Good evening, David. That’s a great set of photo’s of the High Dyke branch at Skillington Junction. In J2757, with a Class 31, on an up iron ore train, in August, 1971, it’s an excellent composition by your Dad, with plenty of foreground details to be seen.

The photo’s of Teesside are an excellent selection. In C9351, at Grangetown, with 20118 & 20137, on a train of empty potash, reversing onto the main line, on the 20th February, 1988, you have taken a superb shot and the 20’s display both headcode boxes and discs.

The black and white photo’s from the late 1940’s at Cambridge, are a truly fantastic selection. In JVol1424, with B17, 1665, Leicester City, on a Yarmouth to Liverpool St. service, and and F3, 7115, in 1947, makes an excellent composition of a scene which once was a commonplace sight.

Finally, the photo’s of Skipton in January and February, 1967, are a splendid set. In J778, with LMS Class 5’s, 44887 & 45219, in February, 1967, your Dad has taken a superb shot of the two engines, and it shows that weathering is not just dirty colours, but there is a texture to it too which is not always fully captured on models when they are weathered.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

Today we start with another batch of photos from the High Dyke branch at Skillington Junction.  The first five show Class 31s on iron workings in BR days.

The last photo was after BR had closed the branch when preserved locos used the line for interchange traffic with BR, in this case ballast empties.

You're a couple of days early posting these. It was 50 years ago that the last BR train left the line this week....

Some time after the last train ran BR sent someone to check everything had been removed, it was noted that a brake van had been left at Stainby sidings.  It was eventually removed but I cannot now remember whether BR sent a loco to collect it or if one of the preserved locos took it back to High Dyke Junction.  I think the brake van had been there a long time and was "forgotten".

"I think the brake van had been there a long time and was "forgotten"."

Nothing new. In the 1930s the GWR wrote off a large number of wagons which had not been seen since the Grouping. And there used to be regular calls for sighting of lost wagons.

But a brake van is a bit more unusual as it presumably would have arrived with a guard aboard.

Hi David.  The late Alan Garraway is driving Linda in C251 - it was his regular engine at the time.

I like the rotating disc signal - I wonder what the Railway Inspectorate thought of that? Presumably that's John Harrison ("Lord North") operating it.  He was the stationmaster at TyB for many years.

Good evening, David. That’s a delightful selection of photo’s from North Wales, at Tan y Bwlch, on the Ffestiniog Railway. In the first photo’ of Earl of Merioneth, in August, 1969, you have taken an excellent shot of the locomotive as it rests in the station.

What a great set of photo’s of the Blyth and Tyne. In C11796, at North Blyth, with 56133 again, on the 28th March, 1989, that’s a great photo’, and it looks like the blue is quite dark. But I think like it’s been said, colour perception depends on the lighting conditions as well as the camera. I would have thought, with the bright sunlight, the blue would have been lighter than that, so I’m not sure what so say.

That’s an excellent selection of photo’s of the Midland at Stenson Junction and around Trent. In C2500, at Trent, with a Class 47, on a down freight train, in October, 1975, as taken from the footbridge over the Nottingham line at Meadow Lane crossing, you have a beautifully composed shot which is most artistic with the way the footbridge’s girders frame the 47 in a most delightful way.

Finally, the photo’s of Newcastle are a splendid set. In C9523, of 47654, on a train of sleeping cars, along with 143005, on the 10th May, 1988, you have taken a superb portrait shot of the 47.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

Owing to unforeseen circumstances I haven't been able to post the rest of today's photos.  Hopefully things will return to normal tomorrow.

There isn't anything wrong, I have just been too busy and I had to go out for a lot longer than I expected.

Good evening, David. Firstly, please, as others have said, don’t feel you have to post photo’s every day. Those you do post are much appreciated.

Now, that’s a great selection of photo’s of Carlisle. C7947, is a superb portrait shot of 85014, on the 26th August, 1986.

Very best regards,

 Rob.

That 'Austerity' isn't, Dave - IIRC it is a '50550' class, the predecessor design the Austerity was derived from.

Many thanks Neil.  I've corrected the captions.

That is something I ought to know by now - I saw the real thing often enough both at Harlaxton and later at Chappel and Wakes Colne in the 1970s.
