I'm just home from a week in Snowdonia, the perfect holiday destination. People at work think I'm being wilfully contrarian (something I'll admit to being guilty of at times....) when I say that if given free choice to go anywhere for a holiday I'd go to North Wales (followed by Cumbria) but I'm being completely sincere. North Wales has everything I enjoy, stunning scenery, great walking, castles, steam trains, lovely beaches, bonkers zip lines (try Velocity 2.....), cheese on toast and lovely people. And you avoid that whole nightmare of flying. It really is the most wonderful place, beautiful. The Welsh Highland Railway is glorious, and gives you the opportunity to bash Beyer-Garratt kettles in the most wonderful of settings, how can you beat that?!!

Better weather.

The first hint of autumn colours in the trees and an unfamiliar morning coolness in the air on the 1st September 2019 by the River Wharfe at Ilkley, West Yorkshire and looking into North Yorkshire as the river here forms the county boundary.

Well, we have on occasions been told that our weather is hotter than Spain. :bye:

It's the 'on occasions' bit that disappoints. Now while Wales is lovely (I live on the shores of Cardigan Bay) the weather even on the coastal fringe, which has more sunshine and warmer temperatures than inland, isn't reliably hot and sunny throughout the summer. Living here is fine, I can hide inside and build model railways when the weather is inclement, but it's not so good for the holidaymaker who has to take pot luck. However we do get some cracking sunsets.

Off to enjoy some of Britains best scenery in a few weeks time, a nice few days break in Eskdale (Lake District), to enjoy such things as the Hardknott, and Wrynose Passes, if you don't know the area treat yourself to a look at Google Images, I don't think I can better any of those pics.:sungum:

A Roman soldier must have been gutted to be posted to the fort up there.

From what I understand, the legionaries on Hadrians Wall were Germanic and Danubian tribesmen who probably didn’t speak Latin either. Having experienced Baltic winters, they probably felt quite at home there.
