but still more interesting than cricket....
