"What about Scarborough to Holyhead in a 150/2?"

I believe that at one time there was a through working of a first generation DMU from Skegness to Pwllheli, though not shown as such in the public timetables. I used the part of the service between either Birmingham NS or Shrewsbury and Barmouth, if the story was correct. But it may have ben a myth.

A bit late for a first generation DMU, but Central Trains definitely continued the trend that Regional Raileays started and strung together some of their routes to produce interesting long distance workings.  I'm struggling to remember details from that period, but something like you suggest would have been perfectly possible prior to the loss of the Welsh routes (the Wikipedia page on Central Trains mentions Aberystwyth-Grimsby for example).

Good evening, David. That’s an excellent selection of photo’s of Butterley, in 1975, and 1976. In C2688, that’s a superb portrait shot of 16440, in April, 1976, and you can see where Hornby got the idea of a red Jinty from.

The photo’s of Church Lane crossing, on the Great Eastern are a superb set. In C2084, with a Class 47, on a down express passenger train, in June, 1975, you have taken an excellent and well composed shot, with the zoom emphasising different aspects of the train, including the droopy tops to the cabsides.

What a splendid selection of photo’s of the ECML at Corby Glen and Claypole. In the last photo’, at Claypole, with Class 55, 9006, on a down express, train 1L13, the SuX 11.30 King’s Cross to Leeds & Harrogate, in October, 1970, you have taken a delightful shot of the Deltic hauled train.

Finally, the photo’s of the WCML photo’s between Oxenholme and Tebay, are a superb set. In C1203, at Low Gill, with a Class 25, on an up train of car flats, in February, 1973, you have taken a shot which is dramatic and atmospheric with the low sun, blue sky, snow and mountains.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

Some WCML photos between Oxenholme and Tebay.  After looking at these photos no one should complain about manufacturers not getting the same shade of grey or maroon on their coaches - there really was a lot of variation.

In these two photos J1255 and J303, the two coaches that appear to be in a much lighter maroon look like the ends are also maroon as opposed the black. Wasn’t there a difference in how such coaches were painted? IIRC those with red ends were sprayed and this made for a thinner and lighter coat. Happy to be corrected though.

Locally everyone said the North Blyth flow was the last but I cannot remember the exact date it ended.

Did you ever get to the other Lausanne station before it closed?

2014-03-01_45.JPG.17699becec90262ebd3a010e31812426.JPG

I had enjoyable ride up part of the line but didn't have time to do the whole branch. I think the station has now closed and the ttrains run into the main station.

I saw parts of the line in 1978 but didn't get to the station.

Good evening, David. That’s a fantastic set of photo’s of the Blyth and Tyne. In the first photo’ of Isabella sidings, with 37199 and an NCB shunter collecting wagons, on closure of Bates Pit, on the 6th April, 1985, it’s a well composed shot of a busy scene on that sad day. It’s s hard to say which of the last two photo’s shows the colours most accurately. I am not able to say much, but yours appears to have slightly better contrast and saturation.

The photo’s of electrics around Hillmorton are superb. In J2950, of a Class 86, working a London Euston to Liverpool express train in May, 1972, your Dad has taken a most striking head on shot.

In the photo’s of Switzerland, in Lausanne, on the 4th August, 1988, that’s a splendid selection. In the last photo’ of Ae/66, 11485, on a westbound freight train, you have taken a beautifully composed shot of the quite short train.

Finally, the photo’s of Peascliffe Tunnel and Barkston, on the ECML, are a fantastic set. In J1405, at Barkston, with a Class 47, D1977, on a down service, in September, 1968, on enlarging the photo’, it can be seen that there is only the one headlamp. I’m wondering if that’s all that was available on failure of the headcode box.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

Looking on my monitor, I would say somewhere between the two might just be nearer the true colour. I think C11794 looks a bit yellow, especially the greys, but the sea looks right. J9853 the sea looks too blue, a bit like on a postcard, but the greys of the hoppers look better. But then I bet if you printed them they would look different again.... Doh...

Today we start with another batch of photos from the High Dyke branch at Skillington Junction.  The first five show Class 31s on iron workings in BR days.

The last photo was after BR had closed the branch when preserved locos used the line for interchange traffic with BR, in this case ballast empties.

Re the two photos, I notice that the angle of the sun is quite low. Note the shadow of a pole in the first one. The colour of the loco and train seem to me compatible with the warm low angle sunlight. I think when the second photo was taken the sun may have been masked by a light cloud as there is no shadow of the post even though the train has not moved. So the daylight is not so warm.

So not just the film but also the lighting conditions to consider. And i really wouldn't like to guess which is the more accurate rendering.
