RMweb Premium drjcontroller Posted May 11, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 11, 2017 The May blossom is well advanced at Stone Bridge, Durham as Deltic 55019 "Royal Highland Fusilier" drones south with a returning Northern Belle excursion on 24th May 2000.
RMweb Premium drjcontroller Posted May 11, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 11, 2017 Well what else are you going to do on Christmas Day than nip round to your local shed and ask if you can have a look round. To my amazement, the running foreman said "yes" so I made a beeline for 55021 "Argyll & Sutherland Highlander", which was outside in the shed yard. RMweb Premium drjcontroller Posted May 11, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 11, 2017 55008 "The Green Howards" comes out of the cutting at Heaton with 1V93 09:50 Edinburgh - Plymouth. The Deltic would normally work 1V93 as far as York, then return north on 1S27 07:22 Plymouth - Edinburgh. In the background, a DMU slows for the stop at Heaton station, which finally closed to passengers some 4 months later on 11th August. 5th April 1980.
vitalspark
Loads of pin sharp slides from the 70s & 80s but cant get the scanner to reproduce without loss of quality. New flatbed required..will address soon. Meantime a few of above and apologise re the quality. 55003 at York on afternoon Talsman. 55012 at Haymarket waiting to go down to Waverley to take an overnight train south. 55009 with 55017 behind in Haymarket late December 1981. Less than a fortnight to go before withdrawal. Exhaust hangs above the loco as a few minutes before 9 had just fired up her engines..have another slide somewhere showing the pillar of exhaust shooting out at the angle.
RMweb Premium drjcontroller Posted May 19, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 19, 2017 (edited) The secondman on 55008 "The Green Howards" looks back to make sure it is safe to depart Darlington with 1S27 07:22 Plymouth - Edinburgh service on 5th April 1980. Does anyone recognise any of the young spotters paying their respects to the might Deltic? Edited May 19, 2017 by drjcontroller

wadave
Possibly to annoy them, but I suspect that they may be steam enthusiasts waiting for one of the last steam workings on the ECML - the picture was probably taken in about 1967 - possibly Flying Scotsman? Some things don't change... Just found this topic - I suspect the photo was taken at Scrooby troughs on 1st May 1968 on the occasion of Flying Scotsman's non-stop KX-Edinburgh run and the Deltic is 9021. It was reported as running parallel with FS for a while after departure at 10am before pulling ahead and arriving at Edinburgh 2 hours before FS. Titan
Another oldie... The Deltic is almost certainly 9019. It was modified for royal train duties, which involved cutting a small hole in the nose to pass the special communications cable through. You can just see the small plated over hole just below and to the right (as you look at it) of the left headboard clip. It was cut at one end only. In the end she was never used for royal train duty. She still carries this plated over hole today as can be seen here: So unless 9021 also had the mod it ain't her... Wednesday 3rd June, 1981. I remember spotting next to the embankment North of Sandy and when a Deltic approached like that shot, the feeling as the ground vibrated and your ears hummed was superb. Of course when you saw the faint spray of a loo being flushed you dived for cover shouting "Brown Comet" * * a substantial lump of something non specific with a vapour trail Edited May 22, 2017 by chris p bacon

vitalspark
On a bitterly cold afternoon with snow on the ground Alycidon fires up in Haymarket depot. Still on front line service but less than a fortnight later along with the rest of her stablemates she was surplus to requirements. 55017 behind had come off the overnight KX - Aberdeen and it was a strange feeling to be witnessing the end of an era at Haymarket. I must have spent a couple of hours in there standing alongside a paraffin industrial heater..backside melting and toes bordering on frostbite but no complaints. Coach bogie
55022 at Freeman's Crossing box waiting for a train to depart the docks before 22 would be parked up for the night a Blyth Alcan sidings. What a fickle lot we are. This working had became commonplace. I took the shot because the only ones present were my son, me and the driver....and I was only there as I was passing on my way to Aberdeen. RMweb Premium drjcontroller Posted May 28, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 28, 2017 Having been repainted at Finsbury Park in late July, 55015 “Tulyar” waits for the off from Platform 9 at Newcastle Central with a southbound working, presumably to Kings Cross sometime in September 1978 exact date unknown). Another "where are they now" query regarding the two young lads admiring the loco.

RMweb Premium ColinK Posted June 7, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 7, 2017 If you like the sound of deltics, Nigel Fletcher and Rob Woodward produced three LP's one called 'Deltics, diesel electrics on the Easten Region in 1975' one of Westerns and another 'Diesels in the Highlands' , the latter being the best set of diesel recordings I've heard. They have released them as a three CD set. They are available from lieutenantpigeon.co.uk for £12.99. Enjoy.
