Good evening, David. That’s a fantastic selection of photo’s of Quainton Road in November, 1976. In C3098, of GWR, Pannier, 7715, you have taken a delightful portrait shot of the locomotive.

The photo’s of the Weardale line, between Bishop Auckland and Eastgate, on the 23rd May, 1987, are a most interesting set of the line and the railtour. In C8492, at Etherley station, it’s a well composed shot, and shows the large size of the station buildings.

In the photo’s of the Isle of Wight at Ryde, in the second half of the 1970’s, you have a superb selection. In the last photo’, at Ryde Esplanade, with 4VEC, 041, on a Shanklin to Pier Head service, in June, 1975, you have an excellent shot of the train in the station. It can be seen that the clearance between the train and the platform was quite tight at the vehicle ends.

Finally, the random photo’s are an excellent set. In J2395, at Irchester, with a Class 47, on an up freight train in October, 1970, your Dad has taken an excellent and well composed shot of the approaching train. It can be seen that there are two different windscreen wipers, on the 47, and if you replicated that on a model you’d almost certainly be in trouble.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

In J583 would the brake vehicle just have been for the guard or was there still churn traffic in 1966.

A nice prototype to model, anyway.

Jonathan

I don't remember seeing churns around that time, so I think it was probably just for the guard, but I don't know Devon perhaps they still had churns.

Definitely just for the guard, although milk was still being collected in churns from some of the farms, at least in Cornwall, all the milk traffic from the various creameries was transported in tank wagons.

Good evening, David. That’s a splendid selection of photo’s of Arthington and Leeds City. In C24625, at Leeds, with 155342, on a Leeds to Halifax service, on the 10th August, 1999, that is a superb shot of the unit which is still going strong today.

The photo’s of West Coast electrics, with one in the Lune Gorge and the rest at Norton Bridge, are a superb set. In J5247, at Norton Bridge, with a Class 86, on a down express passenger train, in May, 1976, your Dad has taken a well composed shot of the train.

What a great mixed selection of photo’s, with the first one at Chapel en le Frith, with 37677, on a train of ICI empties, on the 24th August, 1990, being a most atmospheric photo’ of the train as it passes through some lovely countryside.

Finally, the photo’s of the London Tilbury and Southend from around Tilbury in 1976, are an excellent set. In C2623, at Tilbury Town, with Class 08’s 08417 and 08357, on a down light engine movement, in February, 1976, that’s a superb and well composed shot of the shunters coupled cab to cab.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

I may have mentioned it before, but we occasionally caught the Tilbury ferry from Gravesend as a "Sunday outing" around that period, and I remember there being makeshift market stalls in Tilbury Riverside selling jeans and transistor radios to the Russians (seamen?) who came ashore.

Ah, the Southend East parcels and papers...Great days. And the Grays 08 pilot. When shunting the down side oil terminal, it would "blip" all the signals to red...

A somewhat more homogenous 'Ford' train, mainly composed of 22t Pallet vans, though there might be some of the 'IZAL' ones amongst then. (ther stock seen on these trains included air--piped BR vans, 'Tube' wagons, and later, Freightliner flats. The Tubes had steel plates bolted to the sides, allowing them to be opened and closed by forklift tines.

David,

Thanks for all the superb pictures and for taking the time to post them, this topic is always my first port of call when I look at RMWEB ! Apologies if this has been mentioned before, but if the photograph in  JVol4051 is taken from the GN viaduct then the junction in the picture is actually Bennerley Junction which existed until relatively recently and was latterly the junction for an opencast loading plant but was originally the junction for the line to Nottingham via Watnall. Ilkeston Junction is a mile or so further south.  Again, thanks for all the great pictures and hope this information is useful.

Many thanks Dave,

I really should have noticed that I had typed the wrong place name, it was correct in Dad's notes.  The more so as I have been there often enough in later years.

We are going to France now to look at some trains at St. Omer in August 1978.  St. Omer is between Calais and Liile.

They were taken on the way home from a holiday with family and friends in the Alps at Les Gets.  Mum, Dad and I had bumped into some French friends when we were in Morzine one day, when our English friends went home we went to stay with them in their chalet in Morzine for about a week and then slowly set off for home, spending 4 or 5 nights on the way to Calais.  Fortunately we hadn't booked a return ferry crossing before we set off or we would have been almost a fortnight late for it!  Our outward journey had been Sheerness to Vlissingen then about a week travelling through the Netherlands, Belgium, eastern France and Switzerland then back into France to get to Les Gets.

St. Omer was quite busy, after a search we found a small cafe with rooms for the night.  The food was excellent, the beds were comfortable even though the bed linen didn't match - who cares as long as you get a good night's sleep.

The very ornate station building was built in the 1920s, i believe, to replace the original, which had been shelled. The route past the station was electrified in the early 1990s, in anticipation of Channel l Tunnel freight traffic
